Choose a soundbar by matching its speaker layout and placement needs to your room, then confirm that your TV and playback devices support the connections and audio formats you want. Dolby Atmos is worth considering if you have compatible content and equipment—and a room that suits the soundbar’s design—but it is not a requirement for better TV audio.
How to choose a soundbar for your room
Start with the room, not the biggest channel number on the box. Consider where people sit, how many listeners you need to cover, whether the room is open or enclosed, and how much space you have around the TV. As Dolby puts it, “There is no one-size-fits-all solution when creating a home theater.” Dolby’s home theater setup guide likewise treats room and speaker arrangement as part of the decision.

- For a simple setup: An all-in-one bar takes less space and involves fewer separate speakers. Check whether its bass and surround effect suit your expectations.
- For stronger low-frequency sound: A bar with a separate subwoofer adds a dedicated bass speaker, but you will need a practical spot for it and may need to experiment with placement.
- For more distinct speaker positions: A system with satellite surrounds or height drivers can add physical speaker locations, but needs space and clear sound paths.
- For a dedicated theater room: An AV receiver with separate speakers offers individual components to arrange and tailor, at the cost of more equipment and setup work.
Compare footprint, dialog and bass needs, physical versus virtual surround, ceiling and wall constraints, speaker locations, device compatibility, and installation complexity. Channel count alone does not guarantee sound quality.
What soundbar channel numbers mean
Channel notation describes speaker configuration. In a 5.1.2 system, the first number represents ear-level speakers, the second represents subwoofers, and the third represents height speakers. It describes the layout; it does not by itself tell you how convincing the sound will be in your room.

A separate subwoofer handles low-frequency bass. Bass is not directional in the way higher-frequency sounds are, but room acoustics and the subwoofer’s position still affect what you hear. A larger system can also demand more space and careful placement, so weigh the configuration against your seating and room rather than buying by the numbers alone.
Do you need Dolby Atmos?
No. Consider Atmos if you want compatible content played through a compatible soundbar and devices, and if the room suits the bar’s approach to height sound. Without support throughout the playback chain, Atmos content may not play in Atmos; without suitable placement, an upward-firing design may not produce its intended effect.

Atmos playback depends on every relevant part of the path: the content or app, source device, TV and soundbar, as well as the connection between them. Dolby’s support guides explain device and setup considerations. Supported streaming paths and hardware such as Blu-ray players can provide Atmos content, but the specific service catalog and device support vary. Some source devices may also need to output audio as bitstream.

Virtualized Atmos designs have fewer special room constraints than upward-firing designs, according to Dolby’s Atmos speaker setup guide. If you do not have compatible content and devices, or your room cannot accommodate the required speaker placement, a non-Atmos soundbar may be the more practical choice.

Check TV and soundbar connections before buying
HDMI ARC or eARC can carry audio from a TV to a soundbar. Another option is HDMI passthrough, where a source device connects through supported equipment. Which arrangement works depends on the exact ports and format capabilities of your TV, soundbar, and source device; check their labels and product instructions rather than assuming all HDMI ports behave alike.
- List your sources. Note the TV, streaming device, game console, disc player, and any other equipment you plan to use.
- Check the TV and soundbar ports. Confirm whether the relevant HDMI ports support ARC or eARC, and consult the product documentation for format compatibility.
- Choose the signal route. Connect the TV to the soundbar over ARC/eARC, or use passthrough if the devices support the formats and arrangement you need.
- Verify source output settings. For Atmos, confirm the source device can output the format correctly; some setups require bitstream output.
- Use a suitable HDMI cable. Dolby recommends an appropriate high-speed HDMI cable and advises checking compatibility for the specific products.
A high-speed cable is not automatically required for every connection: first check the formats and connection arrangement your devices support.

Upward-firing Atmos soundbars
Upward-firing drivers need a clear path to the ceiling. Dolby recommends placing this kind of bar at or slightly above seated ear level, with no cabinet or soffit blocking the drivers. For this specific setup guidance, Dolby describes an ideal ceiling height of 7.5 to 12 feet (2.3 to 3.66 meters) and prefers a flat, reflective ceiling. These are recommendations for upward-firing designs, not universal requirements for every soundbar.

Dolby describes virtualized Atmos bars as more flexible about room conditions. Place the bar below the TV around ear level and keep the path between the bar and listeners clear.

Subwoofer placement
Begin by placing the subwoofer near the soundbar and TV, then try other practical locations in the room. Distance from walls, cabinetry, and furniture—and separation from the bar—can affect the response. There is no single best spot for every room.
Quick Recap
A practical soundbar buying checklist
- Does the bar fit where you can place it, with a clear path to listeners?
- Will its bass and surround approach suit your room and listening priorities?
- If it has upward-firing drivers, can they reach the ceiling without obstruction?
- Do your TV, source devices, apps, and content support the audio formats you want?
- Can you connect the system using ARC/eARC or a supported passthrough arrangement?
- Are separate subwoofers or satellite speakers practical for your space?
