Samsung Electronics has the broader AI-semiconductor portfolio, while SK hynix is more tightly focused on memory. Both companies are developing and shipping high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI systems, but Samsung also combines memory with System LSI chip design, foundry manufacturing and advanced packaging. SK hynix’s AI strategy is centered on HBM, server DRAM, memory modules and enterprise storage. Neither company is being compared here as a designer of general-purpose AI accelerators; the comparison is about the memory and manufacturing infrastructure those accelerators need.
What “AI chips” means in this comparison
AI servers typically use several semiconductor layers rather than one standalone “AI chip.” An accelerator performs the matrix and tensor calculations. HBM sits beside it and supplies data at very high bandwidth. Conventional server DRAM supports the rest of the system, while enterprise SSDs hold training data, model checkpoints and other persistent information. Foundry manufacturing produces logic dies, and advanced packaging connects those dies and memory into a high-performance module.

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix overlap most directly in HBM and other memory products. Samsung additionally sells logic products and manufacturing services. SK hynix’s disclosed strategy is more concentrated on memory technology, capacity and customer co-development. That difference in scope is the central distinction; it is not proof that one company is universally better.
This framing also prevents a common mistake. Calling either company an “AI-chip maker” does not mean it designs every accelerator used in a data center. In this comparison, AI-chip business means the components and manufacturing services that let an accelerator operate: high-bandwidth memory, server memory, storage, logic dies, packaging and the production capacity behind them.

Portfolio breadth: specialist memory supplier versus integrated semiconductor portfolio
| Area | SK hynix | Samsung Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| Primary AI focus | HBM and other DRAM products, with NAND and enterprise SSDs alongside them | HBM and server memory plus System LSI, foundry manufacturing and advanced packaging |
| Products named in recent disclosures | HBM, server DRAM, SOCAMM2, GDDR7 and enterprise SSDs; Solidigm QLC eSSD was cited for AI data-center storage | Server DDR5, SOCAMM2, GDDR7, AI-related NAND, HBM base dies and enterprise SSD products PM1763 and PM1753 |
| Manufacturing role | Memory fabrication, capacity expansion and advanced-packaging projects | Memory fabrication, logic design, foundry services and advanced packaging |
SK hynix’s FY2025 disclosure described its business around DRAM and NAND, with HBM revenue more than doubling year on year in 2025. Samsung’s FY2025 release described a wider stack that included System LSI SoCs, foundry work, AI-related NAND, HBM base dies and advanced-node packaging plans.
In practical terms, an AI-system builder can view SK hynix primarily as a memory partner. Samsung can participate in more layers of the same system, from a logic die manufactured in its foundry to memory and the package that integrates the components. That broader offering may simplify some supply-chain relationships, but the disclosures do not establish that it produces better performance or a larger HBM share.
Portfolio breadth is not the same as product superiority. A buyer may prefer a specialized memory supplier for a qualification program, while another may value a single vendor that can discuss memory, logic fabrication and packaging together. The public announcements do not disclose enough comparable pricing, capacity or yield data to turn that difference into a universal ranking.
HBM and HBM4: where the companies most visibly compete
HBM is stacked DRAM designed to sit close to a processor. Its short, wide connection to the processor allows much more data movement than ordinary memory interfaces, which is why it is essential to many high-end AI accelerators. The memory is supplied as part of a tightly engineered package, so qualification involves the memory stack, the base die, packaging and the accelerator platform rather than a simple plug-in purchase.
SK hynix’s HBM position
In its FY2025 results release, SK hynix said HBM revenue more than doubled from the prior year and that it had stably supplied HBM3E and HBM4. The company said preparations for HBM4 mass production were under way.
In its July 29, 2026 second-quarter report, SK hynix said it began HBM4 mass shipments in the second quarter and planned to ramp production during the second half of the year. It also reported HBM4E sample shipments in the first half of 2026. These are milestones reported by SK hynix; the releases do not provide an independently audited comparison with Samsung’s yields, volumes or customer allocations.
