An NFC tag can give a Samsung Galaxy routine a deliberate tap point: touch your phone to a tag at your desk or bedside, and—if your phone offers NFC tags as a routine condition—use that tap to start a configured set of actions. Two practical ideas are a work-arrival setup and a bedtime shortcut. Samsung supports NFC reading and Galaxy routines generally, but its official guidance does not guarantee NFC routine triggers on every model or software version.
What NFC tags add to Galaxy routines
NFC is a short-range way for a phone to read a nearby tag. Samsung says to hold the back of the Galaxy close to the tag or reader for a few moments; NFC can be managed from Quick Settings. See Samsung’s NFC guidance.

Modes and Routines lets you pair conditions under “If” with actions under “Then.” An NFC sticker, placed where a routine makes sense, can serve as a purposeful touch point rather than a physical button—provided the phone’s routine conditions include NFC tags. Samsung’s official Modes and Routines guidance says availability varies by device and software version. The specific NFC-tag condition appears in Samsung Members community setup guidance, not as a universal promise in the official support guide.
1. Use a tag to start a work or desk routine
Put a tag where you naturally arrive at your work setup, such as on a desk or near a work bag. Samsung gives arriving at work as an example of a routine that mutes notification sounds and turns on Wi-Fi. If your Galaxy offers an NFC tag condition, you could use a tap at that spot to start a routine with those actions.

- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
To configure it, open Settings > Modes and Routines, create a routine, choose the available trigger under If, add the desired phone settings under Then, and save. If “NFC tag” is offered, follow the phone’s prompts to associate the tag. Labels and available actions can differ by software version.
2. Put a bedtime shortcut by your bed
A bedside tag can be a convenient touch point for a sleep-oriented routine. Samsung’s examples include lowering screen brightness before sleep. If NFC tags appear among your Galaxy’s routine conditions, configure one as the trigger and select the phone actions you want from those available on your device.

This is a shortcut for phone settings, not a guarantee that every sleep-related feature or connected device can be controlled by the tag. SmartThings routines separately pair available conditions with actions, and SmartThings scenes are groupings of device states that can be run manually; compatible connected devices are optional, not necessary for a routine that changes phone settings. See SmartThings’ routines guidance.
Check compatibility before placing or buying tags
- Open Settings > Modes and Routines and check the conditions available on your Galaxy. Samsung says feature availability varies by device and software version, and menu organization may differ.
- If NFC tag is listed, create a test routine using an action you can easily notice, then follow the on-screen instructions for the tag.
- For a read, hold the phone’s back close to the tag for a few moments. If the scan does not register, reposition the phone and tag and check that NFC is enabled in Quick Settings.
- If the trigger is not listed, the cited community workflow does not establish that your model can use NFC tags to start routines. Do not assume a different tag will add a missing phone condition.
A pack of writable NFC tags is optional gear for this idea, not a guaranteed compatibility fix. The cited Samsung materials do not establish a specific compatible chip family, memory size, guaranteed range, or behavior while the phone is locked or in a particular app state. Verify that your phone exposes the trigger before choosing tags.

How NFC tags differ from Galaxy SmartTag buttons
A sticker and a SmartTag offer different interactions. Samsung documents SmartTag button actions for pressed and held states, including controlling devices, notifying someone, or running scenes. That is button-based SmartThings automation, not an NFC sticker triggering a Galaxy routine. Samsung’s instructions are at Use the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag+.
| Option | Interaction | What it can start | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| NFC tag | Tap the phone against a nearby tag | A Galaxy routine, if NFC tag is available as a condition on that device | Model and software availability; the tag’s specifications are not established by the cited guidance |
| Galaxy SmartTag button | Press or hold the button | Documented SmartTag actions, such as controlling devices, notifying someone, or running scenes | SmartTag and compatible SmartThings setup |
Choose an NFC tag for a tap-at-a-place shortcut only after confirming the routine condition is available. Choose a SmartTag when the physical button interaction is what you want; it is a separate route, not a substitute NFC trigger.
