When Rust will not connect, first identify whether the server list is empty, one known server fails, every join attempt times out, or an Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) message appears. Those symptoms point to different failure points: Steam discovery, your local network, Windows security software, Rust files, EAC’s backend, or the server itself.

Use the sequence below in order. It starts with low-risk checks, then separates discovery problems from EAC authentication and direct connection issues. Facepunch’s documented server-browser setting is at least 5,000 pings per minute; Steam recommends a wired test when Wi-Fi or powerline networking may be intermittently dropping packets.

Identify the failure before changing settings
Do not treat every “cannot connect” message as the same problem. Record what happens immediately after you click a server or press F1, and whether the problem affects one server or all of them.

If the symptom changes after an update, note the date and whether Steam, Rust, Windows, your antivirus, or the router firmware updated. Firewall permissions can be reset by software updates, so a previously working installation may need authorization again.

Why Rust’s server list can be empty or incomplete
Rust does not build its list by contacting every game server directly from scratch. Facepunch explains that Rust asks Steam for the server collection and then sends A2S queries to obtain server details. The result depends on several network exchanges rather than a single connection.
Packet loss, a congested route, DDoS conditions affecting a server or provider, and geographic distance can make those queries slow or incomplete. A blank list therefore does not prove that every Rust server is offline. It can mean that discovery responses are arriving too late, being filtered, or never reaching your computer.
Steam’s browser-ping limit controls how aggressively the client searches. Facepunch’s support guidance says to set “Server browser pings / minute” to a minimum of 5,000. Lower values can leave the list sparse, especially when many servers are available or your route has high latency.
Run the basic correction sequence
- Close Rust and Steam completely. Exit Rust, then use Steam’s menu to exit Steam rather than leaving it in the notification area. Reopen Steam after the remaining processes close.
- Launch the normal Rust edition. Start Rust from your Steam library and choose the regular game. Do not launch Rust Staging for ordinary public servers. If you opted into a Steam beta branch, return to the standard branch unless the server operator explicitly requires a test build.
- Set the browser-ping rate. In Steam, open Settings, go to the section containing the in-game server browser settings, and set Server browser pings / minute to 5,000 or higher. Restart Steam after changing it.
- Disable a VPN or custom tunnel. Disconnect consumer VPNs, gaming tunnels, proxy software, and split-tunnel rules for the test. They can alter the route, block UDP traffic, or make Steam discovery appear incomplete. Re-enable the service after testing if you need it for another purpose.
- Restart the network path. Power off the modem and router, wait for them to finish shutting down, then restart the modem and router before reopening Steam. This clears transient state; it does not repair an outage at your internet provider or the game server.
- Verify Rust’s files. In Steam, open Rust’s library page, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Allow the process to replace missing or damaged files, then launch Rust again.
- Check security permissions. Make sure Windows Firewall and your antivirus allow Steam, Rust, and Easy Anti-Cheat. If Windows displayed a permission prompt after an update, approve the appropriate private or trusted-network access. Do not permanently disable protection as a shortcut; create or restore an application exception instead.
- Test with a direct cable. Connect the PC to the router with an Ethernet cable, preferably a Cat6 cable or another known-good cable, and temporarily turn off Wi-Fi on the PC. Steam specifically warns that wireless and powerline connections can suffer intermittent failures from interference. A successful wired test identifies the local wireless or powerline segment as the next thing to fix.
- Retest with two unrelated servers. Choose servers in different regions or run direct connections if you know their addresses. If one works and another does not, the problem is unlikely to be a total Rust-client outage.
Perform the steps in this order so that a changed result has diagnostic value. For example, if a wired connection immediately restores joins, reinstalling Rust would have been unnecessary.
Fix an empty or incomplete server browser
Confirm Steam discovery settings
After setting the ping rate to 5,000 or more, wait for the list to repopulate instead of repeatedly refreshing it. Steam may need time to collect and query results. Keep the normal Rust branch selected while testing; Staging and beta builds can have a different server population and are not the right comparison for ordinary servers.

Remove route-changing software
Turn off VPNs, proxies, traffic shapers, and security products that inspect game traffic. If the list returns only after one of these is disabled, add a narrowly scoped exception or use a different route rather than leaving all protection disabled.

Separate discovery from joining
If the browser is empty but you know a server address, press F1 in Rust and enter:
connect IP:Port
Replace IP:Port with the server’s current address. This bypasses the browser’s display step, but it does not bypass server-side requirements, EAC, passwords, queues, version checks, or an offline server. A successful direct connection confirms that discovery was the failing stage.
When Rust keeps timing out on every server
Use a wired isolation test
Steam’s support guidance identifies Wi-Fi and powerline connections as sources of intermittent failure caused by interference. Connect directly to the router with Ethernet, stop other heavy uploads or downloads, and try again. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, investigate signal strength, the wireless band, channel congestion, mesh-node placement, and powerline adapters before changing Rust files.
Check the local firewall after updates
Windows Firewall rules can change when Steam, Rust, EAC, Windows, or antivirus software updates. In Windows Security, open the firewall area and review Allow an app through firewall. Ensure the installed Steam, Rust, and EAC executables are permitted on the network profile you actually use. Third-party security suites have their own application-control and web-filtering lists; check those as well.