SK hynix also linked the HBM roadmap to wider customer planning. Its second-quarter release said the company had finalized long-term agreements with around 10 customers and was continuing additional discussions. The statement does not identify every customer or disclose allocation, pricing or minimum-purchase terms, but it shows that memory supply is being negotiated over multiple product generations rather than only through spot orders.
Samsung’s HBM position
Samsung’s FY2025 results release said the company was on track to begin delivering HBM4 in the first quarter of 2026. In a March 16, 2026 product announcement, Samsung said HBM4 was in mass production and designed for NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform.
Samsung stated an HBM4 operating speed of 11.7Gbps, with a possible enhancement to 13Gbps. The same announcement showed HBM4E and stated 16Gbps per pin and 4.0TB/s of bandwidth. Those figures are Samsung’s vendor specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test. They should be read as announced product targets and capabilities, not as proof that Samsung is faster than SK hynix in a complete accelerator system.
| Company | Reported 2026 status | Technical figures disclosed | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| SK hynix | HBM4 mass shipments began in Q2 2026; production ramp planned for the second half; HBM4E samples shipped in the first half | No comparable speed or bandwidth figure in the cited releases | Company-reported shipment and sampling milestones |
| Samsung Electronics | HBM4 mass production announced March 16, 2026; Q1 2026 delivery target stated in its FY2025 release | HBM4: 11.7Gbps operating speed, potentially 13Gbps; HBM4E: 16Gbps per pin and 4.0TB/s bandwidth | Samsung-stated specifications and roadmap claims |
The available announcements support saying that both suppliers had active HBM4 production or shipment activity in 2026. They do not support naming a current market-share leader, claiming one company has higher manufacturing yield, or inferring that either supplier is exclusive to a particular accelerator customer.
The AI-memory products around HBM
Server DRAM and SOCAMM2
HBM gets most of the attention, but AI servers also need large pools of conventional memory. SK hynix cited AI-server DRAM demand alongside HBM in its second-quarter 2026 release. It said SOCAMM2 sales grew significantly in that quarter and that shipments using its 1c process began in earnest.
Recommended Free Tools
Samsung listed server DDR5 and SOCAMM2 among its 2026 memory priorities. Its GTC 2026 announcement described SOCAMM2 mass production. The disclosures identify the products and production activity, but do not provide a like-for-like capacity or performance test between the two suppliers.
SOCAMM2 matters because it is part of the memory subsystem surrounding the accelerator, not a replacement for HBM. A system designer can therefore evaluate a supplier on both the stacked memory attached to the accelerator and the conventional memory used by the host server. The two companies’ announcements indicate activity in both categories, while leaving detailed module volumes and customer allocations undisclosed.
GDDR7
Both companies include GDDR7 in their disclosed memory portfolios. GDDR7 is a graphics-memory product, so its presence broadens the suppliers’ exposure to accelerated computing beyond HBM. The cited material does not provide equivalent GDDR7 volume, pricing or benchmark figures for either company.
Enterprise SSDs and AI-related NAND
AI clusters need fast persistent storage for datasets, checkpoints and model-serving infrastructure. SK hynix’s FY2025 release highlighted Solidigm QLC enterprise SSDs for AI data centers, while its Q2 2026 release discussed enterprise SSD demand alongside HBM and server DRAM.
Samsung’s disclosures included AI-related NAND and the enterprise SSD products PM1763 and PM1753 in the context of AI storage and NVIDIA infrastructure. These are business-to-business infrastructure products, not ordinary consumer SSD recommendations. Samsung also discussed personal-device AI storage, which is a separate use case from data-center acceleration.
Storage changes the competitive question. A customer buying an AI platform may need HBM for immediate data movement, server DRAM for system capacity and enterprise SSDs for the data pipeline. SK hynix’s Solidigm products and Samsung’s named enterprise SSDs show that both companies are addressing more than the memory attached directly to an accelerator, although the releases do not provide an apples-to-apples endurance, latency or price comparison.
