The simplest test is the outcome: do the Developers leave with an actionable plan for their upcoming work?
What a Daily Scrum is meant to do
The Scrum Guide defines the event’s purpose as: “The purpose of the Daily Scrum is to inspect progress toward the Sprint Goal and adapt the Sprint Backlog as necessary, adjusting the upcoming planned work.” (Scrum Guide, November 2020.) That makes the Sprint Goal—not a round of individual progress reports—the reference point for the conversation.

The Daily Scrum is a 15-minute event for the Scrum Team’s Developers. The Product Owner or Scrum Master participates as a Developer when actively working on Sprint Backlog items. The team chooses its structure and technique; the Scrum Guide does not require a specific script. The event should focus on progress toward the Sprint Goal and result in an actionable plan for the next day’s work. (Scrum.org: What is a Daily Scrum?; Scrum.org: Conducting the Daily Scrum.)
How to tell whether it has turned into a status meeting
Look at how the information is used, not just who speaks or how the meeting is arranged. Scrum.org identifies a pattern of people waiting to report progress to a Scrum Master, Product Owner, or stakeholder without collaboration that changes the plan as a Daily Scrum anti-pattern. (Daily Scrum Anti-Patterns: 20 Ways to Improve.)
#1 Best Overall
- 6 SETS OF CARDS IN 1 DECK – Easily estimate with up to 6 team members.
- FUN COLOR AND DESIGN – Amazing colors and design for each set and sequence to clearly differentiate and be able to estimate and discuss quickly.
- HIGH QUALITY CARDS – Durable cards that can be used over and over for every planning session. Includes a box for additional protection.
- FIBONACCI SEQUENCE – Simple sequence for all of your estimation needs. 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, ∞, ?, and coffee cup.
- Task recitals replace goal inspection. People list completed and planned tasks, but the team does not discuss what those updates mean for progress toward the Sprint Goal.
- Updates travel upward. Participants address a manager or facilitator rather than talking with one another to coordinate, request help, or make decisions.
- New information does not affect the plan. The team identifies a change, dependency, or obstacle but does not consider whether the upcoming work or Sprint Backlog should be adapted.
- There is no shared next step. The meeting ends without a clear, actionable plan for the Developers’ upcoming work.
- Detailed discussion consumes the event. A complex problem-solving conversation takes over instead of being continued afterward with the people needed.
These are indicators, not a checklist for judging a team from one meeting. Scrum.org’s distinction is that collaboration should enable adaptation toward the Sprint Goal, rather than serve as management monitoring. (Navigating the Scrum Events – Daily Scrum.)
A quick diagnostic for your next Daily Scrum
Observe the conversation and ask:
- Are we inspecting progress toward the Sprint Goal, or only recounting individual tasks?
- Are Developers coordinating with one another, asking for help, and making decisions?
- When we learn something that matters, do we consider adapting the upcoming plan or Sprint Backlog?
- Do we finish with an actionable plan the Developers can use?
- Are detailed discussions that need more time moved to a follow-up with the relevant people?
The answers matter more than whether the team stands up, follows a round-robin, or uses a particular board. Format alone does not determine whether the event is serving its purpose.

- ✅ Product content & size: One package includes 4 sets of cards. So you can play with 4 team members at the same time.
- ✅ Grade tasks & plan: Grade tasks with Fibonacci numbers or T-shirt sizes from XS to XXL. The cards have the values: 0, ½, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20, 40, 100, ? and a coffee card.
- ✅ Organize & store: Organize your cards at all time by keeping them looped through a ring that can be opened and closed. For the most convenience you can store the cards by hanging them on a magnetic hook.
- ✅ Design that lasts for years: PATboard products are designed from our passion for agile project management. We designed them to look beautiful and used high-quality materials so you can keep using them for years.
How to reset the meeting without imposing a script
- Put the Sprint Goal in view. Use it as the shared reference for discussing progress, rather than beginning with a mandatory report from each person.
- Discuss what the team has learned. Surface progress, obstacles, dependencies, or changed circumstances that affect the goal.
- Decide whether the plan needs to change. If the information warrants it, adapt the Sprint Backlog or the upcoming planned work; identify any help or decisions needed.
- Confirm the next working day’s plan. Make sure the Developers leave knowing what they will do next and how it supports progress toward the Sprint Goal.
- Take extended problem-solving offline. Keep the event within its 15-minute timebox, then continue complex discussions with the people needed.
Let the Developers choose the format that supports this work. The historic “three questions” are not a required Scrum Guide script; Scrum.org notes that the 2020 Guide dropped the classic questions. (Making Your Daily Scrums More Effective.)

- Save money, clutter, and time
| Ask | Aim for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| What is the focus? | Progress toward the Sprint Goal | Individual task reporting detached from the goal |
| Who is the conversation for? | Peer coordination among Developers | Updates directed upward to a manager or meeting leader |
| What happens with new information? | Adaptation and an actionable plan | Information collection without a change or clear next step |
| How are complex topics handled? | Focused follow-up with the relevant people | Detailed problem-solving that overruns the timebox |
A Daily Scrum is not defined by a required sequence of status updates. The useful distinction is whether the team inspects progress and adapts its work, or merely collects reports.
