Neither hotels nor campgrounds are the right choice for every RV trip. Choose a campground when its specific site fits your vehicle and you want a camping stay; choose a hotel when you want a conventional room and the property confirms it can accommodate your RV or tow vehicle. Before booking, check vehicle access, amenities, reservation rules, and the total cost for your exact itinerary.
Start with the vehicle and the route
A campground that accepts RVs may still be a poor fit for a particular rig. Site length, pull-through versus back-in layout, and room for slide-outs can differ even within the same park. The National Park Service advises visitors to check the park’s size restrictions and how many sites can accommodate RVs and towed campers. NPS: Finding and Setting Up a Campsite.

Also check the route and places you plan to visit. A suitable campsite does not guarantee that nearby roads, trailheads, or attraction parking can handle your vehicle. At New River Gorge, for example, the NPS warns that some locations have limited RV parking, many trailheads lack space for medium or large RVs, and some roads are unsuitable for larger vehicles. NPS: Tips for RVs — New River Gorge National Park & Preserve.
What a campground stay can provide
Campgrounds are designed for an outdoor stay, but facilities vary by site. NPS lists examples including a parking space, picnic table, fire ring, potable water, restrooms, and, at some campgrounds, showers, RV electrical hookups, or a dump station. Primitive sites may have only vault toilets, non-potable water, or no water. Check the specific campground listing for what is actually available. NPS: Frontcountry Camping.

Private operators may offer additional site types and services. KOA, for example, describes pull-through and back-in sites, 30- or 50-amp service, electric and sewer hookups, laundry, and location-dependent extras. These are options across its network, not a guarantee that every location has every feature; verify the individual campground. KOA: RV Camping.
What a hotel stay changes
A hotel gives you a conventional room rather than a campsite, which may better suit travelers who do not want to stay in a camping environment. But do not assume the hotel can accommodate an RV, motorhome, or towable simply because it has a parking lot. There is no universal parking rule established here: ask the specific property whether your vehicle and trailer combination can park overnight, whether the space works for its dimensions, and whether restrictions or charges apply.

Compare availability and the real trip cost
Reservation systems and arrival rules vary. Some NPS campsites are reservable and others are first-come, first-served; requirements depend on the campground, and popular frontcountry sites may require planning months ahead. New River Gorge’s primitive sites, for example, are first-come, first-served, and the NPS recommends having a backup plan if they fill. Confirm current rules and availability for your dates rather than relying on a general expectation.

Use this booking checklist
- Measure the vehicle and combination. Note the RV’s length and any tow vehicle or trailer dimensions; account for slide-outs and the space needed to maneuver.
- Confirm the campsite or property directly. For a campground, verify site dimensions, layout, hookups, water, restrooms, showers, and dump access. For a hotel, confirm overnight parking permission, vehicle and trailer fit, and any charges.
- Check the whole itinerary. Look up destination road, trailhead, and parking restrictions separately from the lodging rules.
- Verify dates and arrival rules. Check whether a reservation is required, whether the site is first-come, first-served, and what backup options make sense if it is unavailable.
- Compare the full quote. Use the same dates and party size, and include applicable fees and trip-specific RV expenses before deciding.
Which option fits your trip?
- Choose a campground if you want an outdoor stay and have verified that the actual site, facilities, and route work for your RV.
- Choose a hotel if you prefer a room and the property has explicitly confirmed suitable parking for your RV or vehicle-and-trailer combination.
- Rework the plan if neither lodging option can accommodate the vehicle or the destination access is unsuitable; consider where the RV can be left legally and safely, then confirm how you will reach the places you want to visit.