Manufacturing, packaging and customer strategy
SK hynix: capacity, agreements and co-development
SK hynix said it had finalized long-term agreements with around 10 customers in its Q2 2026 release and was continuing further discussions. The company did not identify every counterparty or publish the commercial terms, so the customer count should be treated as a company-reported figure rather than a complete industry map.
The same release described HBM4E sampling, an HBM4 shipment ramp, accelerated capacity work at M15X and phased projects in Yongin. It also referred to advanced packaging. Together, those measures show why AI-memory competition is not only about the DRAM design: wafer capacity, packaging throughput and predictable delivery schedules can determine whether a customer receives a qualified product at volume.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a server or accelerator maker, co-development can include early samples, electrical validation, thermal work, package qualification and a production schedule. SK hynix’s disclosures point to that type of relationship, but they do not reveal the identity of all counterparties or guarantee that every sampling program will become a large commercial shipment.
Samsung: combining memory, foundry and packaging
Samsung’s strategy adds logic manufacturing and package integration to its memory business. Its FY2025 release reported first-generation 2nm mass production and shipment of 4nm HBM base-die products in the fourth quarter of 2025. HBM base dies are the logic layer beneath the stacked memory, so producing them in-house can give Samsung another point of control over the finished stack.
On July 25, 2026, Samsung announced a memorandum of understanding with Broadcom covering memory, 2nm-and-below foundry technologies and advanced packaging. The companies described an estimated collaboration value exceeding $200 billion across memory and foundry through 2030. That figure is a forward-looking estimate attached to an MOU, not completed revenue, booked orders or guaranteed purchases.
The Broadcom announcement illustrates Samsung’s integration argument: one relationship can encompass memory, a leading foundry node and packaging. It does not prove that all of those services will be purchased at the stated value, nor does it establish a comparable agreement between SK hynix and a named customer. Samsung executive Young Hyun Jun described AI as driving demand for “tightly integrated semiconductor technologies spanning memory, logic and advanced packaging,” which is consistent with that broader strategy.

Roadmap language can describe different stages. “Sample shipments” usually indicates that customers are receiving units for validation. “Mass production” describes a manufacturing stage, while “mass shipments” indicates that products are being delivered commercially. A stated future ramp is a plan, not evidence of the final annual volume.
That distinction matters in this comparison. SK hynix reported HBM4E samples in the first half of 2026 and HBM4 mass shipments beginning in the second quarter, with a second-half production ramp planned. Samsung said HBM4 was in mass production on March 16 and had previously said it was on track for first-quarter delivery. Those statements demonstrate active programs, but they are not a standardized scorecard.
Financial figures: useful context, but not an apples-to-apples ranking
| Company and period | Revenue | Operating profit | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| SK hynix FY2025 | ₩97.1467 trillion | ₩47.2063 trillion | Full-year company figures reported in its 2026 FY2025 release |
| Samsung Electronics FY2025 | ₩333.6 trillion | ₩43.6 trillion | Total-company annual figures; Samsung is a diversified conglomerate, so these are not AI-semiconductor revenue |
| Samsung Device Solutions, Q4 2025 | ₩44.0 trillion | ₩16.4 trillion | Quarterly semiconductor-related segment figures, not a full-year comparison with SK hynix |
| SK hynix Q2 2026 | ₩79.3187 trillion | ₩60.5426 trillion | Preliminary results subject to change through audit; do not annualize the quarter |
SK hynix’s reported FY2025 numbers describe a memory-focused company whose HBM sales were growing rapidly. Samsung’s total-company revenue includes businesses outside semiconductors, so its larger headline revenue cannot be used to conclude that its AI-chip operation is larger. The more relevant Samsung figure in this context is the Device Solutions segment, but that segment still includes more than HBM and is reported for a different period.
SK hynix’s Q2 2026 figures require additional caution because the release called them preliminary and subject to change through audit. A single quarter with ₩79.3187 trillion in revenue and ₩60.5426 trillion in operating profit should not be multiplied by four to forecast a year. Likewise, Samsung’s ₩333.6 trillion annual revenue is a corporate figure, not a measurement of its AI-memory sales.

Does Samsung make AI chips, or only memory?