Do not open arbitrary inbound ports or turn off the firewall globally just to test. Rust clients normally need outbound access, and a broad firewall change can create a security problem without proving which rule was responsible.
Verify files before reinstalling
File verification is faster and less disruptive than a complete reinstall. It can restore a damaged executable or dependency that prevents a clean session. If verification repeatedly reports changes, check the drive for errors, available free space, and antivirus quarantine history; a file that is immediately removed will keep failing verification.
Resolve EAC Authentication Timeout
Facepunch describes an EAC Authentication Timeout as an inability to authenticate the connection within the required time. It is different from an empty server list: Steam may discover servers normally while EAC authentication fails during the join.
- Wait up to 10 minutes once. A temporary EAC service or route delay can clear without local changes. Do not repeatedly launch and terminate Rust during that waiting period.
- Verify Rust files. Use Steam’s Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files, then restart Steam.
- Repair EAC. Open Rust’s installation folder, enter its EasyAntiCheat folder, and run
EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe repair. Complete the repair, restart the computer if requested, and try a normal EAC-secured server. - Recheck security software. Make sure the repaired EAC service and Rust executable are not quarantined, blocked, or restricted by an application-control rule.
If the timeout persists on multiple servers after these steps, compare the result on a wired connection and with a different network, such as a trusted mobile hotspot. A change between networks points to the original route or filtering policy rather than the Rust installation.

Resolve “EAC Disconnected”
“EAC Disconnected” means the game cannot maintain a connection to Easy Anti-Cheat backend servers. The server therefore cannot verify that EAC is enabled and disconnects the client. This is a backend-connectivity problem, not merely a missing server-browser entry.

Permit the EAC backend
Review antivirus, firewall, DNS-filtering, parental-control, and corporate-network rules. Facepunch identifies client.easyanticheat.net as a host that must be reachable. Add an allow rule for that host or the relevant EAC application in the security product controlling the connection. If you are on a managed school or workplace network, the administrator may need to permit it; do not attempt to bypass organizational controls.
Check whether the block is network-specific
Try the same account on a normal home connection or another authorized network. If EAC works there, preserve the working Rust installation and focus on DNS filtering, HTTPS inspection, firewall policy, or the router’s security service on the original network.

You can launch RustClient.exe without EAC and try the Facepunch unsecure server as a comparison. If that succeeds while EAC-secured servers fail, EAC is strongly implicated. This mode is diagnostic only: it cannot join normal EAC-secured servers, so it does not solve the problem for regular multiplayer.
Connect when the browser entry itself is broken
When a server’s address is known, press F1 to open Rust’s console and enter:
connect IP:Port
Use the exact address supplied by the server operator, including the port. Do not add quotation marks. If the command reports that the server is unavailable, confirm the address and current port with the operator; server hosts can change addresses, rotate ports, restart, or restrict access without your client being at fault.

For a local dedicated server using Rust’s documented default port, enter:

This works only when the server is running on the same computer and is configured for that port. If the host uses another port, replace 28015 with the configured value. A local connection does not test internet routing, Steam discovery, or remote-server availability.
Distinguish a server-side outage from a client problem
Use scope and comparison rather than repeated retries. A single server that fails while several unrelated servers work is usually a server-side state, address, queue, version, password, map, or capacity issue. Contact that server’s operator and include the exact error and time.
If every server fails, test the same client on Ethernet and, where permitted, a different network. If all networks fail after file verification and EAC repair, the remaining possibilities include a damaged installation, a blocked account or server requirement, an EAC service incident, or a game update mismatch. If only one region fails, geographic routing or a regional provider incident is more plausible than a universal Rust failure.
Do not infer an outage solely from a slow list. Facepunch notes that packet loss, DDoS conditions, and geographic distance can make A2S results slow or incomplete. Give discovery time, then use a known address to determine whether joining works independently of listing.
Common mistakes that prolong the outage
- Using Staging or a beta branch for normal servers: the build and server population may not match the public release.
- Leaving a VPN enabled during every test: a changed route can hide whether the original connection is healthy.
- Refreshing an empty list without changing the ping limit: repeated refreshes do not correct an overly low Steam browser setting.
- Disabling all security software permanently: this creates exposure and does not identify the specific blocked executable or host.
- Reinstalling before verifying files: verification and EAC repair often resolve damaged components with less downtime.
- Treating a non-EAC launch as a multiplayer workaround: it cannot join ordinary EAC-secured servers.
- Assuming a known IP guarantees access: direct connect still requires a running server, compatible build, correct port, and any required authentication.
- Testing only one server: one offline or overloaded server can look like a global client failure.
A compact decision tree
- Is the list empty? Set Steam browser pings/minute to at least 5,000, disable VPNs, restart the router, verify files, and wait for discovery. If an address is known, test
connect IP:Port. - Does one server fail while others work? Check that server’s address, port, queue, password, update state, and availability with its operator.
- Do all servers time out? Use Ethernet, stop traffic-heavy applications, review firewall and antivirus permissions, and verify files.
- Does the message mention EAC Authentication Timeout? Wait up to 10 minutes, verify files, and run the EAC repair command.
- Does it say EAC Disconnected? Permit
client.easyanticheat.netand EAC through filtering software, then retest on an authorized alternate network. - Does non-EAC diagnostic mode work? Treat that as evidence of an EAC path problem, not as a permanent solution.
Keep the exact error text, server address, network type, Rust branch, and time of failure when asking for support. Those details tell the server operator or support team whether to investigate discovery, routing, files, EAC, or the server itself.
