The specific features depend on which Salesforce product you use: this guide focuses on Marketing Cloud Engagement (also called SFMC or MCE), whose CloudPages, Journey Builder, and Automation Studio are distinct from tools in Marketing Cloud Next and Marketing Cloud Account Engagement.
First, identify which Marketing Cloud product you have
Salesforce uses similar names for three different product families, but their automation tools, data models, and content builders are not interchangeable. Salesforce’s product comparison distinguishes them as follows:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Product | Relevant tools and data approach | What that means for lead generation |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing Cloud Next | Flow Builder, Data Cloud segments, and Experience Builder editors | Use Next-specific documentation; do not assume Engagement features such as CloudPages or Journey Builder apply. |
| Marketing Cloud Account Engagement | Formerly Pardot, also called MCAE; Engagement Studio, lists, Lightning email and landing-page builders, and classic forms | A separate option, particularly relevant to B2B lead-management workflows. |
| Marketing Cloud Engagement | Also called SFMC or MCE; Journey Builder, Automation Studio, data extensions, Content Builder, and CloudPages | This is the product covered in the capture-and-nurture workflow below. |
If your setup or license is unclear, start with Salesforce’s help topic “Which Marketing Cloud Product Do I Have?” Product availability and features can depend on edition, add-ons, and account configuration.
How Engagement can capture and nurture prospects
1. Capture information with CloudPages
CloudPages provides Salesforce-hosted web content features in Marketing Cloud Engagement. Salesforce describes capture forms as a way to grow an audience that can then be nurtured through a journey. Its content guidance also describes built-in reports for monitoring performance. See Create Content in Marketing Cloud Engagement.

In practice, a visitor might submit a form to request a white paper or product information. The form is the beginning of the workflow, not the whole workflow: the account must be configured to put the submitted information into an appropriate audience or data source and make it available to the intended follow-up. The exact field mapping, entry source, and consent handling depend on the implementation.
2. Use lead-generation data to determine follow-up
Salesforce’s automated email use cases identify lead-generation records, interactions with educational or demand-generation content such as white papers, and subscriber profile interests as possible triggers for nurture. These signals can help determine which message is relevant and when someone should enter a follow-up sequence.
Rank #2
A basic workflow might connect a form submission to a record or audience entry, then use that entry or a later content interaction to start educational emails. The data source, audience structure, and rules that qualify someone for a message must be configured; the feature description alone does not establish that a particular form automatically maps every field or starts a journey.
3. Automate the sequence with the available tool
Journey Builder supports event-driven and multi-step communications. Salesforce describes journeys as a way to deliver responsive, individualized communication plans and advises planning the required data, content, and timing of data activities. Those considerations matter when an automated journey reads from or updates the same data used by other processes. See Create a Multi-Step Journey in Journey Builder.
Rank #3
Journey Builder is not available in every account. Salesforce’s automated-email guidance gives Marketing Cloud Engagement Professional Edition as an example of an account without Journey Builder; in that situation, email sends can be automated through Automation Studio. Verify the tools included in your edition and any applicable add-ons before designing around a specific automation route. The automated email use cases describe this distinction.
Plan CRM and Experience Cloud connections carefully
For the specific Experience Cloud integration described by Salesforce, the journey use case requires licenses for both Experience Cloud and Marketing Cloud Engagement. Salesforce also calls out Marketing Cloud Connect setup and a decision about whether the journey should use contact data or user data. These are dependencies of that integration, not blanket requirements for every CloudPages form or Engagement lead-generation workflow.
Rank #4
Unsubscribe behavior needs particular attention when connecting these systems. Salesforce warns that unsubscribe handling should remain consistent so an opted-out person is not unintentionally sent email. Define how consent and opt-out status are represented and respected across the connected data before activating sends. See Experience Cloud and Integrating with Journey Builder.

Extend the workflow only when you need custom behavior
Marketing Cloud Engagement also offers REST and SOAP APIs. Salesforce’s developer documentation lists programmatic interactions involving tracking, subscribers and lists, content, contacts, Journey Builder, mobile messaging, and campaigns. Packages can support custom applications or custom Journey Builder activities and events. These are extension options for specialized requirements; the API documentation does not suggest that custom development is necessary for basic form capture and nurture. See Get Started with Marketing Cloud Engagement APIs and Programmatic Languages.

What these features do—and do not—establish
CloudPages, data-triggered nurture, and automated journeys provide building blocks for a capture-to-follow-up process. Whether that process is appropriate depends on the product, edition, data setup, integration, and consent rules in your account. Salesforce’s cited feature and setup guidance describes capabilities; it does not establish a general lead-conversion, pipeline, or ROI uplift. Choose a workflow based on your requirements and measure its results in your own setup.
