Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA saddle-stitched booklet needs a page count divisible by four because each folded sheet makes four pages in the finished booklet: two on the front and two on the back. If your document does not fill a complete four-page unit, blank pages must complete it. Keep the PDF in normal reading order unless your printer asks for a different file; imposition rearranges those pages into printer spreads for production.
Why must the page count be a multiple of 4?
The requirement follows from how saddle stitching is made. A sheet is printed on both sides and folded down the middle. Each side holds two page areas, so the folded sheet becomes four consecutive pages in the booklet. Sheets are nested inside one another and stapled along the fold.

That physical unit is why a saddle-stitched booklet needs a total of 4, 8, 12, 16 pages, and so on. Adobe states that a 2-up Saddle Stitch document in InDesign must have a page count divisible by four; InDesign adds blanks to complete the final signature. The University of Dundee Print Unit gives the same requirement for its saddle-stitch service.
What happens if the PDF page count is not divisible by four?
The job needs blank pages to fill the incomplete four-page unit. For example, a 10-page document needs two additional pages to reach 12. Those pages may be intentionally blank, but their placement depends on the layout and imposition workflow. Check the imposed preview to make sure the blanks appear where intended, and confirm the printer’s file requirements.

- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
Do not add blanks by rearranging pages into facing spreads unless your printer specifically requests that. Normally, you supply single pages in reading order and let the imposition software arrange them for printing.
Reading order versus printer spreads
A source PDF’s reading order is the sequence a reader sees: page 1, page 2, page 3, and so on. Printer spreads look out of sequence because their pages must land in the right positions after sheets are printed, folded, nested, and stapled. Imposition creates those spreads; it does not change the booklet’s intended reading sequence.

Adobe describes InDesign booklet imposition as creating printer spreads that determine how pages print, fold, and bind. Dundee’s Print Unit likewise asks for a PDF made of single pages in reading order. Unless you receive different instructions, provide a single-page PDF rather than imposing spreads yourself.
How to impose a PDF for saddle stitch
Print a booklet with Acrobat or Reader
- Open the PDF in Acrobat or Reader and choose Print.
- In the page-sizing and handling options, select Booklet. Acrobat arranges pages for booklet printing.
- Choose automatic two-sided printing if your printer supports duplex printing.
- If duplex printing is unavailable, print the front sides and then the back sides as separate passes. Reload the sheets in the correct orientation for your printer.
- Print a test copy and check page order, orientation, and the direction in which the sheets must be reloaded before printing the full job.
Adobe’s Acrobat guidance describes booklet printing as arranging two pages per sheet. Whether both sides print automatically depends on the printer; check its manual or configuration before choosing a duplex workflow.

Create printer spreads with InDesign
- Keep the InDesign document pages in normal reading order.
- Choose File > Print Booklet.
- Select the 2-up Saddle Stitch booklet type.
- Review the imposed preview and confirm how any blank pages are handled. Adobe notes that intentionally blank pages may need content or the Print Blank Pages option so they are retained as intended.
- Print directly or save the imposition as a PDF, then check that the output matches the printer’s requirements.
Adobe’s current InDesign instructions specify a single page size for this booklet workflow. A commercial printer may prefer to impose the reading-order PDF in its own prepress system, so ask before sending printer spreads.
What else matters in production?
Duplex printing and sheet orientation
Automatic duplex prints both sides in one workflow. Manual duplex requires separate passes and careful sheet reloading; the correct orientation varies by printer. A test print is the practical way to verify that the back side is neither upside down nor paired with the wrong front.

Creep in nested sheets
As more sheets are nested and folded, the inner pages can extend farther out at the fore-edge than the outer pages. This is called creep. InDesign includes a creep setting to compensate for paper thickness and folding, but the right adjustment depends on the stock and job. Follow the printer’s guidance rather than applying a universal value.

Bleed and margin specifications vary by printer. Dundee’s Print Unit, for example, requests 3–5 mm of bleed and a 10 mm margin for its work; those are that provider’s specifications, not universal requirements. Dundee also lists a saddle-stitch range of 8 to 100 pages depending on stock. Confirm the limits and file setup with the printer producing your booklet.

Saddle stitch versus perfect binding
Saddle stitch folds sheets and staples them through the spine, so its page count must fill four-page sheet units. Perfect binding glues pages to a cover and follows different production rules. Dundee’s guidance says its perfect-bound jobs require a page count divisible by two, with provider-specific limits. Do not apply that service’s rule—or its saddle-stitch limits—to another printer without checking.
