A dash cam recording problem usually falls into one of three categories: the camera is not recording, the footage exists but is missing from the app or filed under an unexpected time, or a saved clip will not play. Check recording status and power first, then look for the file directly on the memory card, verify the card against your exact camera model, and only format it after backing up footage you want to keep.
First identify what is going wrong
“Not recording,” “missing footage,” and “video won’t play” describe different failures. A camera may have stopped recording; an app may fail to display a clip that remains on the card; or the clip may be incomplete, corrupted, or incompatible with the playback software. Work through the checks below in that order rather than assuming the camera itself has failed.

If the dash cam is not recording
Confirm power and recording status
- Check that the camera is receiving power and look for its recording indicator or status in the app.
- Review the manual for modes that suspend recording. For the Garmin Dash Cam Mini covered by Garmin’s guidance, Gallery, Live Video, app sharing mode, and connection to a computer can prevent recording. These restrictions are model-specific, not a rule for all dash cams. Garmin’s Mini troubleshooting guide lists those states.
- Check the loop-recording setting if your model provides one. Rexing includes loop recording, power, card suitability, and firmware among its troubleshooting checks; consult its troubleshooting guidance for model-specific steps.
Check the memory card
Remove and reseat the card, then confirm that its type, capacity, and speed meet the requirements for the exact camera model. A card can be faulty even if it is new; an unsupported, corrupted, or failing card may cause recording errors, gaps, or files that will not play.

For example, Garmin specifies microSD or microSDHC, Class 10 or higher, and a maximum capacity of 64 GB for the dēzlCam 785 and Camper/RV 785. Those limits apply to those models only; check the manual or manufacturer support page for your camera before choosing a replacement. If footage is missing from the app
Check the card on a computer
Connect the card to a computer with a suitable card reader and look for the video files there. Garmin advises checking the card directly when connectivity problems may affect what appears in the app. If the files are present, the issue may be app visibility or connection rather than a failure to record. Do not connect the camera itself to a computer and expect it to keep recording if your model’s instructions say that computer connection stops recording.
Search nearby dates and times
Check dates around the trip, not just the date you expect. Garmin warns that footage from certain Dash Cam Mini 2 and Mini 3 situations can appear under a different date or time when the battery is low, the app is connected infrequently, or the date and time are incorrect. Its advice applies to those models; consult Garmin’s Mini 2 and Mini 3 guidance if relevant.

If a saved video will not play
Copy the file to a computer and try the camera maker’s recommended player, or another video player compatible with the camera’s files. There is no single playback format or player established for all dash cams.

If other clips play but one does not, the problem may be an incomplete or corrupted recording, including a card write problem. Rexing notes that sudden battery failure can cause a write-header error in its troubleshooting guidance; treat that as one possible explanation, not a universal diagnosis. If the camera’s own player and another compatible player both fail on the same clip, preserve the original file and check the card and camera maker’s support steps.

Back up clips before formatting or replacing the card
Copy any footage you want to keep to another location before formatting the card. Formatting can erase recordings. Use the camera maker’s own procedure and confirm the supported card type and capacity first; instructions differ by model.
VIOFO explains that continuous loop recording repeatedly writes to and overwrites the card, and associates prolonged lack of formatting with card errors, recording failures, gaps, and corrupted or unplayable files. VIOFO recommends formatting its cards at least once a month; that is its guidance for its own product line, not an industry-wide requirement. Read VIOFO’s formatting instructions and follow your own camera maker’s directions.

Update software and isolate persistent problems
- Use the camera maker’s official instructions to update the dash cam firmware and, where applicable, its companion app. Garmin includes device software and app updates among its Mini troubleshooting checks.
- After backing up wanted clips, follow the maker’s procedure to format the card in the camera. If the problem remains, try another card that is confirmed compatible with your exact model.
- If power remains suspect, test with the original power supply and cable when the manufacturer recommends doing so. A power interruption can stop recording or affect a file being written.
- If recording still fails, or new files repeatedly become unreadable, contact the manufacturer with the camera model, card details, error message, and the steps you have tried. Those specifics help distinguish a card, power, software, or device issue without guessing at a hardware fault.
