A rigid metal tape and a careful setup make the result more repeatable; a home reading is not a substitute for a standardized stadiometer measurement.
What you need
- A flat, uncarpeted floor beside a straight wall.
- A rigid metal or other non-stretchable measuring tape.
- A flat-edged book or ruler to make the head mark, plus a pencil.
- Another person to help place the book level and mark the wall. Measuring alone makes it harder to keep the headpiece level.
How to measure your height with a tape
- Prepare the space. Stand with your back near a straight wall on a hard, level floor—not on carpet. Remove your shoes and anything on your head that would interfere with locating the crown.
- Set your posture. Stand upright with heels at the wall, feet flat, legs straight, and arms relaxed. Distribute your weight evenly. Look straight ahead; stand tall without lifting your chin or tipping your head back.
- Make the mark. Ask a helper to place a flat-edged book or ruler on the crown of your head. Keep it level with the floor and at a right angle to the wall. Mark where its lower edge meets the wall.
- Measure floor to mark. Step away from the wall. Place the tape’s zero at floor level and hold it vertically up to the mark. Keep the tape straight, read the measurement at the mark, and record both the number and the unit.
- Repeat if needed. If the mark, tape position, or your posture was uncertain, repeat the setup and compare the readings. Report only the precision the tape and setup support.
The World Health Organization-hosted Training of Trainer Manual describes the same basic sequence: “Move away from the wall and measure the space from the floor to the marked place with a tape measure.” It recommends using a high-quality tape.

How to improve the measurement
- Keep the head level. At home, a practical guide is to look forward and avoid tipping the head up or down. The book or ruler must be level; an angled headpiece can shift the mark.
- Use a vertical, floor-level scale. If you secure a non-stretchable tape to the wall instead of using a separate mark, check that it is truly vertical and begins at floor level.
- Account for hair and comfort. For a child, undo hairstyles that interfere with the crown measurement. CDC home guidance also advises keeping the head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels against the flat surface where possible. Adapt positioning to the person’s comfort and ability; do not force anyone to stand if it is unsafe or uncomfortable.
- Do not overstate precision. A home tape-and-wall reading depends on the surface, posture, mark, and tape placement. The cited sources do not establish a universal error margin against a stadiometer, so a particular accuracy percentage or equivalence to a clinical measurement cannot be claimed.
For formal measurements, the CDC’s NHANES III Home Examiner’s Manual specifies an erect posture, even weight distribution, a head in the Frankfort horizontal plane, and a headpiece snug against the crown. It also instructs the examiner to ask the person to inhale deeply and stand fully erect without moving the heels. These details help explain why a trained measurement uses more controlled positioning than a casual home reading.

Tape measure or stadiometer?
| Method | Setup | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Tape and wall mark | Use a helper, a flat-edged book or ruler, a wall, and a tape to measure from floor to mark. | Uses common household items and is inexpensive; posture and marking affect repeatability. |
| Non-stretchable tape fixed to a wall | Secure a vertical tape with its starting point at floor level, then read the height at the crown mark. | Keeps a scale in place, but it must be installed vertically and at the correct floor level. |
| Stadiometer | A purpose-built vertical scale and sliding headpiece, used with a standardized positioning procedure. | The appropriate option for standardized measurement. The cited sources do not quantify a universal difference between its reading and a home tape measurement. |
Measuring a child at home
CDC home guidance recommends measuring the distance from the floor to a wall mark with a metal tape measure. Follow the same floor-to-mark steps, remove shoes, and make sure hairstyles do not prevent the measuring edge from resting at the crown. Keep the child positioned comfortably; the CDC advises keeping the head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels against the flat surface where possible. For formal child measurements, the UK National Child Measurement Programme’s 2024 operational guidance specifies shoes off, feet flat with heels together, relaxed arms, and a horizontal Frankfort plane.
