On a Galaxy A17 5G, start by checking which apps have used sensitive permissions, then decide app by app whether to keep, limit, or revoke access. Review advertising personalization separately, and quiet notifications selectively so you do not miss useful alerts. Menu names vary: Samsung support lists Android 15 and Android 16 manuals for the A17 family, and an update notice reports Android 16 for model SM-A176B, but software availability is not identical in every region. If a path below does not match your phone, search Settings for the named control.
Check which apps have used sensitive permissions
Use Privacy Dashboard as a review tool, not as a control that blocks access by itself. Google Android Help explains: “From the Privacy Dashboard, you can see which apps are accessing data, which permissions apps are using, and when that access is happening.”

- Open Settings and look for Security and privacy or Privacy.
- Tap Privacy Dashboard. If you do not see it, search Settings for “Privacy Dashboard.”
- Choose a permission such as camera, microphone, or location to see the apps and access history shown on your phone.
- Tap an app to review its permission and change it if appropriate.
Google’s Android 12-and-later instructions specify seven days of history on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. Those figures should not be assumed to describe every later Android or One UI version; use the history displayed on your A17.
Review app permissions one by one
Samsung’s Security and privacy guidance points to Permission manager for reviewing access. Depending on your software, find it under Settings > Security and privacy, or search Settings for “Permissions” or “Permission manager.” You can also open an app’s info page and look for Permissions.

Check camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, and other permissions that matter to you. Keep access an app needs for a feature you actually use; restrict access that does not fit your use. For location, use a less extensive option if one is offered and suits the feature. Denying a permission can disable part of an app—for example, a calling app may not be able to use the microphone—so consider the practical effect before changing it.
- Ask what the app does: Does its purpose reasonably require this data?
- Consider sensitivity: Location, microphone, camera, and contacts can reveal more than a basic feature needs.
- Choose the least access that works: If the phone offers a narrower option, such as access only while using an app, consider it before allowing broader access.
Inspect advertising and personalization controls separately
App permissions and ad personalization are different controls. Samsung’s support guidance describes settings for advertising content, location services, and personalized recommendations in its privacy area. Android’s ad privacy help covers ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement. Search Settings for “Ads” or review the privacy controls available on your device.

These options govern particular kinds of personalization or measurement; changing them does not promise to remove ads from Samsung services, websites, or third-party apps. Read each on-screen description before turning a control off, since options can differ by Android version, One UI version, and region.

An older Samsung One UI 5 example used Security and Privacy Dashboard > Privacy > Ads > Delete AD ID, as described in Samsung’s One UI 5 article. Treat that as a historical path, not a guaranteed menu sequence or a single switch that stops all advertising. Follow the controls shown on your current A17 instead.

Make notifications quieter without silencing everything
Open Settings > Notifications and review the apps that interrupt you most. Turn off notifications for apps you do not want to hear from. If an app offers notification categories, disable only the promotional or low-priority categories you do not need and keep alerts that matter, such as account security, deliveries, or messages.
Category names and availability vary by app and software version; the A17’s exact notification-category labels are not established across all regional builds. If you cannot find categories, open the app’s notification settings from the Notifications screen and use the controls shown there. Avoid disabling every notification from an app if that could hide an important alert.

Why your A17’s menus may differ
Samsung’s support listings include Android 15 and Android 16 manual variants across Galaxy A17 regional pages, and Samsung has an Android 16 update notice for SM-A176B. That shows the software context changes over time and by market; it does not mean every A17 currently has the same version or menu. Search Settings for the feature name—such as “Privacy Dashboard,” “Permissions,” “Ads,” or “Notifications”—when a listed path does not match your screen.
