A spinner or progress bar tells users that work is underway; it does not tell them the outcome. When a task ends, replace the activity signal with a clear success, failure, or recovery message. Choose determinate progress only when advancement can be measured, and expose status changes to assistive technology without moving focus.
Choose a progress indicator that matches the work
Start with what the interface can truthfully say about the task, not with the animation you want to show. Apple’s progress indicator guidance distinguishes measurable progress from work whose duration or advancement cannot be quantified.

- Use determinate progress when the task has meaningful, measurable advancement, such as an upload with a known amount of data. Keep the displayed value aligned with actual work. Avoid a bar that races to near completion and then lingers: Apple warns that showing 90 percent in five seconds and the final 10 percent in five minutes can feel deceptive.
- Use indeterminate progress when you cannot estimate duration or measure advancement. It signals activity without promising a percentage or time estimate. If progress becomes measurable later, switch to a determinate indicator.
Give the status a concise, specific label when possible—“Exporting report” tells users more than “Loading.” If work stalls, explain what happened and offer a useful next action rather than leaving the indicator to imply that everything is proceeding normally.

Make completion a distinct state
Apple describes progress indicators as transient: they appear while an operation is ongoing and disappear after it completes. Remove the indicator at that boundary and make the result visible. For example, confirm that changes were saved, the report was exported, or the import finished. The task’s outcome should be clear even to someone who did not watch the indicator.

If the operation fails, say that it did not finish and provide a relevant recovery route, such as retrying or correcting an input. W3C’s definition of status messages includes information about waiting, progress, success or results, and errors; its separate cognitive accessibility feedback pattern recommends clear success or failure feedback for user actions. That pattern is supplemental design guidance, not an additional WCAG conformance requirement.
Give users control when waiting takes time
For a short save, a brief status followed by confirmation may be enough. Longer work needs a continuing status signal, and background work may need a way to see its state without keeping the user on the same screen. Microsoft notes that text can communicate the status of tasks that do not need to remain visible all the time in its Windows progress-control guidance.
Choose interruption controls based on their consequences. Let users cancel when stopping is safe. If cancellation could discard useful partial work, consider whether pausing is a better option. Tell users when the task is stalled and what they can do; do not fabricate an estimate to make an uncertain wait appear precise.

Show progress through multi-step workflows
When a process has distinct stages, show which steps are complete, which one is current, and what remains. Include choices or prerequisites that affect what happens next. This gives a person who has been distracted a way to reorient and resume without guessing how far the process has advanced. W3C’s Make Each Step Clear pattern is supplemental cognitive accessibility guidance, not a separate WCAG requirement.

WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 4.1.3 requires that status messages in markup be programmatically determinable through roles or properties so assistive technologies can present them without receiving focus. The criterion covers messages about waiting, process progress, results, and errors when they are communicated without a change of context. See the WCAG 2.1 standard and W3C’s Understanding Success Criterion 4.1.3.
Use a status role for ordinary updates
W3C’s informative ARIA22 technique demonstrates role="status" for status messages. The role has an implicit polite live setting and an atomic default. Because some environments may not treat the contents as atomic, add aria-atomic="true" when the complete message should be announced together.

Announce progress text separately from the bar
A visual progress bar can expose its current value, but changing aria-valuenow on an element with role="progressbar" does not, by itself, make that element a live region. W3C’s informative ARIA25 technique demonstrates pairing a progress bar with a separate live region containing progress text when spoken updates are needed. Keep announcements useful and restrained; the technique does not set a universal update frequency.
Do not move focus to announce routine progress. Reserve assertive alerts for genuinely urgent information: W3C identifies using assertive alerts for non-urgent content as a common failure pattern in its status-message guidance.
Quick Recap
A practical decision sequence
- Can you measure advancement? Use a determinate indicator only if its value reflects real progress; otherwise use an indeterminate one.
- How long will the task occupy the user? Use concise feedback for quick actions, and continuing or background-visible status for longer work.
- Can the user safely interrupt it? Offer cancellation when stopping is safe; consider pause when it protects useful partial work.
- What happened at the end? Remove the activity indicator and communicate success, failure, or a stalled state with an actionable next step.
- Can assistive technology receive the update without focus movement? Expose the message programmatically and, where needed, provide progress text through a live region separate from the bar.
