Rust Server on Linux vs Windows: Which Should You Choose?

Linux favors SSH automation and headless hosting; Windows favors GUI administration and client parity. Here is how support, hardware, maintenance, and security affect the choice.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Linux if you want a headless, scriptable server managed over SSH and you are comfortable maintaining packages, libraries, and firewall rules. Choose Windows if you prefer graphical administration, Windows-native tools, or the closest match to Rust’s officially listed client environment. Facepunch supports dedicated servers on both operating systems, so there is no documented universal speed winner. The practical choice is the administration model you can operate reliably, the lifecycle of your chosen platform, and the security controls you will actually maintain.

Linux vs. Windows at a glance

Decision factor Linux Windows
Official dedicated-server support Yes; Facepunch documents Linux servers. Yes; Facepunch documents Windows servers.
Installation path SteamCMD, steamcmd.sh, shell startup scripts, screen, and RCON. SteamCMD, RustDedicated.exe, and a batch file.
Administration Best suited to SSH, automation, scheduled jobs, and headless hosting. Best suited to graphical administration and Windows-native desktop tools.
Maintenance exposure You must track distribution, GLIBC and other library compatibility, and package support. Windows patching and desktop tooling are familiar to many administrators; server licensing can affect cost.
Client parity The Rust client is not natively supported on Linux. Rust is officially listed for Windows 11 64-bit.
Documented server hardware baseline 12 GB free RAM and 15 GB free disk space; SSD or NVMe is highly preferred. 12 GB free RAM and 15 GB free disk space; SSD or NVMe is highly preferred.
Official cross-platform benchmark No current, controlled Windows-versus-Linux benchmark was published in the cited official material.

The table describes operating choices, not guaranteed performance. A well-maintained machine, a suitable CPU, fast storage, stable networking, and sensible world settings matter more than assuming one kernel is automatically faster.

What “support” means for a Rust server

Facepunch’s server guide states that the system can be based on Windows, Linux, or OSX. That is server support: the dedicated process can run on each of those platforms. It is separate from the player client. Rust’s client installation information currently lists Windows and macOS, not native Linux support.

This distinction matters when you plan a single machine for both playing and hosting. A Windows PC can run the client and a dedicated server using the same general operating-system family. A Linux host is a strong choice for a remote, always-on machine, but you should not assume that the normal Rust desktop client will run natively there. You can administer the server from another computer, and players can connect from supported client platforms, but the host operating system and the player’s operating system are different decisions.

Hardware and capacity planning

Facepunch’s current Rust server guide lists 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space as baseline requirements. The guide adds that a 6k map uses more memory and that SSD or NVMe storage is highly preferred. These figures are planning baselines, not a promise of a particular tick rate, player count, boot time, or frame rate.

What the baseline does and does not cover

  • Memory: 12 GB free is the published starting point. Larger procedural worlds, more entities, plugins, and higher concurrent populations can raise memory pressure.
  • Storage: 15 GB free covers the guide’s stated baseline, but you also need room for updates, logs, backups, map saves, and temporary files. Treat it as free space, not the total capacity of the drive.
  • Drive type: SSD or NVMe is highly preferred. Faster random I/O helps world loading, saves, updates, and recovery after a restart.
  • CPU: The supplied official figures do not establish a minimum model or a Windows-versus-Linux CPU advantage. Leave headroom for simulation, networking, plugins, monitoring, and the operating system.
  • Network: Player count and upload demand depend on your world and configuration. A reliable upstream connection and DDoS protection are more important than an advertised link speed alone.

Planning for a larger world

The guide specifically warns that a 6k map uses more than the baseline memory. If you increase map size or population, do not wait for the server to start swapping before upgrading. Monitor available RAM, CPU saturation, disk latency, and save times during a test period. Keep enough free disk space for a second copy of the current save and for the next game update.

Running the server on Linux

Why administrators choose Linux

  • SSH access lets you run a server without a desktop session or monitor.
  • Shell scripts make repeatable updates, restarts, backups, and health checks straightforward.
  • screen, service managers, log tools, and RCON fit a headless workflow.
  • Minimal installations reduce the number of desktop components that need patching.
  • Linux is a natural fit for dedicated or bare-metal hosting where several services are managed remotely.

