To take a screenshot on a Samsung Galaxy A42 5G, press the Side key and Volume Down together, then release. Screenshots are saved to Gallery. You can also enable palm-swipe capture, and use Scroll capture for a long page when that control appears after a screenshot.
Take a screenshot with the buttons
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press the Side key and the lower part of the Volume key (Volume Down) at the same time, then release. Samsung’s Galaxy instructions describe pressing and releasing the power/side and Volume Down keys simultaneously; the A42-specific Android 10 guide from O2 also identifies the Side and lower Volume keys. - Look for the capture animation or toolbar to confirm the screenshot was taken.
If a brief press does not capture on your software build, try holding both keys until the screen flashes. Samsung documents both behaviors across Galaxy devices; holding too long on some configurations may open the power menu.

Use palm swipe instead
The A42 manual documents capturing a screenshot by swiping the edge of your hand across the display from one side to the other while keeping your hand in contact with the screen. First enable the gesture at Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures > Palm swipe to capture. Palm swipe is not available on every model or software configuration.

Capture a long page with Scroll capture
- Take a normal screenshot of a page that can scroll.
- If the screenshot toolbar offers Scroll capture (usually shown with downward arrows), tap it to extend the capture downward. Tap again as needed, then stop when you have the section you want.
This option depends on the screen and software. Google’s general scrolling-screenshot instructions apply to Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling; a protected or unsupported screen may not offer the control. Google Android Help · Samsung screenshot support

Find, edit and share screenshots
Open Gallery > Albums > Screenshots to find captures. Samsung also documents using My Files > Images to view and share them. From the screenshot toolbar, use the Draw control to annotate or crop before saving.
Adjust screenshot settings
On the A42, look under Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder. Depending on software version, the available options may include showing the toolbar after capture, hiding status and navigation bars, keeping the original when editing in Gallery, selecting JPG or PNG, choosing a save location, and automatically deleting screenshots shared through the toolbar. The exact options and labels can differ across software versions.

When a screenshot will not work
- The power menu opens: Try pressing and releasing Side and Volume Down together rather than holding them. If that does not work, try holding both until the display flashes.
- Palm swipe does nothing: Confirm the toggle is on at Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures > Palm swipe to capture, and keep the edge of your hand in contact with the display as you swipe.
- Neither method captures a particular screen: Some apps and screens block screenshots for privacy or security. That restriction does not necessarily indicate a phone fault.
- Your menus do not match: Samsung’s A42 support page lists manuals for Android 10, 11 and 12 variants. Carrier and software differences can change settings and feature availability, so use the labels on your phone where they differ from these steps. Samsung A42 support page
