A battery can help by storing energy for later use, but it is only one component: a battery alone is not a community microgrid, and no single runtime applies to every site.
What a microgrid does during a grid disruption
The U.S. Department of Energy defines a microgrid as interconnected electricity loads and local energy resources operating within clearly defined electrical boundaries. It can work while connected to the main grid or operate separately in island mode. That boundary matters: it identifies which generators, storage, controls and loads can be managed together when the larger network is unavailable. DOE’s overview of microgrid systems explains these core capabilities.

In normal conditions, a microgrid can exchange electricity with the main grid. If the main grid fails, equipment and controls must separate the local system from it and manage supply and demand within the microgrid. The controller coordinates available resources and electricity delivery; operators or automated controls may prioritize critical loads rather than trying to serve every building or appliance. Islanding is therefore a designed operating mode, not something guaranteed simply by having local generation or a battery.

How batteries and solar contribute
Solar supplies power when conditions allow
Local solar photovoltaic panels can produce electricity near the loads they serve. Their output varies with sunlight and operating conditions, so solar does not by itself ensure continuous supply through every hour or weather event. DOE describes solar as one resource that can support resilient distribution systems, including systems intended to operate autonomously. DOE’s material on solar-powered resilient distribution systems discusses this approach.

Batteries shift energy across time
A battery can charge when electricity is available and discharge later, helping balance local generation and demand. In a microgrid, it can be coordinated with solar, other generation and selected loads. How long it can support those loads depends on the system’s storage, the electricity being produced, operating conditions and what the community chooses to keep powered. DOE’s solar and resilience guidance discusses the role of solar and storage, but does not establish one battery duration that applies to remote communities.
That is why “How many hours will the battery last?” has no useful universal answer without a specific design and load profile. A system intended to keep a communications link and emergency facility available has a different task from one expected to supply an entire community. A consumer backup battery may be appropriate for a small site or individual essential loads, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a microgrid designed to coordinate community-scale resources.

Why remote communities need site-specific planning
Remote and island communities can face added vulnerability when they depend on a single power source or interconnected systems. NREL’s 2023 account of its Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project describes planning support tailored to local needs rather than a standard design for every community. Its examples illustrate different challenges, not typical outage statistics or proof that proposed projects were completed. NREL’s 2023 announcement reports:
- Stonington, Maine: Outages were reported to last up to a week.
- Nooksack Tribe, Washington: Winter outages were reported to require emergency shelters.
- Molokai, Hawaii: Planning considered solar for critical infrastructure and pumped hydropower as storage.
These examples show why the right mix of technologies depends on local conditions. They do not establish a typical outage length, the performance of a completed microgrid, or a cost comparison among options.

Questions to answer before choosing a system
A practical resilience plan starts with the service the community needs to preserve, then tests whether local resources and controls can support it under realistic conditions. Key questions include:
- Which loads are critical? Identify the facilities and equipment that must remain available, and distinguish them from loads that can be curtailed during an outage.
- What local resources are usable? Assess available generation and storage, including solar, batteries, existing generators or other site-appropriate resources.
- How long must critical service continue? Set an outage-planning target and examine how changing demand, generation availability and storage affect it; do not assume a battery capacity alone establishes runtime.
- Can the system connect and island as intended? Define the electrical boundary and ensure the design and controls can transition between grid-connected and islanded operation while coordinating power delivery.
- What local conditions could change the design? Consider weather, demand growth and the condition and configuration of the existing grid.
- Would coordination among microgrids help? Determine whether one local system is appropriate or whether linking controls across multiple microgrids better serves the community.
NREL’s program used tailored energy-resilience assessment and planning. The available examples do not provide comparable project costs, runtimes or technology rankings, so those decisions require analysis for the particular site.

When multiple microgrids coordinate
Microgrids do not always have to be planned as isolated systems. In a November 8, 2023 account, DOE described a tool intended to coordinate multiple solar-plus-storage microgrids. DOE says this approach can help maintain reliable service and integrate more solar and potentially other renewable resources. It may also reduce reliance on diesel generators, costs and harmful emissions, but those are potential benefits—not results guaranteed or independently measured for every deployment. DOE’s account of the multi-microgrid tool describes the effort.
What a microgrid cannot promise by itself
Resilience depends on the system configuration, available generation, storage, controls and the loads selected for service. The cited federal sources do not establish a representative remote-community battery runtime, project cost or quantified improvement in outage performance. A system can only serve the loads and duration its design and resources support; the word “microgrid” alone is not a guarantee that every customer will have uninterrupted power.
