To copy files from a Samsung Galaxy phone to a Windows PC, connect the phone with a data-capable USB cable, unlock it, allow access if prompted, and select Transferring files/Android Auto in the phone’s USB settings. Then use File Explorer to open the phone’s storage and copy the files you need. For a broader device backup, use Smart Switch; for a few files without a cable, Bluetooth is an option.
Copy files over USB with File Explorer
- Connect the phone. Use a USB cable that supports data transfer, not just charging, and connect the Galaxy to the PC. Samsung’s Australian instructions describe Australian-variant Galaxy devices; menus and labels can differ by model, region, and software version. Samsung’s USB transfer guide and its U.S. file-transfer guide cover the same basic process.
- Unlock the phone and allow access. If the phone displays “Allow access to phone data?”, tap Allow. The prompt may not appear for every connection.
- Choose file-transfer mode. Swipe down from the top of the phone screen, tap the USB connection notification, and select Transferring files/Android Auto. Some software versions instead show USB for file transfer before an additional USB options screen.
- Open the phone on the PC. In Windows, open File Explorer and select the phone under This PC or in the sidebar. Open Internal storage, then find the folder you need.
- Copy the files. Select the items and copy or drag them into a folder on the PC. To copy files from the PC to the phone, drag them into an appropriate phone folder, such as Download, Documents, or Music.
- Finish before disconnecting. Wait for the copy to complete and close active copy windows before unplugging the cable.
Find photos, downloads, and documents

Files saved by another app or sharing feature may be in a different folder. To locate an image, open it in Gallery, swipe up, and check the displayed Path; follow that path in File Explorer. If the file is on a removable SD card, open the card’s storage rather than Internal storage. Samsung’s photo-transfer guide also describes using the file path to find images.

Choose a transfer method for the job

Samsung’s documented Bluetooth flow is to choose Receive files in Windows, then use the phone’s Share > Bluetooth flow to send the selected item. Follow the prompts to pair the devices if needed. Samsung documents photo sharing and notes that PC steps vary in its UK guide.

Back up supported data with Smart Switch
Smart Switch is for a device backup or restore, not for browsing every phone item as a regular PC file. Samsung’s U.S. guide lists desktop support for Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later; it says Chromebooks are not compatible. The supported categories vary by device and can include contacts, calendar, messages, photos and videos, music, documents, apps, and certain Galaxy settings or app data. Some synced or private app data is excluded, and messages inside a backup cannot be read on the PC as ordinary files. See Samsung’s Smart Switch guide for its current supported categories and limits.
- Install Smart Switch on the compatible computer and phone.
- Connect the phone to the computer and tap Allow if the phone asks for access.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer and select Backup.
- Choose the categories you want and start the backup.
Smart Switch’s default backup location differs among Windows 10, Windows 11, and Mac. Check the destination displayed by the installed version rather than assuming the backup is in a particular folder.

If the phone does not appear in File Explorer
- The phone charges but no files appear: Try a known data-capable cable, connect directly to a PC USB port instead of through a hub, unlock the phone, and confirm that file-transfer mode is selected. A charge-only cable can power the phone without carrying files.
- No access prompt or MTP connection: Disconnect the phone and restart it, then reconnect. If the issue remains, Samsung advises using Smart Switch’s additional functions to reinstall the device driver before trying again. The exact screens can vary. See Samsung’s Smart Switch transfer troubleshooting.
- A photo is missing from DCIM: Check its Gallery Path; it may be in Download, an app-specific folder, or on the SD card.
- A Smart Switch backup or transfer fails: Check the computer’s available storage, select only the categories you need, free space if necessary, and retry.
