To enable what most people call GPS, turn on the device’s Location or Location Services setting, then grant location permission to the app that needs it. Those are separate controls. A device may estimate location using GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth, or sensors, so a computer can offer location-aware features without a satellite GPS receiver.
Turn on location on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Turn on Location Services.
- Scroll to the app and choose the access option you want. When an app first requests location, iOS or iPadOS asks for permission; you can change that choice later in Location Services.
Apple says GPS and mobile location are available on iPhone and Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can also help determine location, so do not assume every iPad has satellite GPS. See Apple’s Location Services settings guide.

Turn on location on Android
- Open Settings > Location and turn on device location. Menu wording can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Open the target app’s app-info or permissions settings and allow location access.
- On Android 12 and later, review whether the app is allowed precise location or only approximate location; precise access is a separate control.
When available, Google Location Accuracy can combine Wi-Fi access points, cellular towers, GPS, and device sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. It can help estimate location when satellite signals are obscured; disabling it may limit the availability or accuracy of some apps and services. See Google’s Android location settings guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTurn on location in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- If you administer the computer, turn on Location services for the device.
- Turn on Let apps access your location for the user, then review app-specific access where available.
A work or school administrator may control these options. Windows can estimate location using GPS, nearby wireless access points, cell towers, or an IP address. If it cannot find a more exact position, go to Default location > Set default and specify the computer’s location. This is a fallback used by Windows and apps that use it, not a GPS fix. See Microsoft’s Windows Location service and privacy guide.

What to check when an app cannot find your location
- Check both controls: make sure device location is on and the specific app has permission.
- Check precision: if the app needs an exact position, review its precise-location setting where available. Android 12 and later let you manage precise location separately from approximate access.
- Consider signal conditions: walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, and terrain can obstruct GPS. Move to a place with a clearer view in several directions; a phone may rely on Wi-Fi or cellular location until satellites are visible.
- Allow time for a GPS fix: check the date, time, and time zone. Apple notes that finding visible satellites can take several minutes and accuracy may improve over time. See Apple’s GPS accuracy guidance.
Choose location access with privacy in mind
Grant an app only the location access its feature needs, and revisit its permission when that need changes. Apple says apps must ask before using Location Services, and you can change access later under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. For current Mac instructions, use Apple Support and select the documentation for your macOS version; the settings path can depend on the installed version.
