Keep water off the appliance itself, and follow the manual for your exact model—especially if it has a pump filter. If the musty smell remains after accessible parts are clean and dry, check the model’s documentation or contact Midea rather than attempting an undocumented internal repair.
Clean the accessible parts safely
- Switch off and unplug the unit. Clean only user-accessible areas described in the owner’s manual. Midea’s dehumidifier manual says to disconnect power before cleaning.
- Wash the bucket. Remove it and wash it with clean water and a little mild detergent. Swish the solution around, empty the bucket, and rinse it. The cited manual recommends doing this every few weeks and says not to put the bucket in a dishwasher.
- Wash and dry the removable air filter. Rinse it with clean water, let it dry, then reinstall it. Do not operate the dehumidifier without its filter.
- Clear dust from the intake and outlet grilles. Use a vacuum attachment or brush. Do not spray or splash water onto the unit, and do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners on the case.
- Reassemble the parts. Follow the model’s manual before using the unit again.
These steps follow the cleaning instructions in Midea’s MAD dehumidifier manual; check your own manual because instructions and features can differ by model.

Check whether your model has a pump filter
Not every Midea dehumidifier has a pump filter. If yours does, use the procedure in its own manual rather than assuming another model’s instructions apply. For the Midea Cube BT MAD50PE1QWT-S guide, Midea says the pump filter can be rinsed or cleaned with a soft brush or sponge. Do not remove or clean an internal part unless the manual identifies it as user-serviceable.

Why the smell might persist
Midea says that cleaning the bucket helps prevent the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria. A dirty or stagnant bucket is therefore one possible maintenance-related contributor to a musty odor, but it is not a diagnosis of your particular unit. The available instructions do not establish that the filter or internal components are contaminated, identify one universal cause, or specify a chemical treatment for persistent odor.

Before trying a different cleaning method, find the model number and confirm what its manual allows for the bucket, filter, case, and grilles. Some Midea products have washable filters or filter indicators—for example, the Canadian MADA35R5AWT product page describes both. That feature information applies to the named model, not necessarily to yours.
If cleaning does not remove the odor
Once accessible parts are clean and dry, use the model number to find the correct manual or contact Midea support. Its US support listings provide routes to manuals, parts, repair requests, and customer support for specific models, including the MAD50P1AWS1 and MAD35C1AWS1. These pages are model-specific; choose the listing that matches your unit. Avoid opening the appliance or applying an undocumented chemical treatment.

Before putting the unit away for a long time
The Cube BT guide gives a separate storage procedure for that model: let the system dry naturally for one full day, clean the unit, bucket, and filter, then store it upright in a dry, well-ventilated area. This is a long-term storage instruction for the cited Cube guide, not a required waiting period after every routine cleaning.
