To change a Samsung refrigerator water filter, first identify your fridge’s exact model and the compatible cartridge; filter type, location, and replacement steps vary. For the common internal twist-in filters, shut off the water, relieve pressure, remove the old cartridge, fit and lock the correct replacement, reset the filter reminder, then flush and discard water according to your model’s instructions.
Identify your refrigerator’s filter before buying
Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same water filter. Check the model code on the refrigerator label and the part number printed on the installed cartridge, then confirm compatibility in Samsung’s Canadian filter guide and compatibility finder and your refrigerator’s user manual. Samsung’s North American guidance includes HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 for some models; these codes are not universal. Samsung UK also documents other types, including external HAFEX/EXP and internal HAFIN filters, so use the instructions for your region and model.

Internal cartridges are commonly inside the refrigerator, often near the upper-right area or close to the lower drawers. Some models instead use an externally mounted inline filter. The manual identifies the correct location and procedure. Do not assume a cartridge fits because it looks similar to the one you removed.
Prepare to replace an internal cartridge
- Confirm the filter code and the refrigerator model’s compatible replacement using Samsung’s compatibility finder and the manual.
- Shut off the refrigerator’s water supply.
- Dispense water until it stops flowing. This relieves pressure and can make the cartridge easier to remove. Keep a towel nearby for drips.
- Open the filter compartment and identify the cartridge type. HAF-CIN/HAF-QIN and HAFCU1 have different installation alignment cues.
Remove and install the cartridge
For HAF-CIN or HAF-QIN
- Turn the old cartridge counterclockwise until it unlocks. Depending on the housing, the turn may be about 90 or 180 degrees.
- Pull the cartridge straight out.
- Remove the protective cap from the compatible new cartridge.
- Push the new cartridge into the housing and turn it clockwise until it locks.
- Check that the lock symbol aligns with the compartment’s indicator line.
These are the HAF-CIN/HAF-QIN steps described in Samsung’s US replacement guide and Canadian guidance. Follow your manual if its housing or directions differ.

For HAFCU1
- Twist the old cartridge counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it down from the housing.
- Remove the new cartridge’s protective cap.
- Push the cartridge up into the housing and turn it clockwise until secure.
- Align the cartridge notch with the arrow on the housing.
Samsung describes this HAFCU1 procedure in its US replacement guide and Canadian guidance. Other filter arrangements may require different steps.
Reset the reminder and flush the dispenser
Samsung recommends replacing the filter every six months, and the refrigerator’s reminder is based on that interval. After installation, reset the indicator using the control specified in your model’s manual. Many US models reset when you hold Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water for three seconds, but the control is not the same on every refrigerator. Samsung’s US guide and Canadian guide describe model-dependent reset instructions.

Turn the water supply back on and flush the dispenser, discarding the flushed water. The North American guidance calls for about seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses; Samsung UK’s instructions call for 10 litres, or about six to seven minutes. These are regional/model-specific directions, not a single amount for every refrigerator. Use the flush quantity in your manual if it differs. See Samsung’s US instructions and UK instructions.

Fix common replacement problems
The old cartridge is difficult to remove
Confirm that the water supply is off, then dispense water until flow stops to relieve pressure. Samsung Canada notes that this can make removal easier. A few drops may escape; Samsung’s UK instructions for the model shown advise keeping the cartridge horizontal to reduce leakage. Consult your manual for the correct handling position.

The new cartridge will not fit or lock
Do not force it. First check that the part number matches your refrigerator and that the cartridge is oriented and aligned as its instructions specify. Samsung describes a housing-lock issue that can prevent installation: temporarily reinstall the old cartridge, press it into the housing, turn it farther left until it cannot turn further, remove it, and then try the new cartridge again. If that does not resolve the problem, contact Samsung support.
You are considering a non-Samsung cartridge
Samsung recommends genuine filters and warns that filters from other manufacturers may cause fit or housing-damage problems. That is Samsung’s guidance; it does not establish that every third-party filter is unsafe. Whatever you choose, verify exact model compatibility rather than relying on appearance or a broad “universal” claim. See Samsung’s replacement guidance.
