Plan for an outage: maintenance mode blocks existing sessions and new logins while files are replaced and migrations run. Never rely on the updater’s internal backup alone; it covers the code tree, not your database or data directory.

Nextcloud’s update commands depend on the deployment method. Mixing an archive procedure with a Snap or Docker deployment can leave the instance unusable, so establish this first.

If you do not know which method you have, inspect how Nextcloud is managed: an archive install normally has a persistent Nextcloud directory such as /var/www/nextcloud and an occ command; a Snap, container, appliance, or distribution package has its own service or image lifecycle. Do not proceed until the update instructions match that lifecycle.

2. Check the target release and support status
Read the release notes and critical changes for every major version you intend to install. Look specifically for PHP, database, operating-system, web-server, and app requirements, plus changes that affect authentication, storage, or background jobs.
Nextcloud’s release schedule publishes a major version about every four months. Each major line is supported for one year with monthly maintenance releases. On the schedule page revised October 6, 2026, versions 33, 34, and 35 were supported, with version 35 listed as the latest line. Treat that status as date-sensitive: confirm the current schedule immediately before your maintenance window.
Choose the latest point (maintenance) release in your current major line as the first target, then the latest point release in the next major line. Continue that pattern until you reach your desired version. Nextcloud’s administration manual is explicit: You cannot skip major releases.
3. Schedule the maintenance window
Updating replaces application code and can run database and app migrations. Announce an outage long enough to cover downloads, migrations, verification, and possible retries. Stop automated jobs or integrations that would keep writing to the instance while you take the backup, and ensure you have administrative shell access if the web updater fails.
Maintenance mode locks existing sessions and prevents new logins. The built-in updater enables it automatically. If you need to enable it yourself on an archive installation, run this from the Nextcloud directory as the HTTP user:
sudo -E -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --onThe account may differ on your system; use the user your web server actually runs as. Running occ as the wrong user can create permission problems or fail to read the configuration.

4. Make a complete, tested backup
Create a fresh backup before every release step, not just before the first major upgrade. It must be restorable and must contain all four of these components:
- Database: the complete Nextcloud database, including tables created by installed apps.
- Data directory: every user file, version, trash item, and file-cache record stored there.
- Configuration: the Nextcloud configuration, including database credentials, trusted domains, encryption settings, and storage definitions.
- Code tree: the currently running Nextcloud files and app code.
Use your database engine’s normal, documented backup tool and your existing file-backup process; the exact command depends on whether the database is MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, or another supported engine. Store the backup where a failed server or disk cannot destroy both the live instance and its recovery copy. Check that files can be read, the database dump completes without errors, and at least one restore test has succeeded before treating the backup as usable.
The built-in updater’s code backup is only a safety net for the application files. It is stored beneath /updater-INSTANCEID/backups/nextcloud-CURRENTVERSION/ and does not include the database or /data. A successful updater download therefore never substitutes for your own full backup.
5. Review and disable third-party apps
Inventory every app that did not ship with the Nextcloud core. For each one, check whether its release supports the target Nextcloud major version and whether it has special migration instructions. Pay attention to authentication, storage, calendar, contacts, workflow, and external-integration apps because they can block an upgrade even when the core files are correct.

6. Upgrade one release step at a time
- Install the latest point release of your current major version.
- Complete its database and app migration and verify the instance.
- Run the updater again for the latest point release of the next major version.
- Repeat the migration, background-job, and verification checks after each major step.
For example, an instance on an older major line must move to that line’s newest maintenance release before moving to the next line, then continue sequentially. A direct jump over a major version is unsupported, even if the downloaded archive appears to install cleanly.

7. Choose the archive upgrade method

8. Run the built-in web updater
On an archive installation, sign in as an administrator and open Administration settings > Overview > Version. The web flow performs the same core checks as the command-line updater:
- Checks expected files and write permissions.
- Enables maintenance mode.
- Creates its limited code-only backup.
- Downloads and extracts the selected archive.
- Replaces the old application files with the new code.
Keep the browser window open until the updater reports completion. Do not refresh repeatedly or start a second updater process. If the web server or proxy times out, use the command-line updater and inspect the updater log rather than assuming that a timeout means the files were untouched.

