You can configure a Hindsight-connected agent to query existing memories without giving it Hindsight’s retain tool. But “free to self-host” does not mean a particular free host can run the service: you still need a compatible container environment, persistent storage, enough compute, and any required external services. No specific free host is established as suitable here.
What Hindsight does—and what “read-only” means
Hindsight is open-source agent-memory software. Its three core operations are retain, which stores information; recall, which retrieves relevant memories; and reflect, which analyzes memories and produces insights. The official quickstart describes recall as combining semantic, keyword/BM25, graph, and temporal retrieval. Retain uses an LLM to extract facts, temporal data, entities, and relationships.

For an agent that should consult existing memory but not add to it, the documented integration approach is to disable retain and enable recall and reflect. The Hindsight integration example uses enable_retain=False, enable_recall=True, and enable_reflect=True.

Configure the agent to expose only the needed tools
- In the Hindsight integration configuration for the agent, set
enable_retain=False. - Set
enable_recall=Trueso the agent can retrieve stored memories. - Set
enable_reflect=Trueif the agent should analyze those memories and produce insights.
This removes the retain tool from that agent’s documented tool set. It is a tool-availability configuration, not proof that the server enforces a write ban.

Do not treat MCP hints as access control
Hindsight’s MCP server documentation marks operations such as recall, reflect, list_*, and get_* with readOnlyHint: true. Write operations such as retain, create_*, update_*, and refresh_mental_model do not receive that hint. The hint is metadata for MCP clients; it is not an authorization policy. The documented sources do not establish a built-in per-tool authorization configuration that would make hiding a tool in the client a server-enforced security boundary.
A separate read-only database option
Hindsight 0.6.1 documents an optional read-only database backend for recall traffic. That supports recall through a read-only database connection while retain and reflect continue writing through the primary. It addresses a different use case—database traffic and scaling—not the configuration of an agent that must not retain memories. See the Hindsight documentation for version-specific details.

What a free-host deployment requires
The Hindsight quickstart’s Docker example runs an API on port 8888 and a control-plane UI on port 9999. It mounts persistent data at /home/hindsight/.pg0, where the embedded database lives. If that data is lost when a free host sleeps, restarts, or removes its disk, the stored memories may be lost too.

The installation guide recommends a Docker named volume. Docker creates it with ownership suitable for the container’s non-root UID 1000. If you instead use a host bind mount, the host directory must be owned by UID 1000 or the embedded database can fail to start.

Check image size and dependencies
The vendor’s installation guide lists the full Docker image at approximately 9 GB for AMD64 and 3.7 GB for ARM64. Its slim image is approximately 500 MB on either architecture, but requires external services for the database, embeddings, and reranking. Neither image removes the need for an external LLM for inference.

- Container support and image-pull limits, especially for the full image.
- Available RAM, CPU, and persistent disk capacity.
- Whether persistent storage survives restarts, idle suspension, or plan changes.
- Outbound network access for required services and LLM inference.
- Whether the host sleeps or suspends idle workloads, and what that means for availability.
- Charges or limits for any external database, embedding, reranking, or LLM services.
These requirements follow from Hindsight’s published deployment options and dependencies; they do not certify any provider. Since no host is specified, feasibility and current free-tier limits remain provider-specific.
Choose between Docker, the slim image, and Hindsight Cloud

“Free” has two distinct meanings here. The Vectorize pricing page describes self-hosting as free and the software as MIT-licensed; that is about the software, not the machine, database services, or LLM calls. Hindsight Cloud is a separate managed service with usage-based billing and free credits to start. Pricing and service terms can change, so confirm them on the vendor’s current page.
Is a free host the right choice?
A free host is plausible only if its current limits accommodate the selected image and the deployment’s storage, compute, network, and uptime needs. The full image’s size can be a practical blocker; the slim image reduces the image download but shifts database, embedding, and reranking requirements elsewhere. If you need a managed deployment rather than a host to maintain, Hindsight Cloud is the official alternative, but it is not equivalent to a permanently free self-hosted machine.
