Choose saliency cropping when you need automated candidate crops at scale, but inspect the results: an algorithm estimates visual importance, not your brand’s intended message. If desktop and mobile need different compositions, use separate art-directed crops rather than relying on one focal point.
What is the difference between saliency cropping and focal-point cropping?
A crop is the final region shown after an image is fitted into a particular container. A focal point is not that region: it is a position cue used to help keep a chosen part of the source image in view as the container crops it.

Shopify’s documentation describes focal points as horizontal and vertical percentages and explains how its Liquid image_tag can apply them as CSS object-position. WordPress’s developer handbook describes a similar mapping to background-position or object-position for normalized coordinates. First check whether the mobile crop can work with the same composition. A portrait or narrow container may cut away more of a wide source image; positioning a focal point can help retain a person or product, but cannot preserve every element of a composition in every aspect ratio.

- Set an intentional point. In Shopify, set the image’s focal point in the admin or theme editor. The point is stored as horizontal and vertical percentages; verify that the theme actually supports and uses it.
- Check the rendering rules. If the image fills a fixed-ratio container,
object-fit: coveris a common way to fill it while cropping excess image area. Confirm how the theme positions the image rather than assuming the point will appear centered. - Preview narrow and wide viewports. Test the actual hero in the production theme at the mobile and desktop ratios your storefront uses. Shopify notes that a focal point is not always visually centered after a theme crops and resizes an image.
- Switch to separate crops if the composition must change. If mobile needs a tighter subject or different balance than desktop, supply art-directed mobile and desktop assets instead of trying to solve both with a single point.
Shopify’s image guidance notes: “You can only have one focal point per image, but you can change the focal point or remove it at any time.” Because the point belongs to the image, the same point is reused wherever that image appears.
Should I use focal point or automatic cropping?
Choose based on the workflow and the consequence of a bad crop, not on an assumed performance advantage.

- Prefer a focal point when a particular subject or product must stay in frame and someone can set and review the point per image.
- Consider saliency cropping when you need to produce many candidate crops without an authored point for every image. Treat automation as a starting point and check the result against the storefront’s message.
- Use art direction when the intended composition itself differs by device. A focal point shifts positioning; it does not create a new source composition.
An audit abstract presented at WACV 2022 reports face-centric placement for the evaluated Google CROP_HINTS and Apple ABSC behavior, including non-MGL face-centric crops from Apple ABSC for the tested images. This is a bounded finding about those systems and that evaluation, not proof that all saliency algorithms fail or that every image will be cropped around a face. The WACV 2022 paper is the relevant source.

Use responsive art direction when the subject placement, crop, or composition needs to change across screen sizes. Shopify recommends using <picture> sources for different crops; if the composition stays the same and only the delivered resolution changes, responsive source selection is enough.

Give each art-directed source intrinsic width and height values so the browser can reserve the appropriate space and reduce layout shifts. Avoid building separate mobile and desktop <img> elements and hiding one with CSS: both image resources may still download.
For a leading hero image that may be the page’s largest contentful paint (LCP) element, follow the platform’s responsive loading guidance and check which source the browser requests. Shopify advises that eager images, including the LCP image, need explicit sizes information. Lazy loading is a separate case; do not lazy-load the leading hero without checking the page’s loading strategy. Details are in Shopify’s responsive design performance guidance.

What the crop choice can—and cannot—tell you
The available implementation guidance explains how to select and render crops; it does not establish an apples-to-apples quality benchmark between saliency and focal-point methods. No cited source demonstrates that either approach improves storefront conversion or sales, so treat crop choice as a way to control what shoppers see—not as a proven commercial lift.