Linux installation path

  1. Install a supported Linux distribution and apply its security updates before exposing the host to the internet.
  2. Download and extract the Linux SteamCMD package, identified in Facepunch’s instructions as steamcmd_linux.tar.gz.
  3. Start SteamCMD with ./steamcmd.sh, sign in as required by SteamCMD, and install or update Rust’s dedicated-server application using App ID 258550.
  4. Create a startup shell script that launches the dedicated server with your chosen world, identity, networking, and RCON settings. Keep the script outside the downloaded binaries so an update does not overwrite your configuration.
  5. Make the startup script executable, then run it inside screen or an equivalent service manager so the process continues after you disconnect from SSH.
  6. Use RCON for administration rather than relying on an interactive terminal. Facepunch notes that the Linux console is not interactive in the same way as the Windows console.
  7. Test a stop, start, update, restore, and reboot before inviting players. Record where saves, logs, configuration files, and backups are stored.

Linux administration trade-offs

Linux is efficient when your routine is command-line work, but it makes the operator responsible for more of the platform. You need to understand users and permissions, firewall rules, package updates, service supervision, disk usage, and library compatibility. A headless server is not automatically safer: a forgotten SSH key, an over-permissive service account, or an exposed RCON port can undermine the whole design.

Running the server on Windows

Why administrators choose Windows

  • Graphical remote administration can be easier for operators who are less comfortable with SSH and shell tools.
  • Windows-native monitoring, file management, scheduled tasks, and remote-desktop workflows are familiar to many gaming communities.
  • The Rust client is officially listed for Windows 11 64-bit, making a combined play-and-host machine more straightforward.
  • Batch files provide a simple, visible way to start the server and preserve launch arguments.

Windows installation path

  1. Install a supported 64-bit Windows edition, apply current security updates, and create a dedicated account with only the permissions needed to run the server.
  2. Install SteamCMD and use Rust App ID 258550 to download or update the dedicated-server files.
  3. Create a batch file in the server directory. Facepunch’s Windows example launches RustDedicated.exe -batchmode; add the world, server identity, networking, and RCON parameters appropriate to your deployment.
  4. Open only the required game, query, and administration ports in Windows Firewall. Do not disable the firewall as a shortcut for troubleshooting.
  5. Run the batch file manually once, confirm that the server reaches its normal startup state, and verify that a remote player can connect.
  6. Use Task Scheduler or a service wrapper for automatic startup and recovery, and arrange scheduled backups before updates or wipes.
  7. Test remote administration and a full restore. A graphical desktop does not replace a recovery plan.

Windows administration trade-offs

Windows can reduce the learning curve for GUI-oriented operators, but it still requires disciplined patching, account hardening, firewall configuration, and monitoring. A desktop session consumes resources and increases the software surface compared with a minimal headless installation. Server-edition licensing may also change the total cost of ownership, especially for a long-running commercial host.

Maintenance and update risk

Linux distribution lifecycle

Linux’s main operational risk is not the SteamCMD command itself; it is the lifecycle of the distribution and its libraries. In an April 2025 “Soft Refresh” announcement, Facepunch warned that Debian 10 and Ubuntu 18 dedicated-server support would be retired and urged owners and hosting providers to update their infrastructure.

Do not pin a production server to an old image simply because it currently boots. Choose a supported distribution, document its version, and schedule testing for operating-system and Rust updates. Before a major game update or forced wipe:

  • Test the update on a staging instance or maintenance window.
  • Confirm that plugins and automation still work.
  • Keep a rollback image or replacement host available.

Windows patching lifecycle

Windows administrators should apply security updates on a planned schedule, reboot deliberately, and confirm that the Rust process restarts afterward. Keep the server installation and backups separate from the operating-system volume when practical. Document whether remote desktop, scheduled tasks, firewall rules, and antivirus exclusions are still present after a major update.

Security, ports, and hosting location

Security controls apply to both operating systems. Facepunch recommends a dedicated environment, strong DDoS protection, the ability to change IP addresses quickly, firewall knowledge, and careful handling of query and RCON ports for public or hidden servers.

