The Samsung 870 EVO is a capable 2.5-inch SATA SSD for a computer or storage device that needs that specific format. Its performance is near the practical ceiling for SATA, and independent reviewers found it particularly strong in small-file work. It is not the automatic choice for a new system with an available M.2 NVMe slot: check compatibility, compare current prices and capacity, and weigh the SATA interface against NVMe before buying.
What the Samsung 870 EVO is—and who should consider it
The 870 EVO is a 2.5-inch SSD that connects over SATA 6Gbps. It is not an M.2 drive. That makes it a relevant upgrade for desktops, laptops, or storage devices that accept a 2.5-inch SATA drive, but not a fit for a system that only supports M.2 modules. Samsung lists capacities of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB in its 870 EVO datasheet.

Before ordering, check the host device’s specifications for a 2.5-inch bay, SATA connector, and available physical space. Some laptops have only an M.2 slot, while others have a 2.5-inch bay that may require a particular thickness or a cable not included with the drive. If you plan to use it externally, you will need a compatible SATA-to-USB enclosure or adapter.

Performance: near SATA’s limit, with a cache-related caveat
Samsung’s rated speeds
Samsung rates the drive at up to 560MB/s sequential read and 530MB/s sequential write, and up to 98,000 random-read IOPS and 88,000 random-write IOPS. These are manufacturer figures from the product’s 2021 datasheet, not guaranteed results in every computer. Samsung notes that results vary with firmware, hardware, and configuration.

- THE SSD ALL-STAR: The latest 870 EVO has indisputable performance, reliability and compatibility built upon Samsung's pioneering technology.Computer Platform:PC.Encryption : Class 0 (AES 256) TCG/Opal v2.0, MS eDrive (IEEE1667), Environmental Specs - Shock : 1,500 G & 0.5 ms (Half sine).
- EXCELLENCE IN PERFORMANCE: Enjoy professional level SSD performance with 870 EVO, which maximizes the SATA interface limit to 560/530 MB/s sequential speeds, Accelerates write speeds and maintains long term high performance with a larger variable buffer
- INDUSTRY DEFINING RELIABILITY: Meet the demands of every task from everyday computing to 8K video processing, with up to 2,400 TBW
- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
Samsung’s sequential-write rating uses Intelligent TurboWrite. After the TurboWrite region, the datasheet lists sustained sequential write speeds of 300MB/s for the 250GB and 500GB models, and 530MB/s for the 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models. This distinction matters for lengthy writes: the headline maximum does not describe every stage of a large transfer.
What independent tests found
PCWorld highlighted the EVO’s small-file performance in its review, while Tom’s Hardware’s testing also placed it among the strong SATA drives. The differences among leading SATA SSDs are constrained by the interface, so a benchmark win does not necessarily translate into a noticeable advantage in everyday use.

TechRadar measured 564.07MB/s sequential read and 535.34MB/s sequential write in CrystalDiskMark on its 2021 test system. Those results are specific to that setup and benchmark. In the same publication’s testing, the Samsung 980 NVMe SSD was more than five times faster in synthetic benchmarks and three times faster in file transfers. Those comparisons apply to the tested drives and workloads, not to every NVMe model or present-day benchmark.

If your computer supports NVMe and has a usable M.2 slot, compare an NVMe SSD before choosing the 870 EVO as a system drive. NVMe can deliver much higher transfer speeds in suitable workloads, but the right choice depends on supported formats, price, capacity, and the work you actually do. A SATA drive is not a useful upgrade if it cannot connect to the device; conversely, theoretical NVMe speed is not a reason to buy a drive your system cannot use.

- Choose the 870 EVO when the device requires or benefits from a 2.5-inch SATA drive, or when you are replacing an existing SATA drive and want a compatible SSD.
- Compare M.2 NVMe options when the device supports NVMe and you want higher peak transfer performance. Compare cost and usable capacity as well as benchmark claims.
- Compare other SATA SSDs by capacity and current price, sustained writes after any cache, endurance and warranty terms, software and encryption support, and workload-specific testing.
Prices change, and PCWorld’s 2026 update noted price increases; its 2021 characterization of the EVO as pricier than competitors should not be treated as a current price comparison. Check the price for the capacity and regional model you intend to buy rather than relying on launch pricing.
Capacities, endurance, and warranty
Samsung’s 2021 ratings scale endurance with capacity. TBW means terabytes written: it is a rated total-write limit, not a prediction of the date a drive will fail.

Samsung specifies a five-year limited warranty or the TBW limit, whichever comes first. These are manufacturer terms published in 2021; check the applicable regional warranty and eligibility conditions for the specific model before purchase.
PCWorld reported that its own 4TB sample failed on August 1, 2026, after its five-year warranty period but before reaching its rated 2,400TBW. That is one reported sample event—not a population failure rate or evidence that all drives behave the same way. Keep separate backups of important files regardless of SSD endurance ratings.

Features, software, and migration
The datasheet describes TLC (3-bit MLC) V-NAND, a DRAM cache that varies by capacity, backward compatibility with SATA 3Gbps and 1.5Gbps, and AES 256-bit full-disk encryption and TCG Opal 2.0 support. These features may be useful, but encryption support alone does not establish that a particular computer or operating system will configure or manage encryption as you expect.
Samsung Magician is the manufacturer’s management software. Tom’s Hardware describes its use for SMART-based health monitoring, applicable firmware updates, secure erase, and benchmarking; it also reports that Samsung provides migration software. Back up important data before cloning or changing drives: migration software does not make the process risk-free.
Verdict: a good SATA upgrade, not a universal best buy
The 870 EVO is a strong option when you specifically need a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, with broad capacity choices, high rated SATA performance, and endurance ratings that rise with capacity. Its case is less compelling when your system supports NVMe: compare compatible drives and current prices rather than paying extra for small-file performance differences that may not matter to your workload. The useful question is not whether it is fast in the abstract, but whether your device needs SATA and whether this capacity is priced well against the alternatives available to you.
