Exact labels and availability can vary by model and software version.
Turn Dark mode on or off
From Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Select Dark to turn Dark mode on, or Light to turn it off.
Samsung’s guidance says devices running Android 10 and later can access Dark mode under Display. On some models, the setting may be called Night mode; menu wording can differ.

From Quick Settings
Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings, then tap the Dark mode tile. Tap it again to switch back. If you do not see the tile, use Settings or edit the Quick Settings tiles if that option is available on your device.
Schedule Dark mode
- Open Settings > Display, or touch and hold the Dark mode tile in Quick Settings to open its settings.
- Enable Turn on as scheduled.
- Choose Sunset to sunrise or set a custom schedule with start and end times.
Samsung’s Canada guidance says location must be enabled for sunset-to-sunrise scheduling on the devices covered by that page. Because controls vary, check your device’s schedule settings if the option does not work as expected. You can still change Dark mode manually while a schedule is enabled.

Why some apps stay light
Dark mode changes Galaxy interface elements, settings, and preloaded Samsung apps. Third-party apps may remain light if they do not support the device’s theme or manage their appearance separately. Samsung also warns that a downloaded theme or high-contrast font can interfere with Dark mode.
- Check whether the app has its own appearance or theme setting.
- Temporarily switch to a standard theme and turn off any high-contrast font to see whether either affects the result.
- Update the app and your device software. Samsung cautions that some apps may flicker in Dark or Night mode.
Samsung does not promise that every app will follow the system setting, so a light screen in one app does not necessarily mean Dark mode is disabled.

Dark mode versus Eye comfort shield

| Eye comfort shield | Screen color, limiting blue light; Adaptive adjusts color over time, while Custom allows a schedule and color-temperature choice. | When you want to adjust the screen’s color rather than change the interface theme. |
These are separate display features, not alternate names for the same setting. Samsung’s U.S. guidance identifies One UI 3.1 and later as the baseline for Eye comfort shield, but availability depends on the model. Neither setting should be treated as a medical treatment or as universally superior.

If you cannot find the setting or it behaves unexpectedly
- Open Settings > Display or search for “Dark mode” in the Settings app.
- Try the Quick Settings tile; on some models it may be called Night mode.
- If only one app looks different, check that app’s own theme options and whether it supports Dark mode.
- Check for a downloaded theme or high-contrast font if the interface does not change as expected.
- Install available device and app updates if you see flicker or other unexpected behavior.
Samsung notes that screens and options vary by device and software version. The paths above are general guidance, not a guarantee that every Galaxy model uses identical controls.
