If your Samsung Galaxy charges when connected to a computer but won’t transfer files, unlock the phone, tap its USB notification, and choose Transferring files / Android Auto (or the closest file-transfer option shown). Tap Allow if prompted. On One UI 8.0, Samsung says the default USB mode is Charging phone only, so charging alone may be expected until you change the mode. If files still do not appear, check the cable, USB port, and computer in that order.
Make the Galaxy available for file transfer
- Connect the Galaxy to the computer with a USB cable, then unlock the phone.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the USB notification, often worded as charging this device via USB.
- Select Transferring files / Android Auto. Depending on the model and software, the option may instead be labeled Transferring files or MTP. Samsung says One UI 8.0 devices default to Charging phone only, so you may need to change the mode for file transfer. Samsung’s USB connection mode instructions explain the setting.
- If Allow access to phone data appears, tap Allow. Without permission, the computer cannot display the phone’s folders. Samsung’s guidance for a Galaxy folder that does not appear on a PC also notes that the phone must be unlocked.
On Windows, open File Explorer and look for the Galaxy under connected devices. On a Chromebook, open the Files app after selecting File Transfer. Menu wording can vary by Galaxy model and software version.

If the phone is still not showing files on the computer
Check the cable and USB port
Charging does not confirm that a cable supports data. Try a cable explicitly rated for data transfer, and connect it directly to another USB port on the computer. If you use an adapter, verify that it supports the connection you need. Samsung and Google both note that some USB cables only charge. Samsung’s cable and connection troubleshooting and Google’s Android USB transfer instructions cover these checks.

Isolate the phone from the computer
- Connect the Galaxy to a different computer. If file transfer works there, investigate the original computer’s port or device recognition.
- Connect another device to the original computer’s USB port. If that also fails, try another port and restart the computer.
- Restart the Galaxy, reconnect it while unlocked, and select file transfer again.
For Windows, Google recommends ejecting the phone before unplugging it after a transfer. The Files app is used for the corresponding Chromebook workflow.

Reinstall the Samsung device driver if MTP is missing
Use this step if the computer does not detect the Galaxy or an MTP/file-transfer prompt does not appear after checking the mode, permission, cable, and port. Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting directs users to disconnect the phone, restart it, open Smart Switch on the computer, select More or its additional functions, choose Reinstall device driver, confirm, and reconnect the phone. Samsung also recommends installing the latest USB driver for the device when the phone’s data-access prompt does not appear. If you need to move files without resolving the cable connection, Samsung documents cloud storage and wireless options such as Samsung Flow and Quick Share in supported situations. Google also documents Quick Share for Windows. Smart Switch is intended for device migration as well as its computer-side troubleshooting tools; it is not the same as browsing the Galaxy’s general folders. Availability depends on the devices and software involved. Samsung notes that microSD cards and external storage are not supported on every phone or tablet. For Mac, Samsung provides Smart Switch-specific support steps, but the guidance cited here does not establish one Finder workflow that applies to every Galaxy and macOS combination. Choose a transfer method supported by your software rather than assuming Finder will show the phone’s files.
