Start with RuneScape if you want a modern, broad progression system and the flexibility to configure combat and interface settings. Choose Old School RuneScape (OSRS) if its retro style, challenging levelling, risk-it-all PvP, and community-influenced development are what you want from an MMO. Neither is established as objectively easier for beginners; the better fit depends on which experience you are looking for.
RuneScape and OSRS are separate games, not difficulty settings
RuneScape is Jagex’s modern MMO, with a broad mix of skills, quests, and combat. Jagex’s RuneScape game guide describes it as free to play and lists 29 skills; the page does not state when that count was published.

OSRS has a deliberately retro-styled identity. Jagex describes it as a game of “challenging levelling” and “risk-it-all PvP” on its official OSRS site. It is an actively maintained game, not simply an abandoned version preserved from the past: the site listed a news item dated 25 September 2026 when reviewed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction matters when choosing. RuneScape’s Legacy options can alter aspects of its combat and interface, but they do not convert it into OSRS. They remain distinct games with different presentations and development approaches.

Working together we're continuing to develop RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Whether you're adventuring with friends or going it alone, every opinion matters, and it's up to you to help us shape the future of our game.
Which game fits the way you want to play?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A modern MMO with a wide skill and quest offering | RuneScape | Jagex’s guide lists 29 skills and presents the game as free to play. |
| Retro presentation and a levelling system Jagex calls challenging | OSRS | That identity is central to Jagex’s official description. |
| Options for changing combat and interface feel | RuneScape | Legacy settings let you adjust combat and interface choices, but do not make RuneScape mechanically identical to OSRS. |
| Risk-it-all PvP and a community-influenced approach to development | OSRS | Jagex highlights risk-it-all PvP and describes OSRS development as community-controlled. |
| A guaranteed easier introduction | Neither can be recommended on that basis | No comparative onboarding study establishes that one is easier for beginners. |
Combat and interface: RuneScape gives you settings to explore
RuneScape supports Evolution of Combat as well as Legacy options. Jagex’s combat options guide describes choices that can mix and match combat and interface settings. That flexibility may appeal if you want to try different ways of interacting with the game.
Do not treat Legacy as a way to get OSRS inside RuneScape. The option changes how RuneScape feels in certain respects; the two titles remain separate experiences. If you specifically want OSRS’s retro identity and risk-oriented PvP, choose OSRS itself.

Progression: choose the challenge you actually want
RuneScape’s official game guide lists 29 skills, while its membership page advertises 12 exclusive skills as a membership benefit. The 12 is not the total number of skills in the game. OSRS’s official description foregrounds challenging levelling. These are signals about each game’s stated offering, not a measured comparison of how long skills take to advance or how hard either game is to learn.
For a beginner, the practical question is not which title has the objectively simpler progression—it has not been established that either does. Ask whether RuneScape’s broader modern systems or OSRS’s deliberately retro, challenging presentation sounds more motivating to return to.

Free access, membership, and Bonds
Both games can be entered without membership. Jagex describes membership as unlocking substantial additional content across the two eras. For RuneScape specifically, its membership page advertises access to a world it describes as three times larger, 12 exclusive skills, and 45 members-only bosses. Those are Jagex’s stated membership benefits; exact current subscription rates and platform billing terms are not established here.
Jagex Support says a subscription unlocks the full world of Gielinor, including the full map, exclusive quests and skills, and future content in both eras. Check the live regional plan and the checkout on the platform where you intend to play before paying, since price and billing details can vary.

- Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
Bonds are not interchangeable between the games. Jagex’s Old School Bonds support page says OSRS Bonds can be traded within OSRS and redeemed for membership, but cannot be transferred to RuneScape to use for RuneCoins or Keys. Decide which game you want before buying a Bond or membership.

How each game is developed
OSRS: community-controlled development
Jagex describes OSRS development as community-controlled. That is useful context if you value a game whose direction is explicitly tied to community input; it is a description of the development approach, not a guarantee that every requested change will be made.

RuneScape: a changing modern journey
RuneScape’s Reignited page describes restoration changes, an in-game Gielinor Adventure Guide, integrated plugins, and the removal of Treasure Hunter and Hero Pass. It also says later parts of its remastered journey are planned for 2027. Roadmaps can change, so treat that as Jagex’s stated plan rather than a guarantee of future delivery.
Quick Recap
A simple way to make the choice
- Choose OSRS if you actively want retro presentation, challenging levelling, and risk-it-all PvP.
- Choose RuneScape if a modern, wide-ranging skill and quest game sounds more appealing, especially if you want combat and interface settings to explore.
- Try the free entry first if you are unsure. Decide whether to subscribe only after checking the current regional and platform checkout for the game you chose.
- Buy for the right game. OSRS Bonds stay within OSRS and cannot be moved to RuneScape.
