Samsung Galaxy M23 5G Review: Is It Still Worth Buying in 2026?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Samsung Galaxy M23 5G can still handle everyday apps, and its 120Hz Full HD+ screen, microSD slot and headphone jack remain useful. But it is a 2022 phone, so in 2026 its battery condition, exact regional model, carrier compatibility and security-patch date matter more than its original spec sheet. Buy one only at a substantial discount—and verify the unit before paying.

At a glance: who should consider the Galaxy M23?

  • Consider it if you find a low-priced, returnable unit with a healthy battery, current-enough software for your needs and confirmed compatibility with your carrier.
  • Skip it if you need dependable long-term updates, strong cameras, an AMOLED screen or a phone that will work on a US network without model-specific checks.
  • Best fit: basic browsing, messaging, streaming, navigation and casual gaming, especially for someone who values expandable storage or wired headphones.

The Galaxy M23 5G was a budget-to-midrange phone introduced in 2022. This is a buying assessment for 2026, not a launch-price verdict: the hardware can still be serviceable, but age and regional differences make a cheap, verified example very different from an expensive import.

Specifications and regional differences

Feature What is documented Important qualification
Display 6.6-inch Full HD+ LCD, 120Hz; independent testing reports 2408 × 1080 resolution Samsung’s specification is regional; panel measurements and configurations can vary.
Processor and memory Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G; 4GB or 6GB RAM RAM depends on market.
Storage 128GB; microSD support up to 1TB Availability and card support depend on the variant; card sold separately.
Rear cameras 50MP main, 8MP ultrawide and auxiliary 2MP camera Regional materials differ on whether the third camera is described as depth or macro.
Front camera 8MP Samsung regional specification.
Battery and charging 5,000mAh typical capacity; 4,860mAh rated minimum; up to 25W charging Charger sold separately; used-unit battery health is unknown unless tested.
Connectivity 4G and 5G; independent testing reports Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 Radio bands and features vary by model and country.
Software at launch Android 12 with One UI 4.1 Historical launch configuration, not the current state of every unit.
Latest verified software record Android 14 with February 5, 2026 security patch Samsung records checked for SM-M236B and SM-E236B; update timing varies by model, country and carrier.

Samsung’s regional product specifications list the Snapdragon 750G, market-dependent 4GB or 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, microSD expansion up to 1TB and 120Hz Full HD+ display. The M23 is not one uniform global configuration: models include SM-M236B, SM-E236B and SM-M236Q, among others. Check the model in Settings → About phone or on the box; do not assume a listing for an M23, Galaxy F23 or Galaxy A23 5G is interchangeable.

Design, display and everyday use

Practical features, dated materials

The M23 has a conventional rounded Samsung design, plastic construction and a side-mounted fingerprint reader integrated with the power button. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack and, on relevant variants, dual-SIM support alongside a separate microSD slot. Samsung lists colors including Light Blue, Deep Green and Orange Copper, but availability depends on country. Do not assume an IP water-resistance rating: the cited product specification does not establish one.

An imported device may have different firmware, NFC availability, warranty coverage, SIM behavior or charger packaging from a local model. Confirm these details with the seller rather than inferring them from photographs or the M23 name.

120Hz LCD rather than AMOLED

The 6.6-inch panel combines Full HD+ resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. Scrolling and supported animations can look smoother than on a standard 60Hz screen, and Notebookcheck found the touchscreen responsive and accurate. Its testing identified an IPS LCD, not AMOLED, and reported no PWM flicker concern in its measurements.

The trade-off is visible in dark scenes and video: LCD blacks and contrast cannot match AMOLED. A newer Galaxy A phone with a 90Hz or 120Hz Super AMOLED panel may look more vivid even if the refresh-rate number is similar. Running at 120Hz can also use more battery than 60Hz, and the M23 is not established as exceptionally bright by current standards.

