To set up a Samsung Galaxy camera, open the Camera app and use its settings to choose framing, video size, and any shooting aids your phone supports. On the Galaxy A17 and S26 examples in Samsung’s guides, tap the four-dot Quick controls icon, then Settings. Menus and options differ by model, software, and region, so treat the steps below as a starting point rather than a universal menu map.
Where to find camera settings
Open Camera from your Apps screen. On some Galaxy phones, you can also launch it from the lock screen or assign a double press of the Side button to open the camera; those shortcuts depend on the model and settings available on your phone.

Choose a photo ratio and video size
Set the photo framing for its destination
Think about where the image will be viewed before changing its aspect ratio. A square crop may suit a square layout, while a taller frame can fit a vertical display. Available labels vary: Samsung Gulf lists examples including 1:1, 3:4, 9:16, and full screen, but not every Galaxy offers all of them. Find the ratio control in the camera interface or settings on your device, then choose from the options it actually shows.

Check video resolution in Video mode
Switch to Video mode and inspect the video-size control to see the resolutions available on your phone. Do not assume that another Galaxy’s choices will match yours. For example, the cited Galaxy A17 guide lists FHD and HD and says its frame rate cannot be adjusted. That limitation applies to that example, not to Galaxy phones generally.

Pick a camera mode for the scene
Start with Photo or Video if you want the camera to choose settings automatically. If you want more control or are shooting in a particular situation, use a specialized mode when your model includes it.

These modes and controls are not present on every Galaxy. Samsung’s A17 guide and S26 guide show why it is worth checking the mode tray and device-specific support page instead of looking for a universal list.

Consider optional camera assists
Camera assists can make routine shooting easier, but their names and availability vary. Look for them in the Camera app and try them individually so you can tell whether they help with your subject.
- Scene optimization can adjust aspects such as exposure, contrast, and white balance based on the scene on supported devices.
- Document scanning can help capture a page; some supported models also offer QR scanning.
- Tracking autofocus can help keep a selected moving subject in focus.
- Video stabilization can reduce the appearance of camera shake in video.
- Composition lines provide guides for framing a shot.
- Shot suggestions may offer framing guidance on supported models.
Samsung documents several of these options for the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE. Availability on those models does not establish availability on other Galaxy phones. Stabilization and autofocus assists also do not replace holding the phone steadily.

Make the shutter easier to use
On the cited Galaxy S26, shooting options are under Camera > Quick controls > Settings > Shooting methods. Depending on the model, options may include using the volume buttons, voice commands, a floating shutter button, or palm recognition. These can be useful for selfies or hands-free framing.
Samsung notes that assigning the volume buttons to capture means they cannot adjust sound during video recording on the documented S26. Check your phone’s guide before relying on the same controls or behavior on another model. See Samsung’s Galaxy S26 camera instructions.

Get steadier Night mode photos
Night mode benefits from a steady camera. Samsung Gulf advises: “Keep your phone steady or use a tripod for the best results.” A stable surface is a simple alternative if you do not have a tripod; the accessory is optional. Avoid moving the phone while the image is being captured.
