RX 570 Power Limit and Undervolting: How to Reduce Power Draw Safely

RX 570 undervolt and Power Limit settings vary by card. Learn a cautious test process, what AMD’s published power figures mean, and how to measure draw.

There is no single undervolt voltage or Power Limit percentage that is stable on every RX 570. Start with your card’s stock settings, lower voltage gradually while keeping clocks unchanged, and test in the games or applications you actually use. A lower Power Limit is another option, but it can reduce sustained clock speeds and performance.

What settings can you change on an RX 570?

AMD’s Radeon WattMan documentation describes controls for GPU frequency and voltage, fan and temperature settings, Power Limit, and performance monitoring. The controls available depend on the GPU and driver, so use the options actually shown for your card. AMD’s documented Frequency/Voltage curve feature applies to Radeon VII and RX 5700 series, not the RX 570; do not expect that interface or the newer Auto Undervolt control on every RX 570 setup. AMD’s WattMan guide describes the supported controls and their limitations.

On cards using traditional performance-state controls, WattMan allows voltage changes across configurable GPU states. AMD describes seven configurable clock states: State 7 is the highest-performance state, while State 0 is the lowest-power state and cannot be modified. AMD’s example of 1150 mV for State 7 refers to a sample GPU; it is not an RX 570 preset or a target voltage.

Undervolt gradually at stock clocks

  1. Record your baseline. Note the current settings and observe the same game or application workload at stock. Record the software readings available to you, such as GPU power, clock, temperature, and fan speed, along with performance.
  2. Change voltage only. Keep GPU and memory clocks at stock initially. If your RX 570’s driver exposes voltage controls, make a modest reduction rather than applying an online preset or changing several settings at once.
  3. Test your real workloads. Run the games or applications you rely on and watch for crashes, driver resets, visual artifacts, or unexpected clock drops. A brief synthetic run alone cannot establish stability for every workload.
  4. Adjust in small steps. If the card remains stable, try another small reduction and repeat testing. If problems appear, return to the last stable setting or reset to defaults.

AMD cautions that “GPU tuning requires an advanced level of technical knowledge.” Its guidance favors default GPU and memory settings for most applications, so treat tuning as an optional, incremental experiment rather than a guaranteed improvement. AMD’s WattMan documentation does not publish a universal RX 570 undervolt or a measured saving for a particular voltage change.

How to lower the Power Limit

Power Limit is a percentage control for the level of power sent to the GPU; the range depends on the specific GPU. For a power-reduction experiment, start at the default and lower the limit in small increments. Compare the same workload after each change, checking both power readings and performance. A tighter limit may constrain sustained frequency, so a lower reading can come with lower frame rates or slower application performance.

AMD notes that increasing Power Limit can help a GPU maintain its highest clock state and recommends setting it to maximum when increasing clocks. That overclocking advice is not a recommendation to raise the limit when your goal is lower power draw. AMD does not specify one RX 570-wide percentage setting for reducing consumption. See AMD’s explanation of Power Limit.

RX 570 power specifications are not tuning results

Published power figures differ by what they describe and which card is listed. AMD’s current desktop RX 570 specification gives a typical board power of 150 W and recommends a 450 W minimum system power supply. The PSU figure is a system recommendation, not the graphics card’s own draw. Neither number predicts how much a particular undervolt or Power Limit change will save. AMD’s RX 570 specifications provide those product figures.

Measure the right kind of power

WattMan’s histogram can track GPU temperature, power, fan speed, and clock speed, which is useful for comparing readings under a repeated workload. Those software readings concern GPU telemetry; they are not the same as total PC consumption at the wall. A plug-in wall meter measures the whole connected system, including the rest of the PC and any other device sharing the meter. For a fair before-and-after comparison, use the same system and workload each time. The distinction between software telemetry and wall-meter readings is also discussed anecdotally in this RX 570 user discussion; it is not a standards document or controlled measurement.

Compare the trade-offs, not just the power reading

Evaluate a stock profile, a modest undervolt at stock clocks, or a reduced Power Limit using the same workload. Consider the measured power reading and its scope alongside sustained clock speed, frame rate or task performance, temperature and fan behavior, and stability. The best setting is the one that meets your own stability and performance needs; the available official specifications do not establish a universal power-saving percentage for RX 570 tuning.
