The immurok IK-1 is a rechargeable, Bluetooth fingerprint key for unlocking and authorizing selected tasks on a computer without a built-in fingerprint reader. It is currently listed for preorder at US$69, with shipment expected in December 2026—not an established retail product with a track record of independent testing. It is not Apple Touch ID and cannot replace a FIDO security key or passkey for signing in to websites.
What the immurok IK-1 is—and is not
The IK-1 is a standalone capacitive fingerprint device that connects to a computer over Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE). Its USB-C port is for charging and does not carry data, so plugging it into a computer is not an alternative connection method. The product is intended to add fingerprint-based local authentication to compatible computers that lack a built-in reader.

That use is distinct from website authentication. The project creator says the device does not support FIDO or passkeys and is not a substitute for Apple Touch ID. A fingerprint match on the IK-1 is intended to authorize supported local computer actions; it does not create a website passkey or act as a hardware security key for websites. The creator describes the distinction as local-machine authentication versus credentials used to prove identity to websites.
What it can do, and which computers it supports
The manufacturer lists screen unlock, sudo and administrator authorization, SSH and Git signing, selected password-manager unlock, TOTP access, and approval of selected privileged commands. These functions depend on the operating system and software integrations; a headline feature list does not establish that every function works with every app or configuration. The manufacturer does not list ChromeOS support.

Setup: pairing and fingerprint enrollment
The manufacturer’s setup directions involve two pairing steps rather than a simple plug-in. Pair the device in the computer’s Bluetooth settings, then complete a second encrypted pairing in the companion app and confirm it using the button on the key. Fingerprint enrollment requires repeated sensor touches at different angles.

The device can pair with up to two computers, but only one connection is active at a time. The manufacturer says one enrolled finger can be assigned to switch the key between those paired computers. That may be useful for a two-computer desk, although it is not the same as simultaneous access to both hosts.

Design, specifications, and claims to treat as unverified
The IK-1 has a CNC-machined, anodized aluminum body. According to the manufacturer, it measures 44 × 44 × 14.2 mm, weighs about 40 g, supports up to five enrolled fingerprints, and uses a 110 mAh lithium-polymer battery charged through USB-C. The manufacturer states a match time below 500 milliseconds and battery life of more than one month per charge. These are specifications and estimates published by the maker; no independent test data establishes real-world matching speed, battery life, reliability, or biometric accuracy.

How the manufacturer describes its security model
The manufacturer says fingerprint templates stay on the key and are matched there. In its description, the host computer receives an HMAC-signed “match succeeded” result rather than the fingerprint template. It also describes ECDH P-256 pairing, signed firmware updates, a case-opening tamper response that wipes the paired device, and no account, server, or telemetry.

Those statements describe the intended design; they are not evidence of an independent security audit or proof that every implementation behaves as claimed. The project’s public repository distinguishes software licenses: companion apps are listed as Apache 2.0, while firmware and other components are source-available under BSL 1.1. The project says the firmware and hardware designs convert to Apache 2.0 in 2030. Calling the entire product “fully open source” would omit that distinction. See the project repository, About page, and creator FAQ for the project’s published licensing and security descriptions.

Campaign totals are not consistent across the project’s own pages: the About page reports 4,634 backers and S$480,299 pledged, while the Kickstarter FAQ displays 4,665 backers and S$483,756. Neither figure should be treated as an uncontested final total. The current product page’s December 2026 shipment estimate is the relevant listed preorder timing, but it remains an expectation rather than a confirmed delivery.
Who should consider it?
- It may fit: someone who wants a separate fingerprint sensor for supported local computer tasks, has a listed macOS, Windows, or Linux configuration, and is comfortable buying a preorder based on manufacturer claims.
- It is not the right tool for: someone seeking a FIDO/passkey device for websites, ChromeOS support, a wired USB data connection, or a product whose speed, accuracy, and battery performance have already been independently established.
For a prospective buyer, the key question is not whether a fingerprint key sounds convenient; it is whether the specific local actions and software integrations they need are supported on their computer. The evidence available from the maker and project materials explains the design and intended use, but does not yet establish how well the device performs in everyday use.
