The original Samsung 990 EVO is a capable mainstream NVMe SSD, but its appeal depends on your system and workload. Its strengths include up to 5,000 MB/s sequential reads, support for specified PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2 host configurations, and a compact M.2 2280 design. Its trade-offs are a DRAM-less, Host Memory Buffer (HMB) architecture and performance that reviewers found less impressive in some benchmark and sustained-write scenarios. Those figures and reviews apply to the 990 EVO, not the later 990 EVO Plus.

What are the Samsung 990 EVO’s main advantages?
Rated speeds suit many everyday uses
Samsung rates sequential reads at up to 5,000 MB/s and writes at up to 4,200 MB/s. These peaks make the drive a plausible choice for a mainstream internal upgrade, but they do not predict every task: sequential transfers and sustained writes can behave differently from routine app launches, game loading or mixed computer use.

Two supported interface configurations
Samsung specifies the drive for PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2. This gives it flexibility across hosts that implement one of those configurations, but it is not a full-bandwidth PCIe 5.0 x4 SSD. The interface label alone does not guarantee a speed advantage; the host’s lanes, implementation and workload all matter.

Compact format and two capacities
The M.2 2280 format is common in internal storage upgrades, and Samsung lists 1TB and 2TB options. Whether either fits depends on the computer’s slot, clearance and supported drive type—not just whether the machine has an M.2 connector.
HMB supports a DRAM-less design
The 990 EVO has no onboard DRAM cache. Instead, it uses Host Memory Buffer, which Samsung describes as linking the SSD with host memory to support performance. This is a design trade-off, not proof that the drive cannot work as a boot drive. What it means in practice depends on the workload and cache state.

What are the drawbacks and trade-offs?
It is not a flagship-performance choice
The 990 EVO’s official sequential ratings are lower than those of Samsung’s higher-end 990 PRO. If your priority is top-tier SSD performance, compare the specific models’ own specifications and independent results rather than treating the EVO as a PRO equivalent.
Results vary with workload and cache
Tom’s Hardware characterized the 990 EVO as relatively good all-around and in sustained performance within its test context. PCWorld, reviewing the 2TB model, found its benchmark showing unspectacular, while reporting more favorable real-world sequential transfers when secondary cache was available. Taken together, those findings argue against a single universal verdict: short or ordinary activity may tell a different story from large writes or a test that stresses the drive after cache is used. Neither review establishes one slowdown rate that applies to every system or transfer.

The efficiency claim needs context
Samsung said the 990 EVO offers up to 70% improved power efficiency compared with the 970 EVO Plus. That is a vendor comparison, not a promise of a 70% improvement in a laptop’s battery life. Tom’s Hardware questioned how closely measured efficiency matched Samsung’s claim and reported a higher-than-expected maximum power result in its testing. Real power and battery impact depend on the drive’s activity and the host system.

Current value depends on the price you can get
Specifications and historical launch information cannot establish whether the 990 EVO is a good deal today. Compare the current local price of the capacity you need with similarly compatible drives, and weigh performance under your workload rather than choosing by a peak sequential number alone.

Check the computer or motherboard documentation before buying. An M.2 socket may support SATA, NVMe or both; the 990 EVO requires a compatible NVMe implementation. Confirm the slot’s interface and lane configuration, physical clearance and supported M.2 length. Samsung’s PCIe support statement does not ensure that every host will provide the same bandwidth or results.

Who should choose the Samsung 990 EVO?
It may fit
- Someone upgrading a compatible M.2 NVMe system who wants a mainstream internal SSD in 1TB or 2TB.
- Someone whose needs are general computing and ordinary storage activity, rather than consistently heavy, large writes.
- A buyer who has confirmed the slot and finds the drive competitively priced against compatible alternatives.
Look more closely at alternatives
- If you regularly write very large files or depend on sustained throughput, compare independent sustained-write results for the exact models under consideration.
- If you want a flagship drive, compare the 990 EVO with the 990 PRO and other candidates on their own specifications and workload-relevant testing.
- If laptop battery life or thermals are central, look for measurements from a comparable host and use case; Samsung’s efficiency claim alone does not settle that question.
990 EVO vs. 990 PRO: the useful distinction
The 990 EVO is the mainstream model in this comparison, with official maximum sequential ratings of 5,000/4,200 MB/s and HMB rather than onboard DRAM. The 990 PRO is positioned higher in Samsung’s range. These facts do not by themselves prove which is the better purchase: the answer depends on actual workload, compatible interface, capacity and current local pricing. Do not substitute 990 EVO Plus specifications for either model.