Public servers

  • Use a dedicated host or isolated virtual machine rather than sharing the game process with unrelated, sensitive workloads.
  • Put DDoS protection in front of the server when your provider offers it, and know how traffic is filtered during an attack.
  • Restrict SSH or remote-desktop administration to trusted addresses, VPN access, or an allowlist where possible.
  • Use a strong, unique RCON password and never publish it in a startup script, screenshot, or public repository.
  • Monitor CPU, memory, disk, network traffic, failed logins, and unexpected restarts.

Hidden or private servers

Facepunch warns that the Steam query port exposes server information. If a server must remain undiscoverable, block the query port as recommended in the guide and allow only the traffic required for your private access method. Test the result from outside the host: a server that is hidden from the in-game browser may still reveal information through an incorrectly exposed query or administration port.

Port changes and recovery

Keep a written inventory of game, query, and RCON ports and the firewall rules that protect them. If your provider can change the public IP quickly, include that procedure in your incident plan. After a change, update DNS or player instructions, verify firewall rules, and test RCON from an authorized network before reopening the server.

Which operating system is easier?

Choose Linux when

  • You are comfortable with SSH, shell scripts, permissions, and command-line diagnostics.
  • The server will run headless in a data center or home lab without a monitor.
  • You want scripted updates, scheduled backups, automatic restarts, and low-touch operation.
  • You can track distribution support and test library changes before production updates.

Choose Windows when

  • You want graphical administration and already operate Windows servers confidently.
  • You plan to play Rust on the same Windows 11 64-bit machine that hosts the server.
  • Your support team relies on Windows-native remote-management and monitoring tools.
  • The extra licensing cost is understood and acceptable for your deployment.

Choose neither until you fix the design when

  • The host has less than the published 12 GB of free RAM or cannot provide the required disk headroom.
  • You are planning a large map without measuring memory and storage growth.
  • You cannot obtain reliable DDoS protection, firewall control, or a rapid IP-change procedure for a public server.
  • You have no tested backup and restore process.

A practical decision process

  1. Define the administration model. If every task will be performed over SSH and scripts, start with Linux. If operators need a desktop and remote graphical tools, start with Windows.
  2. Separate client and server needs. If one computer must host and run the Rust client, Windows aligns with the client’s officially listed platform. For a remote host, client parity is less important.
  3. Check lifecycle commitments. On Linux, verify that the distribution and libraries remain supported. On Windows, plan patch reboots and account for licensing.
  4. Size the machine. Meet the 12 GB free-RAM and 15 GB free-disk baseline, then add headroom for map size, population, logs, backups, and updates. Prefer SSD or NVMe storage.
  5. Design security before launch. Choose dedicated hosting, DDoS protection, firewall rules, protected RCON, and a response plan for IP changes.
  6. Run a failure drill. Restore a save, reboot the host, reconnect remotely, and verify that the server returns with the intended identity and settings.

Common problems and fixes

The server starts and then stops after disconnecting

On Linux, run the process inside screen or a service manager rather than an ordinary SSH shell. On Windows, use Task Scheduler or a service wrapper and check startup logs after a reboot.

The update fails or the binary no longer launches

Check distribution or Windows support status, free disk space, library and package changes, and the SteamCMD installation. Restore the last known-good backup or image, then test the update in a staging environment.

Players cannot find or join the server

Verify the server process, external IP address, game port, firewall rules, provider security group, and query-port decision. For a deliberately hidden server, blocking the query port is expected; provide an approved direct connection method instead.

Memory usage keeps climbing

Compare the world size and population with the 12 GB baseline, then inspect plugins, entity counts, save activity, and other workloads on the host. Add memory and storage headroom before increasing map size or player capacity.

RCON is unreachable

Confirm that RCON is enabled with a strong password, the configured port matches the firewall rule, and the service is listening only where intended. Never solve an RCON problem by opening every inbound port.

Bottom line

Linux is the better default for an experienced operator building a headless, automated Rust host. Windows is the better default for GUI administration, Windows-native tooling, or a combined play-and-host setup. Both platforms are officially supported for dedicated servers, both need the same published baseline of 12 GB free RAM and 15 GB free disk space, and both demand proper backups, firewall rules, DDoS protection, and lifecycle management. Select the platform your team can patch, secure, monitor, and recover—not the one that merely sounds faster.
