To play RuneScape: Dragonwilds with friends, start or load a multiplayer world, then have friends find it in the in-game world browser. For cross-platform play, the host must enable cross-play for that world when loading it. A dedicated server is optional; choose one if your group wants a world that does not depend on a player’s active session.
How to play with friends in a multiplayer world
- From the in-game menu, start or load a multiplayer world.
- When hosting the world, choose whether to enable cross-play. This is a per-world host choice, not a setting that automatically applies to every save.
- Ask friends to look for the world in the in-game browser. Jagex says cross-play-enabled worlds appear there.
Jagex announced cross-play for the 1.0 release across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The 1.0 release date was September 15, 2026. The official instructions establish the world-browser flow; menu labels and invite options may vary by platform, so use the options shown in your current game version. When a dedicated server makes sense
A dedicated server is useful when the group wants its world to run independently of an ordinary player’s hosted session. It is not required for ordinary co-op. Jagex documents three routes: a third-party hosting partner, a computer at home, or a cloud computer.

For home hosting, Jagex supports 64-bit Windows and Linux, specifies 2 GB of base memory plus 1 GB per player, and lists capacity up to six players as of update 0.11 in March 2026. Its default server ports start at 7777 and must be reachable over UDP through the computer’s firewall, router, and internet provider. These are dedicated-server requirements, not prerequisites for joining a friend’s ordinary multiplayer world.

How to find a dedicated server
- Open the Worlds menu and select the Public tab.
- Search for the server’s exact world name. The name is case-sensitive, so ask the owner to provide it exactly.
- Select the world if it appears and try to join.
Jagex’s dedicated-server guide says the dedicated-server download is a free Steam product. Owners must configure an Owner ID, Server Name, Default World Name, and Admin password. Back up a local save before moving it to a dedicated server or making major changes; Jagex also documents save migration and backup procedures in that guide.
What to check if a server is missing or you cannot join
- Check versions: the game client and server need to be on compatible versions, especially after an update or hotfix.
- Recheck the name: search the exact, case-sensitive world name in Worlds > Public.
- Confirm required settings: the owner should verify that mandatory server configuration, including the required identity and world settings, is present.
- Inspect server logs: Jagex points owners to logs when a server is missing or not behaving as expected.
- If the server appears but is not joinable: for a self-hosted server, check UDP port reachability and port forwarding through the firewall and router.
Connection behavior can change between patches. Jagex’s September 2026 version 1.0.0.5 notes described a targeted fix for failures when more than two users were already on a multiplayer server, including a specific Xbox case. The same notes mentioned a console issue involving joining modded dedicated servers and save corruption. Those notes describe issues addressed in that version; they do not establish whether a similar issue is present in a later build.
