Salesforce uses both Software Engineer descriptions and Member of Technical Staff (MTS) title variants, including Senior Member of Technical Staff (SMTS). Its public careers materials do not establish that a generic Software Engineer title maps to SMTS or publish a universal level ladder. For a specific opening, compare the requisition’s responsibilities, qualifications, team, location, and compensation terms—not the title alone.
What Salesforce’s public titles establish
Salesforce describes software engineers as building high-performing, high-quality products with significant, measurable impact for customers and users. Its Tech & Product careers page also features employees with the titles Software Engineering MTS, Software Engineering SMTS, and Software Engineering LMTS. These examples show that the title variants are in use; they do not define a formal company-wide hierarchy or prove an exact equivalence between Software Engineer and SMTS.

The page includes an employee-reported project result of reducing deployment time from “4 hours to 10 mins,” attributed to Tanisha Garg, Software Engineering MTS, India. That is an anecdote about a project, not a benchmark for MTS or SMTS roles.
What an SMTS role may involve
Responsibilities depend on the team and opening. For example, Salesforce’s Senior Software Engineer – DevOps focus posting, published January 23, 2026, describes architecture and implementation of large-scale platforms, technical strategy, complex migrations, reliability work, mentoring, and cross-functional leadership. It is a role-specific example, not a universal SMTS definition or rubric.

How to compare two Salesforce openings
Read the actual requisitions side by side. The responsibilities and qualifications provide more useful evidence about scope than a title label by itself.
- Problem scope: How broad or ambiguous are the engineering problems?
- Ownership: Is the role responsible from design through delivery and operation?
- Technical direction: Does it set architecture or technical strategy, or primarily implement within an established direction?
- Influence: Is impact expected within one team or across multiple teams?
- Leadership: Does the description call for mentoring or other forms of technical leadership?
- Qualifications: What experience and skills does the requisition actually require?
- Terms: Which location and compensation conditions apply?
Do not infer a fixed years-of-experience threshold or a pay premium from “SMTS.” Ask the recruiter which internal level applies to the requisition and whether its displayed title represents a company level, an engineering discipline, or an external posting label.

Compensation and interviews
The cited U.S. DevOps-focused posting says compensation depends on location, job level, job-related knowledge, and experience. It does not provide directly comparable pay data for a Software Engineer title and an SMTS title. Compare the compensation terms attached to the actual openings rather than treating the labels as salary bands.
Salesforce’s general Tech & Product careers FAQ says interviews may include coding challenges, technical discussions, and real-time problem-solving. The stages can vary by role and region, so use the recruiter’s process details for the specific requisition.