Samsung does make more than memory. Its System LSI division designs logic products, its foundry manufactures chips for customers, and its advanced-packaging work connects logic and memory. The company also supplies HBM, server memory, NAND and enterprise SSDs.
That does not mean Samsung designs the general-purpose AI accelerators used by every data center. In the disclosures covered here, Samsung’s AI role is best understood as supplying memory and enabling semiconductor infrastructure, with the option to participate in logic fabrication and package integration.
Is SK hynix an AI-chip company?
SK hynix is an AI-infrastructure semiconductor company, but its strongest identity in this comparison is as a memory manufacturer rather than an accelerator designer. HBM is its flagship AI product, supported by server DRAM, SOCAMM2, GDDR7 and enterprise SSDs. Its customer agreements, capacity projects and sampling program show a strategy built around supplying and co-developing those components at scale.

- Required memory layer: determine whether the program needs HBM, server DDR5, SOCAMM2, GDDR7, enterprise SSDs or a combination.
- Qualification stage: distinguish samples, announced mass production and actual mass shipments when setting a launch schedule.
- Package and logic requirements: ask whether the supplier must provide only memory or also a base die, foundry service and advanced packaging.
- Supply commitments: review the duration and terms of any long-term agreement rather than relying on a public customer-count statement.
- Performance evidence: treat vendor speed and bandwidth figures as specifications until independent system testing is available.
- Storage fit: evaluate enterprise SSD endurance and data-path requirements separately from HBM performance; a consumer SSD is not an equivalent substitute for a named enterprise product.
These checks explain why there may not be one winner for every design. An accelerator maker seeking an integrated memory, logic and packaging relationship may prioritize Samsung’s breadth. A customer concentrating on memory supply and co-development may prefer SK hynix’s specialist model. Commercial availability, qualification results and contractual terms remain project-specific.

- It can show portfolio scope: SK hynix is more memory-centered; Samsung spans memory, System LSI, foundry and packaging.
- It can show disclosed milestones: both companies reported HBM4 production, shipments or active roadmaps during 2026.
- It can show adjacent opportunities: server DRAM, SOCAMM2, GDDR7 and enterprise SSDs are important parts of AI infrastructure demand.
- It cannot establish a current HBM market-share ranking: the cited releases do not contain comparable independent share data.
- It cannot prove a performance winner: the published speed and bandwidth figures are vendor specifications, not independent tests.
- It cannot map every customer relationship: SK hynix’s “around 10” long-term agreements are not fully identified, and Samsung’s Broadcom announcement is an MOU rather than realized sales.
Which business model fits which supply-chain need?
Choose the Samsung model when integration breadth matters
A customer seeking a combination of memory, logic manufacturing and advanced packaging may find Samsung’s broader set of capabilities relevant. That is a supply-chain and integration advantage in principle, not a guarantee of capacity, qualification or commercial terms for a particular project.
Choose the SK hynix model when memory specialization is the priority
A customer focused on HBM, server DRAM, memory modules and enterprise storage may value SK hynix’s concentrated roadmap and memory co-development approach. Its reported long-term agreements and capacity expansion indicate an emphasis on sustained supply, although the public releases do not disclose each customer’s allocation.
For investors, separate segment data from corporate scale
Compare semiconductor segments and reporting periods rather than placing Samsung’s total-company revenue beside SK hynix’s memory-heavy totals. Also distinguish audited annual figures from SK hynix’s preliminary Q2 2026 results, and treat announced collaboration values as estimates until purchases and revenue are actually reported.
Bottom line
Samsung and SK hynix compete directly in HBM, but they approach AI infrastructure from different starting points. SK hynix is the more concentrated memory specialist, with HBM at the center of its AI strategy and server memory, SOCAMM2, GDDR7 and enterprise SSDs around it. Samsung combines those memory products with System LSI, foundry manufacturing and advanced packaging, giving it a wider semiconductor offering. By 2026, both had reported meaningful HBM4 progress. The public disclosures support that portfolio distinction and those product milestones, but not a definitive claim about market share, yield, customer exclusivity or an overall winner.
