The exact requirement depends on whether you are using AirPlay, Google Cast, Android screen casting, or Windows Miracast—and whether your devices support that method. A local Wi-Fi network and an internet connection are different things: devices can communicate over Wi-Fi even when broadband is down.
Wi-Fi and internet are not the same requirement
Wi-Fi is the wireless connection between devices or between a device and a local network. Internet access connects that network to online services. A mirroring link may work locally without internet, but that does not guarantee that every device, app, or streaming service will work offline.

Wireless mirroring is not one universal technology. The source device and display must support a compatible method. Some setups use the same Wi-Fi network; supported peer-to-peer connections can work without joining an existing network. Wired video output may also be possible when the devices support it.
What each mirroring method needs
| Method | Typical local connection | Does the link require internet? | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPlay from iPhone or iPad | Apple’s standard instructions say to connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network. | The standard setup instructions do not say internet is required for the mirroring link. | Apple documents peer-to-peer AirPlay without an existing network for supported hardware and software; it is not guaranteed for every device combination. Some video apps do not support AirPlay. Apple’s AirPlay instructions and AirPlay deployment guidance. |
| Google Cast from a Cast-enabled app | The sender and receiver must be on the same Wi-Fi network. | Google’s setup instructions establish the network requirement but do not say that every app or service works without internet. | On iOS 14+ and macOS 15+, Local Network permission is needed for device discovery. Google Cast instructions. |
| Android screen casting to a Cast receiver | Google recommends the same Wi-Fi network and describes a direct connection during screen casting. | Google’s support page does not state that internet is necessary for the screen link itself. | AP/client isolation or guest-network restrictions can prevent devices from communicating. Google’s Android casting guidance and Google’s setup troubleshooting. |
| Windows Miracast projection | A compatible Miracast display or adapter is needed. When discovering another Windows PC as a wireless display, Wi-Fi should be on. | Microsoft’s instructions do not establish internet as a requirement for local projection. | A Miracast dongle or adapter can connect a compatible Windows device to an external display. Can you mirror your phone to a TV without internet?
Sometimes. If the phone and receiver can establish a supported local connection, losing internet service does not necessarily prevent the screen link. Apple’s peer-to-peer AirPlay documentation says devices do not need to be on the same network—or on any network—for that supported mode. That exception depends on compatible hardware and software; Apple’s ordinary consumer instructions still direct users to put the iPhone or iPad and receiver on the same Wi-Fi network.

Google Cast guidance requires a shared Wi-Fi network for app-based casting, but does not say that internet access is required for the local connection itself. Whether the video or app then plays offline is a separate question: online content, account checks, app functions, and software updates may still need internet. Apple also recommends an internet-connected infrastructure network for updates and internet-provided content.
Know whether you are casting an app or mirroring the screen
“Casting” can mean sending playback from a supported app to a receiver, or mirroring the entire screen. These are different workflows and can have different network and content requirements. Google’s Cast instructions for a Cast-enabled app require the sender and receiver to share Wi-Fi. Android screen casting has its own guidance, including possible direct connection behavior. Use the directions for the specific feature you intend to use rather than assuming every feature called “cast” works the same way.

Why your phone or computer cannot find the display
- Check compatibility. Confirm that both devices support the same method. An HDMI input by itself does not mean a TV supports AirPlay, Google Cast, or Miracast. Microsoft’s adapter route also requires a compatible Miracast source/display path.
- Check the network. For standard AirPlay mirroring and Google Cast, connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network. Make sure one has not joined a guest network or another saved network.
- Allow local-network discovery where required. For Google Cast on iOS 14+ or macOS 15+, check that the app has Local Network access enabled.
- Check router isolation settings. AP/client isolation and guest-network restrictions can prevent Google Cast devices from discovering or communicating with one another. Google identifies isolation as a possible cause of setup and connection problems.
- For Windows projection, check the receiver. Turn on Wi-Fi. If projecting to another Windows PC, make sure the wireless display app is installed and launched. Confirm that the destination display supports Miracast or uses a compatible adapter.
- Separate a link problem from a content problem. If mirroring connects but a video or app will not play, check whether that app supports the selected mirroring method and whether its online service is reachable. Apple notes that some video apps may not support AirPlay.
When a cable may be the simpler option
A wired video connection can avoid wireless discovery and local-network setup, but compatibility depends on the source device, the display, and any required adapter. The support guidance cited here does not establish which wired adapters work with every phone or TV, so check the manufacturers’ current instructions for the exact models before relying on a cable.