Performance: still fine for basics, not a gaming upgrade

The Snapdragon 750G remains capable for web browsing, messaging, social apps, streaming, navigation, light photo editing and casual games. Notebookcheck described normal use as smooth and measured 643 points in Geekbench 5.5 single-core testing; that is a historical result from its 2022-era review, not a current comparative benchmark. The review also credited UFS storage with helping app loading.

Samsung Galaxy S23+ Plus 5G, US Version, 256GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • It offers a 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 48-120 Hz refresh rate plus up to ~ 1750 nits peak brightness and “Vision Booster,” meaning the screen stays bright and viewable even in strong sunlight — great if you use your phone outdoors a lot.

There are 4GB and 6GB RAM configurations. In 2026, 4GB is more likely to force background apps to reload, while 6GB offers more breathing room for multitasking. Neither version is a sensible choice for sustained high-end gaming or heavy video editing. Notebookcheck observed heat under sustained load; heat can lead to reduced performance, and an aged battery may make a used phone feel worse than its original tests suggested.

Cameras: usable main sensor, weak ultrawide

Main and ultrawide cameras

The 50MP main camera generally produces acceptable daylight photographs. Its default images are pixel-binned to a lower resolution, and the 50MP label does not guarantee fine detail: Notebookcheck found detail could look weak when enlarged. The review found HDR could be good and low-light brightening reasonable, but the M23 is not a dedicated night-photography phone.

The 8MP ultrawide is useful when you need to fit more into a frame, but it has substantially less detail than the main camera and shows softness and edge distortion. Treat the auxiliary 2MP camera as a minor supporting sensor, not as a telephoto or a reason to expect a versatile camera system.

Selfies and video

The front camera is 8MP. Notebookcheck found the main camera can record 4K video at 30fps and praised autofocus and exposure compensation. The cited testing does not establish stabilization quality, selfie-video quality or low-light video performance, so do not buy on the assumption that those are strengths.

SAMSUNG Galaxy S23 5G, US Version, 128GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.

Battery life and charging depend on the individual unit

Samsung specifies a 5,000mAh typical battery capacity (4,860mAh rated minimum) and up to 25W charging. The charger is sold separately according to Samsung, so check what the seller actually includes. Notebookcheck recorded 16 hours 44 minutes in its Wi-Fi web-browsing test and judged endurance good, though below the Galaxy M22 tested with the same methodology. That laboratory result describes its test unit, not a guarantee for a phone that has been used for roughly four years.

For a used M23, battery condition is more important than the original capacity figure. Ask whether the battery has been replaced and test drain, charging and heat during a return window. A worn USB-C port, poor cable or unsuitable charger can also slow charging; rapid drain or heat under load can reflect battery age rather than the processor alone.

Android and security updates: check the exact variant

Samsung’s update records checked on August 18, 2026 show Android 14 and a February 5, 2026 security patch for the SM-M236B and SM-E236B variants; the records list release dates in March 2026. Samsung cautions that updates vary by model, country and carrier. These entries do not establish the update status or future support of every Galaxy M23.

The phone launched with Android 12 and One UI 4.1. Notebookcheck’s 2022 review criticized the limited update commitment it understood at the time; that historical assessment should not be mistaken for proof that no later updates arrived. Conversely, a unit running Android 14 is not automatically secure if its patch date is old. Ask for a screenshot of Settings → Software update, inspect the security patch date, and confirm the exact model’s Samsung update record. Check that Google Play system updates install as well.

  • No Warranty. Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Sprint.

5G and US carrier compatibility: never assume

5G support on the spec sheet does not mean every M23 works on every 5G network. Bands, VoLTE certification, Wi-Fi calling and firmware depend on the exact regional model and carrier. Samsung notes that 5G availability and speed vary by country, provider and environment. Notebookcheck reported Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, a headphone jack and acceptable cellular reception in its tested configuration, while noting reception could be weaker than higher-end phones in some conditions.

