Yes, according to the DEV Community tutorial by Ryo Tanaka (dated September 26), you can start an nginx container with Boxr as an ordinary user, using a single run command with no root-owned daemon and no sudo. Whether that works on your machine depends on Linux user namespaces being available and on Boxr’s own installation requirements, which the tutorial describes but which I could not confirm against Boxr’s primary documentation. The steps below follow the tutorial’s account, and the final section lists what to check before you rely on them.
What Boxr is, as the tutorial describes it
The tutorial presents Boxr as an OCI container engine written in Rust that runs rootless by default. Its central claims are that there is no root-owned daemon, no sudo for routine commands, and no setuid helper binaries. Rootlessness works through a Linux user namespace: the container’s UID 0 maps to your own UID on the host, so a process that appears to be root inside the container has no root privileges on the host.

Before you start
- A Linux machine with user namespaces available. The tutorial names this as its requirement but does not give kernel versions or configuration steps.
- Boxr installed through one of the two paths the tutorial lists: Homebrew or the project’s shell installer. Copy the installer command from Boxr’s current documentation rather than from an older post.
- Network access, because the first run pulls
nginx:latest. - Host port 8080 free, because the first example publishes it.
Run nginx as your own user

Start a detached nginx container. Run:
boxr run -d --name web -p 8080:80 nginx:latest-druns the container in the background,--name webgives it a name you can use in later commands, and-p 8080:80publishes container port 80 on host port 8080. On first use the tutorial says Boxr pulls the image automatically.#1 Best Overall

Write files to the host through a bind mount
The tutorial’s second example shows how a container can write into a host directory without sudo chown afterwards. It uses Alpine and keeps the container alive with sleep 3600, which is one hour.

Create the host directory.
mkdir -p ~/boxr-data -
Start the container with a read-write mount.
boxr run -d --name files -v ~/boxr-data:/data:rw alpine sleep 3600 -
Write a file from inside the container.
boxr exec files sh -c "echo hello > /data/greeting.txt" -
Read it from the host.
cat ~/boxr-data/greeting.txtThe output should be
hello. The tutorial also says the file is owned by your host user. You can confirm this withls -l ~/boxr-data; the owner column should show your login name, not root.Rank #3

boxr stop files && boxr rm filesThe host file remains in
~/boxr-dataafter the container is removed, since it lives on the host.
Ports below 1024
The tutorial says Boxr’s user-space TCP proxy publishes ports without privileged binding. The examples avoid the problem by using host port 8080. The tutorial’s broader claim, that the same mechanism handles host ports below 1024, is not confirmed against Boxr’s documentation, so do not assume -p 80:80 will work for an unprivileged user.

Rootless does not mean no host setup
The table below compares what the tutorial says about Boxr with the published requirements of Docker’s Rootless mode. Docker’s figures describe Docker only. They are included to show what to check, not as Boxr requirements.

RootlessKit’s project documentation describes the same building blocks: user and mount namespaces, subordinate ID mapping, and optional userspace networking. That shows how rootless containers generally work, but it does not establish which of these Boxr uses. Also, “no sudo for routine commands” does not mean no administrator work is ever needed. If user namespaces are disabled or subordinate IDs are missing on your host, you may have to fix that configuration once, even though Boxr itself never calls sudo.

When something goes wrong
boxr --versionis not found: the installer did not place the binary on yourPATH. Reinstall using the current instructions from Boxr’s documentation.curlreturns nothing or refuses the connection: runboxr psto confirmwebis running, thenboxr logs webto see whether nginx started. Check whether another process already holds port 8080 withss -ltn | grep 8080.- A container fails to start on a machine without user namespaces: the tutorial does not describe the error message, so compare what you see with Boxr’s current troubleshooting guidance rather than with this article.
- Leftover containers after an interrupted run:
boxr psshows what is still running. Stop and remove a container withboxr stop NAME && boxr rm NAME, substituting its name.
