For Python that runs on the Chromebook itself, use Pyodide in a browser. It runs Python through WebAssembly without a local installation or a hosted execution server. If you only need to avoid installing software and your school allows it, Google Colab is another browser option—but Colab runs code on hosted machines, so it does not meet a strict no-server requirement.
A school-managed Chromebook may block websites or accounts, and its policies can differ from device to device. Browser-based tools avoid the need for Linux or administrator access, but they cannot bypass school restrictions.
Choose the option that matches what “no server” means
| Option | Where Python runs | Installation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pyodide | In the browser on the Chromebook, using WebAssembly | No local installation for the browser REPL | A strict no-hosted-server requirement and browser-friendly Python work |
| Google Colab | On a hosted runtime, accessed through the browser | No local installation; Google describes it as zero-configuration | Notebook work when remote execution is acceptable and school access is allowed |
| Linux on Chromebook | In a Linux environment on the device | Requires enabling Linux and installing tools | Not a match for this guide’s no-install constraint; school accounts may not have access |
Pyodide’s project documentation describes it as a Python distribution for browsers and Node.js based on WebAssembly. Google describes Colab as a hosted Jupyter Notebook service. The distinction matters: browser access does not necessarily mean code executes locally.
Run Python with Pyodide in the browser
The Pyodide quickstart links to an online REPL where you can try Python without installing a local runtime. For a first test, enter a short expression such as print("Hello, Python") and run it using the page’s controls. The exact interface can vary as the online REPL changes.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Pyodide can also be embedded in a web page: its documented API includes pyodide.runPython. That is useful context for developers building browser applications, but a student who just wants to run a few lines does not need to create a web page or install an extension.
What Pyodide can and cannot run
The project supports many packages, including NumPy, pandas, SciPy, Matplotlib, and scikit-learn. Availability is not automatic for every package: the quickstart setup has standard-library packages available initially, and additional supported packages must be loaded separately. A package that depends on native components or is not built for Pyodide may not work as it would in a conventional desktop Python installation.

- Screen Size: 11.6"
Pyodide’s usage documentation recommends using a current browser for WebAssembly support. Its supported-browser table reported testing Chrome 112 or later when that documentation was published; treat that as a version-specific documentation detail, not a guarantee that every managed Chromebook or school configuration will work.
Internet access and files
An online REPL and package loading use web resources, so do not assume first-time setup or additional packages will work offline. The available documentation does not establish offline readiness for a particular hosted Pyodide REPL.

Browser code does not have unrestricted access to files on the Chromebook. Pyodide’s FAQ explains that browser security prevents JavaScript from directly loading arbitrary local data files through file:// URLs. If the REPL provides an upload or download workflow, use that for files it explicitly supports; do not expect Python code in a web page to browse the device’s filesystem freely.
Use Google Colab when hosted execution is acceptable
Colab lets users write and execute Python in a browser with no local setup, and its welcome page says created notebooks are stored in Google Drive. Its welcome page and developer overview describe preconfigured hosted runtimes. That makes it convenient for notebook lessons, but code runs remotely—not on the Chromebook—so choose it only if “no server” means no server you have to manage, rather than no hosted server at all.

Chromebook Linux can provide a local environment for commands and installed developer tools, but it requires enabling Linux and installing software—both outside the no-install path here. Google’s Chromebook Linux help warns: “If you use your Chromebook at work or school, you might not be able to use Linux.” A browser runtime avoids relying on Linux, though it still depends on the school allowing the relevant website.

If the browser option does not work
- The page will not open: the school may filter it or restrict the network. Ask your teacher whether the service is approved rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
- Sign-in or notebook access is blocked: school account policies may control access. Use only an account and service your school permits.
- A package import fails: check whether that package is supported by Pyodide and whether the REPL requires you to load it first. A standard desktop package is not automatically compatible.
- A local data file cannot be opened: use an explicit upload workflow if the chosen service provides one and the school allows it; browser pages do not get general filesystem access.
- WebAssembly or the REPL fails to start: try a current browser if school policy permits updates. Managed browser versions and settings can affect compatibility.
- You need a full local development environment: browser REPLs have limits. Ask the school about approved Linux access or another authorized environment instead of seeking administrator workarounds.