For a US purchase, check the model number against the intended carrier’s current compatibility checker before paying. Imported listings may lack US LTE or 5G bands, fail carrier VoLTE requirements, be uncertified, remain carrier-locked or receive different firmware updates. “Unlocked” may only mean SIM-unlocked; it does not guarantee carrier compatibility, and it says nothing about bootloader status. Do not assume NFC, eSIM, FM radio, a particular Bluetooth codec or dual-SIM behavior without verifying the variant.

What price makes sense in 2026?

There is no universal fair price for a four-year-old phone: condition, local stock, return rights, warranty, shipping and carrier compatibility all change the value. Use this decision ladder instead of treating an asking price as a market average:

  • Very good deal: clearly below a current entry-level 5G Samsung with a warranty, with model and battery verified.
  • Potentially acceptable: cheap enough to compensate for battery wear, age and less predictable support, with a return option.
  • Poor deal: close to the price of a new current Galaxy A-series phone.
  • Reject: an expensive import whose bands, warranty, taxes, return costs or battery condition are unclear.

An eBay search snapshot dated August 18, 2026 showed asking prices around $172–$216 for some new or open-box imported M23 listings, roughly $105 for one used/open-box 64GB listing, and much higher prices for some UK listings. Those are volatile asking prices, not completed-sale values or a reliable market average; listings may ship from China, South Korea or the UK. Check the current listings carefully for shipping, return terms and model number.

For context, Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP document lists the unlocked 128GB Galaxy A17 5G at $199.99. It lists the A26 5G at $299.99 and A36 5G at $399.99, but marks both EOL in that document, so check actual stock before treating either as available. These are listed MSRPs, not guaranteed current selling prices. See Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP list. A new local-market phone is generally the safer comparison when its price is close: it avoids some import and battery-age risk.

Used-phone buying checklist

  1. Confirm identity: ask for the model number from Settings → About phone and compare it with the box and listing. Make sure it is an M23, not an F23, M22 or A23 5G.
  2. Check network fit: match the exact model against your carrier’s bands and compatibility checker; ask specifically about VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, SIM lock and regional firmware.
  3. Inspect software: ask for Settings → Software update and the security-patch date. Compare the model with Samsung’s update record; do not extrapolate from another country’s variant.
  4. Test the battery and charging: check for swelling, unusual heat, rapid drain and loose USB-C connection. Ask whether the battery was replaced and whether that work is documented.
  5. Check account and IMEI status: confirm the seller removes Google and Samsung accounts, the phone is not activation-locked, and the IMEI is not blocked.
  6. Inspect hardware: test the touchscreen, fingerprint reader, cameras, headphone jack, speakers, SIM and microSD trays, and look for screen damage, lens scratches, water damage or a non-original replacement display.
  7. Protect the purchase: get a clear return policy and warranty terms in writing. For imports, factor in shipping, taxes, charger differences and the cost of returning an incompatible device.

Final verdict by buyer

For an existing M23 owner

Keep it if its battery is healthy, your apps run acceptably and your variant’s patch status meets your needs. Consider replacing it if you depend on continued security support, need reliable carrier features or are already seeing battery problems.

For a used-phone buyer outside the US

The M23 can make sense as an inexpensive everyday phone if the local variant, battery, return terms and update record check out. Its strongest practical case is the combination of smooth 120Hz scrolling, expandable storage and a headphone jack at a genuinely low price.

For a US buyer or someone choosing a new phone

A newer US-market Galaxy A-series phone is usually the safer choice when the price gap is small: it offers a clearer local compatibility and warranty path and avoids buying a battery with years of use. Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed program describes unlocked phones compatible with major US carrier types, a one-year limited warranty, genuine Samsung parts, a 147-point inspection and a certified new battery, but its current lineup focuses on newer S-series and foldable devices rather than the M23. See Samsung Certified Re-Newed for current offerings.
