There is no documented Safari setting that universally restores a missing webpage background in a Full Page screenshot. First identify whether you captured on iPhone or iPad, or saved or printed a page on Mac: those are different workflows, and the right troubleshooting path depends on which one produced the file.
First, identify what you captured
A screenshot, a PDF made through printing, a saved image, and a saved webpage are not interchangeable. Before changing settings, note the device, operating system, output format, and exact action used.

- iPhone or iPad: Apple documents a Full Page screenshot workflow for capturing content beyond the display, including an entire Safari webpage, with an option to save as an image or PDF. Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions do not identify a setting to restore missing page backgrounds.
- Mac: Safari’s webpage-saving commands are separate from screenshot capture. Apple documents saving a webpage as a Web Archive or Page Source; neither is a screenshot. Apple’s Safari for Mac guide also notes that some background images cannot be saved with the Save Image command.
- Print or PDF: This is a print/export path, which can behave differently from a screenshot. Do not assume a print setting controls Safari’s built-in screenshot feature.
Check whether the background is missing on the live page
Open the same page in Safari and compare it with the saved result. If the background is absent in the live page too, investigate the page’s appearance and whether its content has loaded. If it appears on screen but is missing only in a print or PDF output, focus on that export path. This comparison helps narrow the problem; by itself, it does not establish the cause.

iPhone or iPad Full Page screenshot
- Take a screenshot while viewing the webpage, then select Full Page in the screenshot interface.
- Choose whether to save the result as an image or PDF, as supported by Apple’s instructions.
- Compare the saved result with the page on screen. Apple’s documented workflow explains how to capture and save the page, but does not promise that every site background style will be preserved or provide a universal fix for a missing background.
Mac: saved webpage or image
- Choose Web Archive when you want Safari to save a webpage copy with its graphics and links.
- Choose Page Source when you want the HTML source; it is not a visual screenshot.
- If you used the context-menu Save Image action, remember that Apple says some background images cannot be saved that way. Use an actual screenshot workflow if your goal is an image of the rendered page.
Mac: print or save as PDF
If the background appears in Safari but not in a printout or PDF, treat it as a print/export issue. A WebKit preference called shouldPrintBackgrounds is documented for whether a WKWebView includes backgrounds when printing. It is not documented as a switch for Safari’s built-in full-page screenshot. See Apple’s shouldPrintBackgrounds documentation and WebKit’s Safari 16.4 feature notes. This preference is relevant only if the output comes from printing in an app that embeds a web view, not as a general Safari screenshot fix.

For developers: inspect the page and isolate the workflow
If you are debugging your own site, first reproduce the issue with the same URL, device, and capture action. Check whether the background is part of the rendered page or a print-specific output, and whether the page finishes loading before capture. For a Mac app embedding web content, WebKit’s WKWebView printing preference may be relevant; it does not establish how Safari’s own screenshot capture works.
WebKit documents how to enable Web Inspector in Safari for inspection and debugging: Enabling Web Inspector. Use it to investigate the page itself rather than presuming a specific CSS rule or transparency behavior is responsible.

Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Changing a print preference to fix a screenshot: Confirm that the missing background comes from a print operation in an embedded web view before considering
shouldPrintBackgrounds. - Using Save Image for a CSS background: Apple notes that some background images cannot be saved with this command. Capture the rendered page instead if you need a visual record.
- Confusing Page Source with a visual copy: Page Source saves HTML, not a screenshot. Select Web Archive for a saved webpage copy or use a screenshot workflow for an image.
- Assuming one fix applies to every device and output: Record the platform, output type, and whether the page looks correct onscreen; those details determine which branch to investigate.
