Samsung Edge lighting uses animated effects around the display to alert you to notifications. On Samsung’s documented current US interface, find it at Settings → Notifications → Notification pop-up style → Edge lighting style. If those labels are missing, your Galaxy’s software version or model may use a different menu or offer a different set of effects.
What Edge lighting does
Edge lighting is a visual notification effect that appears along the edge of a Galaxy phone’s display. Samsung describes it as a way to notice alerts without opening the phone. It is a notification effect, not a guarantee that every app or notification type will produce an animation.

Find Edge lighting in your Galaxy settings
Current notification-menu path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then Notification pop-up style.
- Choose Edge lighting style.
This is the path in Samsung’s US support instructions: Samsung US: Edge lighting and LED notifications on Galaxy phones. Menu names and options can differ by model, region, and software version. If you do not see the listed controls, search Settings for “Edge lighting.”
Why older tutorials show a different path
Earlier Galaxy software placed the controls under Settings → Display → Edge screen → Edge lighting. Samsung Korea documents the move into notification pop-up settings beginning with Android 11; its older instructions cover the Display path. Choose an effect, color, and appearance
From Edge lighting style, select an available effect, preview it, and choose a color. Samsung’s US instructions name Basic, Bubble, and Heart among the effects and describe automatic or custom color choices. Open Advanced to adjust transparency, width, and duration. The exact choices depend on the phone and software; Samsung notes that effect availability varies across device families.
Set when the effect appears
Samsung’s documentation describes options for displaying Edge lighting when the screen is on, when it is off, or always. Look for the visibility controls in your phone’s Edge lighting settings; their names and availability can vary by software version and model. Samsung UK’s older instructions document these choices, but they should not be assumed to appear identically on every current Galaxy phone.

What to expect if a notification does not light the edge
Edge lighting does not necessarily appear for every notification. The Samsung Galaxy S9 user manual specifically cautions that some notifications may not display as Edge lighting depending on notification type. That statement is specific to the S9 manual, not a current compatibility list for every Galaxy model or app. Check the notification’s own settings and your Edge lighting visibility options if an expected effect does not appear. Samsung Japan’s support page, updated April 3, 2026, says the number of selectable effects differs on A series and M23 5G devices. This is one documented example of model variation, not a complete model-by-model list.
