Some Japanese carrier versions of the Galaxy A23 5G are rated IPX5/IPX8. That rating applies to those specific variants, not the entire A23 family.
Which Galaxy A23 models have a water-resistance rating?
“Galaxy A23” refers to phones sold in different markets and through different carriers. The model code and its regional documentation matter more than the family name.

Samsung’s Canada support page says ratings and protection can vary by model and region, and directs owners to the manual if their device is not on its list. The A23 is not on that page; its absence is not proof about every regional version. Check the model number in the phone’s settings or on its packaging, then consult the corresponding manual. What IPX5 and IPX8 mean—and what they do not
IP ratings describe performance under defined tests, not a promise that a phone is waterproof in ordinary use. Samsung says IPX8 testing involves still fresh water at a depth of 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. KDDI lists IPX5/IPX8 for the SCG18 and describes the rating conditions, including a fresh-water spray test for IPX5 and static immersion for IPX8. The conditions are controlled; they do not establish protection against every kind of water exposure, pressure, or liquid.

The “X” in IPX5/IPX8 indicates that a dust-protection rating is not provided as part of that particular water rating. The Japanese carrier models separately list IP6X for dust resistance. Dust and water classifications describe different tests.
Can you use an A23 in rain or near water?
If you have the LTE SM-A235F or US Galaxy A23 5G covered by the specifications above, treat it as unrated and keep it dry. Those sources do not establish a rating for those models. If you have a Japanese SC-56C or SCG18, the listed IPX5/IPX8 rating is limited to the specified test conditions; it is not a reason to deliberately expose the phone to water.

Even a rated phone can be less protected after wear, impact, or improper handling. Samsung cautions that water resistance may weaken over time and advises against high-pressure water and contaminated liquids. If you are unsure which variant you own, the safest choice is to avoid water exposure until you verify the exact model and manual.

- Disconnect it from power and accessories. Do not plug in a charger or accessory while the connection port is wet.
- If it is not rated, keep it off. Samsung advises not turning on a device that is not water resistant while moisture may remain inside.
- Remove removable items where possible. Take out the SIM card, SD card, and similar removable items if your model allows it.
- Dry the exterior gently. Use a clean, soft cloth, such as a microfiber electronics cloth. Drying the outside does not remove liquid inside the phone.
- Arrange service promptly if an unrated phone was exposed. Samsung recommends having it checked by a service center.
For a water-resistant device, Samsung recommends drying it thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth and waiting until the external connection jack is fully dry before reconnecting anything. Do not use a hair dryer, external heat, compressed air, or cleaning chemicals to dry the phone. See Samsung’s water-resistance and wet-device guidance.
