A “safety bubble detector” is a reader-friendly name, not a formal industrial safety device class. In a robot cell, the closest precise terms are presence-sensing protective equipment and, for one common product category, a safety laser scanner. These devices monitor a configured field, area, or plane and signal the safety-related controls when someone enters it. The sensor is only one part of a safe application: the robot cell must be risk-assessed, properly integrated, and validated.
What does a safety bubble detector mean in robotics?
Think of the “bubble” as a monitored protective field, not necessarily a sphere around the robot. ISO 10218-2:2025 describes a presence-sensing device as sensitive protective equipment that creates a sensing field, area, or plane to detect a person or body part and provide a signal intended to reduce risk. A laser scanner is one way to create that monitored zone; other protective devices can detect access using different geometries and methods.

When a person crosses into the configured field, the device sends a safety-related signal to the robot cell’s control system. Depending on the design, the system may reduce robot speed, change operating limits, or initiate a safety-rated stop. What happens is determined by the complete safety application—not by the word “bubble” or by the sensor alone. ISO 10218-2:2025 covers industrial robot applications and integration, including protective devices and collaborative applications.

A safety laser scanner monitors a selected area, often across a plane near the floor or around a work zone. The installer configures protective fields to suit the cell layout and the hazards. If a person enters a field, the scanner’s safety outputs or other safety-related interface communicate the event to the cell’s safety controls.

In a speed-and-separation monitoring (SSM) application, the system uses sensing to maintain an appropriate separation between a person and a moving robot. As the person approaches, the controls may reduce robot speed or change its permitted motion; if separation cannot be maintained, the system can stop the robot. ISO describes this general approach as monitoring the distance between a person and a robot and using a protective device to detect intrusion. The precise response depends on the design and risk assessment; it is not a universal feature of every scanner or robot. See ISO’s explanation of collaborative robot safety and the Universal Robots safety FAQ for examples of external protective devices used in SSM applications.
Roberta Nelson Shea, Convenor of ISO’s Industrial Robot Safety Working Group, described ISO/TS 15066 as providing “guidelines for the design and implementation of a collaborative workspace that reduces risks to people” in ISO’s 8 March 2016 article. That is a description of the technical specification, not a guarantee that a particular sensor or robot cell is safe.

Does a collaborative robot need a safety scanner?
Not automatically. Whether a scanner is needed—and whether a scanner alone is appropriate—depends on the application’s hazards, layout, tasks, and risk assessment. A collaborative robot designation does not make every task or workcell safe by itself. The protective measures must address the actual application, including how the robot, tools, workpiece, and surrounding equipment could expose people to risk.

Therefore, selecting a scanner is not a substitute for designing, integrating, and validating the complete cell.

Which robot-safety standards are relevant?
The standards below are international ISO publications. Their publication does not by itself establish which edition has been adopted or is legally applicable in a particular country or region. Check applicable local requirements and legal duties, and consult the issuing body’s full standard for detailed compliance work.
| Standard | Scope and relationship |
|---|---|
| ISO 10218-1:2025, Edition 3 | Published in February 2025; addresses safety requirements for industrial robots considered as machines. |
| ISO 10218-2:2025 | Addresses industrial robot applications and robot cells, including integration and collaborative applications. Its 2025 material incorporates appropriate collaborative-application requirements from ISO/TS 15066. |
| ISO/TS 15066:2016, Edition 1 | Published in February 2016 as a supplement to the 2011 editions of ISO 10218-1 and ISO 10218-2. ISO says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and remains current; that does not mean the 2016 specification itself was rewritten. |
The 2025 Part 2 and the current status of ISO/TS 15066 should not be treated as interchangeable statements: the former includes collaborative-application requirements, while the latter remains a separately published technical specification. The ISO 10218-2 material cited here is a preview, not a replacement for the full standard.

What should you compare when choosing a safety scanner?
Advertised maximum range is not enough to decide whether a scanner fits a robot cell. Product specifications can vary by model, detection size, operating mode, and configuration. For example, the KEYENCE SZ-V safety laser scanner product page describes configurable zones and safeguarding uses, while its specifications list model-dependent detection sizes, protection zones, response times, interfaces, and environmental limits. Do not assume one listed maximum applies to every version or setting.
Compare the device and its integration against the actual application requirements:

- Safety rating and standards: confirm the required performance and applicable standards for the safety function and the complete system.
- Detection and geometry: check minimum detectable object size, field shape, scan plane, coverage, mounting position, and any areas the device cannot see.
- Protective-field range: verify the range for the required detection setting and the exact model, rather than relying on a headline maximum.
- Response time and separation: account for response time in the safe-distance design and validate the resulting protective arrangement.
- Controls compatibility: confirm safety outputs or communication protocol work with the robot and safety controller, and establish what response follows a detection.
- Site conditions: check environmental limits, mounting constraints, occlusion, and reflective surfaces that could affect installation or operation.
- Configuration and lifecycle: review diagnostics, reset and restart behavior, validation needs, and ongoing support. The relevant manual and model-specific instructions matter; for example, SICK’s robot area-protection instructions are specific to their applicable product and setup.
- Integration effort: consider the work required to assess, configure, connect, test, and maintain the full application—not just the scanner’s purchase price or nominal range.
What makes the complete application safe?
A scanner can detect entry into a field, but that signal only reduces risk if the application responds appropriately and reliably. The cell design must account for the robot’s motion and stopping behavior, the protective field’s placement, the safety-related control response, and how people access the work area. The system also needs suitable configuration, reset or restart behavior, diagnostics, and validation for its intended use.
For that reason, verify the installed configuration against the relevant manufacturer instructions and applicable standards, then validate the integrated application. A different robot, tool, route, workpiece, field setting, or control interface can change the safety case even when the scanner model stays the same. Neither a scanner, a collaborative-robot label, nor a single sensor on its own establishes that a workcell is safe.
