Samsung Cloud vs Google One: Which Galaxy Backup Should You Use?

Samsung Cloud and Google backup protect different parts of a Galaxy. Compare what each covers, how restores work, and what to check before wiping or replacing your phone.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Galaxy owners, the safest choice is to use Samsung Cloud and Google backup together where their coverage differs—and to verify each backup before resetting, repairing, or replacing a phone. Samsung Cloud can preserve Galaxy-specific settings and layout; Android backup covers a different set of device data, while Google Photos handles photos and videos separately. Neither is a complete copy of every app and file.

One timely change matters: Samsung says Gallery will no longer sync with Microsoft OneDrive after September 30, 2026. That cutoff has passed. If you relied on that link, check where your existing photos are accessible and which service is backing up new ones.

What Samsung Cloud and Google backup actually cover

“Backup” can mean device data, synced service data, or photos and videos. These are separate functions, and the categories available on a particular Galaxy can vary by model, software, carrier, and country.

Samsung Cloud: Galaxy-focused backup and sync

Samsung lists call and message history, phone-stored contacts and calendar entries, clock data, selected settings, Home screen layout, apps and app settings, and Voice Recorder recordings among its device backup and restore categories. Some large messages may not be backed up; Samsung also notes exclusions for certain ringtone and wallpaper data. Settings can include accessibility, keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, biometrics, Always On Display, and Samsung DeX information. See Samsung Cloud’s backup categories.

Samsung Cloud also syncs supported Samsung services, including items such as Calendar, Samsung-account Contacts, Samsung Browser, Notes, Health, Pass, Gallery, Reminder, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth information. Sync and device backup are not interchangeable: sync keeps supported service data aligned, while device backup has its own selectable list and restore flow. The exact supported items depend on device and software. Samsung describes the service at What is Samsung Cloud?.

Do not assume Samsung Cloud device backup contains a full Gallery photo library. Samsung lists photo sync separately from device backup, and the Gallery/OneDrive integration has a separate status described below.

Google One backup, Android data, and Google Photos

Google’s Android backup covers apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS messages. Photos and videos are handled through Google Photos, not simply by turning on Android device backup. RCS messages are backed up when using Google Messages; Phone by Google can handle call settings and blocked numbers. Check both Android backup details and Google Photos’ backup settings, including which folders are selected. Google’s current instructions are at Back up or restore data on your Android device.

Coverage is not guaranteed for every app. Google explicitly warns that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. Important app content may require the app’s own account, export, or backup process.

Comparison at a glance

What matters Samsung Cloud Google backup / Google One
Device data Galaxy-oriented categories including selected settings, Home screen layout, apps, calls/messages, and other listed items; availability varies. Android backup lists apps/app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS; app support is not universal.
Photos and videos Do not treat device backup as a complete Gallery archive. Gallery sync is a separate service and Samsung says OneDrive sync ended after September 30, 2026. Google Photos backs up photos and videos according to its own settings; inspect included folders.
Restore path Restore a selected backup from Samsung account settings and Samsung Cloud; menus vary. Generally restore during setup of a new or reset Android phone; Google also documents selecting a prior backup when adding an account to a phone already set up.
Storage Samsung’s cited pages do not establish one universal storage allowance for all users and regions. Google documents up to 15 GB at no charge for a Google Account; more storage is available through Google One. Plan pricing varies by market and can change.
Local copy Smart Switch can back up to a computer or supported external storage, including a USB flash drive. Google’s cited Android backup guidance describes cloud backup and does not establish a local-copy option for this comparison.

Which backup should you use?

Choose Samsung Cloud as a key layer for Galaxy-specific continuity

Use it when the categories you care about include Samsung settings, Home screen arrangement, or supported Samsung-service data. Confirm that your phone offers those categories and that they are enabled before relying on them.

Choose Google backup for an Android-account restore path

Google backup is useful if you want the Google-account-based Android restore flow or use Google services. Treat Google Photos as a separate setup step for media, and make sure the desired folders are included.

Use both when their coverage complements each other

For many owners, both services cover different useful categories. Check that each has completed a recent backup, note which account it uses, and make sure the available storage is sufficient. Having both does not mean the phone has been cloned or that every app is recoverable.

Add a local copy for files you cannot afford to lose

Samsung documents Smart Switch backups to PC or Mac and supported external storage, including USB flash drives. The connection and storage options depend on the Galaxy model. A local copy can provide another route if cloud storage or account access is unavailable, but verify that the files are present and readable.

How restore works—and why to check before wiping

Restore Samsung Cloud data

Samsung’s US support guide gives this route: open Samsung account settings, choose Samsung Cloud, then Restore data and select the backup. Labels and availability can differ by model, region, carrier, and software. The guide is at Samsung Galaxy backup and restore.

Restore Google backup

Google’s usual restore happens while setting up a new or reset phone. Its help page also describes choosing a prior backup when adding the account to an already-set-up phone. Google warns that a restore can be incomplete if the destination runs an older Android version than the source. Google says backup and full restore can each take up to 24 hours; these are documented maximum durations, not a guarantee that every transfer takes that long.

Before a repair, reset, or trade-in

  1. On the old phone, open Samsung Cloud and Android backup details and check the latest completed backup time and the account shown for each.
  2. Open Google Photos separately and confirm backup is on and the folders containing important media are included.
  3. Check important apps individually; their data may need an in-app backup, sync, or export because neither service promises universal app restoration.
  4. If using Smart Switch, make the computer or external-storage copy and verify it contains the files you need.
  5. Keep the old phone until the replacement has restored and you have checked key contacts, messages, settings, app data, and photos.

What to do about Samsung Gallery and OneDrive now

Samsung’s current Cloud page says Gallery will no longer sync with Microsoft OneDrive after September 30, 2026; that date has passed. The page does not establish what happened to each user’s existing files, so do not infer that they were deleted or automatically moved. Check Gallery, OneDrive, and Google Photos directly: confirm that existing media is accessible and that future uploads are going to the service you intend. Samsung’s notice appears on Samsung Cloud About.

Temporary backup for a repair or upgrade

Samsung describes a temporary Cloud backup for eligible repairs or upgrades, with unlimited photos, videos, files, and more for up to 30 days. This is a stated retention window for the temporary service, not a general promise about how long ordinary Samsung Cloud backups remain available. Eligibility and device requirements apply, so check the instructions for your model at Samsung Cloud temporary backups.

How much storage do you need?

Google documents up to 15 GB at no charge for a Google Account, shared across its account storage uses; additional storage is available through Google One. The free allowance may be consumed by existing account data as well as backups, so check remaining space rather than assuming the full amount is available for your phone. Google’s cited page does not set a stable universal plan price, so check current terms in your market instead of relying on an old figure.

For Samsung Cloud, use the storage and backup information shown in your own account and device. The service-level documentation cited here does not establish a universal allowance that applies to every region and user.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
