Instead of sealing the ear canal, each earbud rests around the outer ear like an ear cuff, leaving users able to hear their surroundings. South Korea is scheduled to receive the black model on October 27, 2026, for 299,000 won; Samsung has not announced launch dates or prices for other markets.
Samsung’s announcement positions Galaxy Buds On for activities such as outdoor running, where awareness of traffic, people and other ambient sounds matters more than the isolation of an in-ear design.

What is the Galaxy Buds On clip-on design?
The ear-cuff-like housing sits on the outside of the ear while the speaker aims sound toward the ear opening. Because the canal remains open, this is an open-ear, air-conduction-style product rather than a sealed in-ear earbud. Samsung does not describe it as a bone-conduction device.

How Samsung says the buds stay in place
Fit data and simulations
Samsung says it analyzed data from varied ear shapes and used simulations to determine where the speaker and battery should sit. The company says the resulting layout widens the contact area so pressure is distributed rather than concentrated at one point.
Elastic band for movement
The connecting band’s elasticity was tuned to hold the earbuds during larger movements. These are Samsung’s design claims, not results from independent fit or exercise testing, so comfort and retention may differ substantially between ears.

Audio, controls and everyday features
- Speakers: TwinBoost speakers are intended to strengthen low frequencies.
- Volume and leakage: automatic volume adjustment responds to surroundings, and Audio Leakage Reduction is designed to limit outward sound.
- Controls: light touches on the back of the earbuds handle music and calls.
- Head gestures: nodding or shaking can answer or end calls, dismiss alarms, or read message notifications.
Open-ear playback is not private by default. Samsung warns that sound can still escape depending on playback volume, ear shape and surrounding noise, with the effect varying by fit and use. In a quiet office or train, listeners should assume some leakage is possible even with Audio Leakage Reduction enabled.

Samsung also lists Gemini Live access, Quick Voice Memo and other Galaxy AI functions. Quick Voice Memo requires a Galaxy AI-supported device, Samsung Voice Recorder and Bixby, with the long-press action configured in settings.

Galaxy connectivity and controls
Opening the charging case is designed to connect the earbuds easily to a Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung says some sound and equalizer controls are available through the device’s settings and Quick Panel without installing the Galaxy Wearable app. Actual options depend on the connected Galaxy device and supported software.

Samsung says global markets will follow sequentially, but has supplied no schedule. Android Central and TechRadar likewise reported South Korea as the only confirmed market at announcement (Android Central; TechRadar). Do not treat currency conversions as official US, UK or Australian pricing.

Where Galaxy Buds On fit among open-ear earbuds
The closest named alternatives are Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, Huawei FreeClip and Motorola Moto Buds Loop. They are form-factor alternatives, not products that can be ranked from Samsung’s announcement alone. A meaningful comparison should examine:

Market context helps explain Samsung’s timing: Android Central, citing Omdia’s 2026 figures, reports that open-ear earbud sales rose 12% year over year to the second quarter, clip-on designs represented 61% of open-ear sales, and the overall wireless-earbud market fell 2%. Omdia’s underlying report was not independently reviewed for that coverage.

Samsung MX Division CX Office head Jeong-hyun Kim described Galaxy Buds On in Samsung’s English rendering as “a form factor designed for consumers’ diverse everyday usage situations” that keeps listeners “naturally connected to their surroundings.” The open design delivers that awareness by accepting the usual trade-off: less isolation and possible sound leakage than sealed in-ear buds.
