Samsung Cloud offers two different ways to protect or access Galaxy data: sync keeps selected categories aligned across devices using the same Samsung account, while device backup saves supported categories for restoration later. You can find both in Galaxy settings, but the available options depend on your device, software, country, and carrier.
Sync and backup solve different problems
Sync is for keeping selected data consistent across devices signed in to the same Samsung account. Samsung describes it as matching data on synced devices. An edit or deletion can therefore carry over to the other devices using that account.

A device backup is a restorable snapshot of supported categories from a Galaxy device. It is intended to help recover data on a compatible Galaxy device, such as after a reset or when setting up another device. It does not make every file or app available for separate download.
| Need | Sync | Device backup |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Keep selected categories aligned across devices using the same Samsung account. | Save supported device categories for later restoration. |
| Examples | Available categories may include contacts, calendar, reminders, Samsung Notes, browser data, and Wi-Fi settings. | May include call and message history, device-saved contacts and calendar, clock, settings, home screen, apps, and voice recordings. |
| Important consideration | Changes and deletions may propagate. Google-account contacts and calendars are not synced through Samsung Cloud. | Available categories vary. Samsung Canada says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up. |
| Where to start | Samsung account sync settings; choose categories and, if needed, tap Sync now. | Samsung Cloud backup settings; choose categories and tap Back up now, or configure automatic backup. |
Category lists and menu labels can vary by model, software version, country, and carrier. Check the options on your own device rather than assuming every Galaxy offers the same set.

Turn on Samsung Cloud sync
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts.
- Tap your Samsung account, then open Sync account.
- Enable the categories you want to keep synced. If a category has its own screen, open it and tap Sync now to request a sync.
Samsung’s India support page also describes accessing Samsung Cloud through Settings > Accounts and backup. The precise route may differ across devices and regions, so use the Samsung account and Cloud options visible in your settings.
Back up a Galaxy device
- Go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data.
- Select the categories you want included.
- Tap Back up now. To use automatic backup, configure it from the same backup screen if that option is available on your device.
Samsung Canada says automatic backup requires the device to be charging, its screen to be off, and a Wi-Fi connection. Samsung lists categories such as call and message history, device-saved contacts and calendar, clock, settings, home screen, apps, and voice recordings, but the supported list varies by device and operating system.

Samsung Canada recommends using Wi-Fi and warns that mobile data charges may apply. It also states that files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud.

Restore a backup to a Galaxy device
- On the Galaxy device, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Restore data.
- Choose the relevant device backup and select the categories to restore.
- Start the restore and follow any on-screen prompts.
This route is also relevant when setting up a new Galaxy device or recovering after a factory reset. Sign in with the Samsung account that holds the backup. Samsung’s support guidance says you cannot download individual backup files from the web portal; restoration is done through a compatible device.

Gallery photos and videos are a separate case
Do not assume Samsung Cloud device backup includes your Gallery library. Samsung US says Gallery photos and videos cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud. It identifies Microsoft OneDrive as the option used for Samsung Gallery sync. That Gallery integration is separate from the Samsung Cloud device-backup categories, so check Gallery’s own sync settings if you want photos and videos synced.
Check Samsung Cloud from a browser
You can sign in to the Samsung Cloud web portal, where Samsung says you may be asked to complete two-step verification. The portal can show summaries for synced apps and list device backups, but it does not provide individual backup items for download. Use a compatible Galaxy device to restore backup data.

Why contacts or calendars may not sync
Check which account owns the contact or calendar entries. Samsung says contacts and calendars associated with a Google account are not synchronized through Samsung Cloud. Enabling Samsung Cloud sync does not move that data into the Samsung account; look at the sync settings for the account where those entries are stored.