From the archive installation directory, execute the updater as the HTTP user. A typical path is:
sudo -E -u www-data php /var/www/nextcloud/updater/updater.pharReplace both the user and path with the values used by your server. The command-line updater is suitable for a long migration because it is not held open by a browser request. It also supports batch operation for scripted maintenance, a custom archive URL when you have staged a specific release, and an option to disable the updater’s limited code backup when your own backup policy already covers the code tree. Disabling that internal backup does not remove the requirement for a complete database, data, configuration, and code backup.
10. Use a manual archive when necessary
If you choose a manual archive, download the exact point release selected in your version sequence, enable maintenance mode, and replace the old application code while retaining the existing configuration and data locations. Do not delete the only copy of the old code until the full backup and new files are verified. After the files are in place, run the database and app migration command described in the next section, then perform the same checks as an updater run.
11. Complete database and app migrations
Replacing files is only the code phase. The built-in updater documentation states: The built-in updater itself only replaces the existing files with the ones from the version it updates to.
The migration phase upgrades the database schema and app state and must be run afterward.

From the Nextcloud directory, run:
sudo -u www-data php ./occ upgradeUse the correct HTTP user for your server. Alternatively, use the web upgrade page when the updater presents that option and maintenance mode is being held for the migration. Watch the command output for an explicit success result and address any reported app or schema error before attempting the next release step.
12. Allow background migrations to finish
Major releases can schedule work that is intentionally processed by cron rather than during the foreground upgrade. After each major upgrade, run your configured cron job two or three times before beginning another major step. Then open the Administration settings and complete any long-running database maintenance commands it reports. Starting the next major upgrade while these jobs are pending increases the chance of a prolonged outage or migration failure.
13. Verify the upgraded instance
Keep maintenance mode on while you perform the initial checks. Review:
- the updater and
occ upgradeoutput for errors or skipped migrations; - the Nextcloud log and web-server/PHP logs for fatal errors;
- administrator status checks and required environment warnings;
- administrator and normal-user login;
- file listing, upload, download, sharing, and external storage access;
- background jobs and the configured cron execution;
- the status of each re-enabled third-party app.
When the checks pass, turn maintenance mode off:
sudo -E -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --offConfirm that a fresh login works and that background jobs continue after users return. Record the installed version, migration output, backup identifier, and any app changes in your maintenance log.
14. Recover from a failed updater run
An updater failure does not automatically mean that the installation is lost. Read the reported error, correct the underlying permission, disk-space, network, or compatibility problem, and retry. The updater is designed to resume from the failed step. Its log is updater.log in the configured data directory.
- Permission or ownership error: stop, correct ownership and write access for the HTTP user, and rerun the updater. Do not make the entire server world-writable.
- Insufficient disk space: free space or extend the filesystem, then verify that the archive can be downloaded and extracted before retrying.
- Web timeout: switch to the command-line updater and monitor it from the shell.
- App migration error: keep maintenance mode enabled, identify the incompatible app in the output or logs, and follow that app’s compatibility instructions before retrying.
- Database migration error: do not repeatedly guess at schema changes. Preserve the logs and use the tested backup if the cause cannot be corrected safely.
Do not delete the data directory or database to make a retry “clean.” Those are the parts the updater does not back up.

15. Understand downgrade and restore limits
Nextcloud does not support downgrading. Its administration manual warns: Downgrading is not supported and risks corrupting your data!
Replacing newer code with an older archive can leave database migrations and app state incompatible.
If the new release cannot be repaired, recovery means restoring the database, data directory, configuration, and code from a known-good backup into a fresh installation of the original version. Keep the restored instance isolated until you have verified its login, files, apps, and background jobs; then plan a new, sequential upgrade with the compatibility issue resolved.

16. Deployment-specific boundaries
Snap
Use the Snap package’s documented refresh process and its own service controls. Archive paths, the updater.phar workflow, and archive ownership commands do not apply automatically.
Docker
Update the image and persistent volumes according to the image documentation. The container’s entrypoint and database migration behavior determine when occ upgrade is run; do not copy an archive installation’s file-replacement steps into a running container.
Pre-built virtual machines
Follow the appliance publisher’s release and snapshot procedure. Take a VM snapshot only as an additional safeguard; it does not replace a tested database and data backup.
Package-manager installations
Use the package repository’s versioning and service restart instructions. Package-managed files, configuration paths, and service users may differ from an archive deployment.
