A made-for-kids setting is an audience designation on YouTube; it does not guarantee placement in the separate YouTube Kids app.
How to decide whether a video is made for kids
Base the audience setting on the video’s content and intended audience—not simply on whether it is suitable for the whole family. YouTube considers factors such as the subject, intended or actual audience, child actors, characters or toys that appeal to children, language, activities, songs, stories, and other evidence.

Animation, a family appearance, or a child-adjacent topic does not automatically make a video child-directed. YouTube’s guidance says, “Just because your content may include some of these factors does not automatically mean it’s made for kids.” Review each video’s purpose and likely audience rather than applying one assumption to every upload.
YouTube’s guidance discusses COPPA and other applicable laws, but YouTube does not provide legal advice. Its platform guidance is not a complete legal test for every jurisdiction. If the classification has legal consequences for your channel, consult qualified counsel or the relevant regulator.

Set the audience in YouTube Studio
YouTube requires creators to identify whether content is made for kids, even if they do not make children’s content. You can set the audience for a channel or handle videos individually in YouTube Studio. A channel-level choice applies to current and future content; video-level settings require you to classify each video.
- Choose the level that matches your publishing: use a channel-level setting if the same audience classification applies across your channel, or classify videos individually when their audiences differ.
- Make the selection in YouTube Studio: open the audience setting for the channel or the individual video and select the accurate made-for-kids status.
- Revisit individual uploads when needed: if a channel has mixed content, do not assume the channel’s general identity settles the audience for every video.
Creators remain responsible for their selections. Do not choose made-for-kids merely because it seems safer, more family-friendly, or likely to improve distribution; the choice should reflect the content and audience.

What changes when content is made for kids
YouTube limits data use on made-for-kids content and disables a range of features. Plan publishing, audience communication, and monetization around those restrictions rather than assuming a standard video or live-stream feature will be available.
- Comments and live chat are unavailable.
- Personalized ads are not served on the content; YouTube says this may reduce revenue for some creators but does not give a general revenue estimate.
- Notifications, cards, end screens, and other interaction or monetization features are also limited.
For a live broadcast designated made for kids, do not plan to communicate with viewers through live chat. The audience setting affects both the viewer experience and the tools available to the channel.

Made for kids on YouTube is not the same as inclusion in YouTube Kids
YouTube Kids is a separate, filtered experience with its own content policies and age-oriented settings. Its listed settings are Preschool (ages 4 and under), Younger (ages 5–8), and Older (ages 9–12). Those settings affect eligible search and recommended content.
| Viewing context | Audience and features | Eligibility and limits |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube video designated made for kids | The creator sets the audience. Comments, live chat, personalized ads, and several other features are limited or unavailable. | The designation alone does not establish placement in the YouTube Kids app. |
| YouTube Kids app | A separate filtered experience with Preschool, Younger, and Older settings. | Inclusion uses a mix of automated filters, user feedback, and human review; not all videos are manually reviewed. |
YouTube says automated systems and human reviewers help identify suitable material, but a made-for-kids designation does not guarantee that a video will appear in the app. Do not promise parents or viewers YouTube Kids placement based solely on your audience setting.

Make children’s and family content useful and age-appropriate
YouTube’s children’s and family content principles favor age-appropriate videos that support positive behavior, care, learning, curiosity, creativity, play, and imagination. These principles supplement YouTube’s Community Guidelines and apply to long-form videos and Shorts.

Build a coherent viewing experience
- Use a storyline, explanation, or activity that children can follow; confusing presentation and unclear audio are identified as low-quality patterns.
- Represent educational content honestly. Do not frame a video as instructive if it is deceptive or does not deliver what its presentation promises.
- Use titles, thumbnails, and descriptions that accurately reflect the video. Sensational or misleading metadata and keyword stuffing are among the patterns YouTube identifies as low quality.
- Avoid encouraging dangerous behavior and use children’s characters in an appropriate, non-misleading way.
YouTube says these quality principles can affect recommendations, YouTube Kids inclusion, and monetization. It also says a channel strongly focused on low-quality made-for-kids content may be suspended from the YouTube Partner Programme, while an individual video may receive limited or no ads. These are policy consequences, not a prediction about any particular channel.

Keep promotions out of videos intended for YouTube Kids
YouTube Kids excludes creator-uploaded branded content and endorsements, as well as overly commercial videos. Its examples include traditional advertisements uploaded by creators or brands, direct appeals to buy, videos focused on product packaging, and excessive accumulation or consumption.
Do not insert a product pitch, affiliate call to action, or branded endorsement into a video intended for YouTube Kids. If you are considering a commercial recommendation in an adult-facing context, check the current platform rules and the video’s precise audience designation first. This guidance does not establish that any particular affiliate placement or program is permitted.
Keep a practical pre-publish checklist
- Have you classified the video’s audience based on its content and intended audience, rather than a general family-friendly label?
- Does the YouTube Studio setting match that assessment, including for an individual upload on a mixed-audience channel?
- Have you planned around unavailable features, especially comments and live chat for made-for-kids content?
- Are the story, audio, educational framing, title, thumbnail, and metadata clear and honest?
- Does the video avoid dangerous behavior, misleading presentation, and overly commercial content?
- Have you avoided promising that a made-for-kids label guarantees inclusion in YouTube Kids?
Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube; it does not determine whether content is made for kids, make a video eligible for YouTube Kids, or replace your responsibility to set the audience accurately. Because made-for-kids live streams do not have live chat, a continuous broadcast should not be planned around chat-based interaction.
