How WinBoat runs Windows applications
WinBoat is an Electron application that manages a Windows VM inside a Docker or Podman container. The WinBoat Guest Server communicates information from the Windows guest, while Windows RemoteApp and FreeRDP present individual application windows on the Linux desktop. The project also describes mounting the user’s home directory in Windows for file sharing. These are the project’s descriptions of its design, not independent performance test results. See the official WinBoat README.

The practical distinction is that Windows remains responsible for running the program. WinBoat integrates the program’s window into a Linux workflow; it does not remove the need for Windows or make every Windows app compatible.

Check your system before installing
WinBoat’s documented minimums and prerequisites are:

- KVM enabled in BIOS or UEFI.
- FreeRDP 3.x with sound support.
- One supported container setup: Docker with Docker Compose v2, or Podman with Podman Compose.
The README says Docker Desktop is unsupported and instructs Docker users to add their account to the Docker group. For Debian and Ubuntu, it warns that repository versions of Podman may be too old and calls for Podman 4.x.x or later. Consult the current README and your distribution’s package instructions to confirm the applicable steps and versions.
These are documented minimums, not a promise that a particular application will run smoothly. A VM also shares the computer’s resources with Linux, so workload and available memory matter. The project material does not provide independent hardware benchmarks.

Choose a container runtime
Docker and Podman are the documented runtime options; the project does not establish a universal performance winner. Choose based on what you can install and maintain on your distribution, and whether you need features that differ by runtime.
- Docker: Install Docker and Docker Compose v2; do not use Docker Desktop. The README instructs users to add their account to the Docker group.
- Podman: Install Podman and Podman Compose. On Debian or Ubuntu, check the version carefully because the project warns that distribution repositories may be too old. The README marks USB passthrough through Podman unsupported.
Install WinBoat using a package for your distribution
The project lists AppImage, unpacked Linux files, Debian .deb, Fedora .rpm and Nix through nixpkgs-unstable. Choose the route that matches your distribution and package-management preference, then follow the current instructions in the official README. The project describes AppImage as broadly portable, but does not promise compatibility with every distribution.

- Confirm the hardware, KVM, FreeRDP and runtime prerequisites above.
- Select the installation format supported by your Linux system: AppImage, unpacked files,
.deb,.rpmor Nix. - Follow the README’s current install and setup instructions for that format and runtime. Requirements and feature support can change between releases.
- Use WinBoat to set up the Windows environment and add the applications you need. The project material describes the workflow but does not establish a single set of UI labels or steps that applies to every release.
Know the limitations that affect app choice
Beta status and troubleshooting
WinBoat labels itself beta and warns that users should expect occasional bugs and troubleshooting. Treat it as a project that may need attention rather than a guaranteed, polished replacement for a Windows PC.
Graphics-heavy software and games
The official WinBoat FAQ says GPU acceleration is not available at present. It does not publish benchmarks showing how any particular application performs. Software that depends on 3D acceleration or demanding graphics may therefore be a poor fit, and native-Windows performance parity should not be assumed.

The FAQ also says games using kernel anti-cheat cannot run because those systems block virtualization. WinBoat should not be treated as a general workaround for games with that restriction.

USB devices
USB support depends on the release and runtime. The FAQ describes USB passthrough as experimental from WinBoat 0.8.0, while the README says USB passthrough through Podman is unsupported. Check the current release notes for your runtime before relying on a USB device.

Office 365
Asked whether Office 365 can run, the project FAQ answers yes. That is the project’s statement, not independent compatibility testing or confirmation of licensing, subscription or account requirements for a specific Office edition.

WinBoat is most plausible when you need an ordinary Windows desktop application, can accept that it runs inside a Windows VM, and meet the documented prerequisites. Look for another approach if the software requires GPU acceleration, the game depends on kernel anti-cheat, or reliable USB passthrough is essential and your chosen runtime does not support it.
Because the README and FAQ are mutable project documentation, verify the current release instructions and feature status before setting up a system you depend on.
