Can You Use Passive Speakers with an Audio Interface?

Passive speakers can work with an audio interface through a suitable amplifier or receiver. Connect line outputs to line inputs, then amplifier speaker outputs to the speakers.

Yes—but you’ll usually need a separate stereo amplifier or receiver between the audio interface and the speakers. Connect the interface’s line outputs to the amplifier’s line inputs, then connect the amplifier’s speaker outputs to the passive speakers. Do not connect passive speakers directly to ordinary interface line outputs: they do not provide the power speakers need.

How to connect passive speakers to an audio interface

The typical stereo signal path is:

Computer or DAW → audio interface line outputs → amplifier or receiver line inputs → amplifier speaker outputs → passive speakers

  1. Connect the interface to the amplifier. Run the interface’s left output to the amplifier’s left line input and its right output to the right line input. Choose an interconnect that fits the actual connectors on both devices. Some interfaces have balanced ¼-inch TRS outputs, while many consumer hi-fi amplifiers use unbalanced RCA inputs; check both manuals before choosing a cable.
  2. Connect the amplifier to the speakers. Use speaker cable from the amplifier’s speaker outputs to the passive speakers, observing the terminals’ polarity and the equipment manuals’ instructions.
  3. Turn levels down before playback. Start with the interface and amplifier levels low, then raise them carefully. Confirm which controls affect the outputs you are using.

Why passive speakers need an amplifier

An interface’s line outputs send a signal intended for powered monitors or an amplifier input. Passive speakers need speaker-level power, which a power amplifier supplies. Focusrite’s guide to connecting passive speakers states: “Passive loudspeakers require a separate amplifier; the rear panel outputs should be connected to the amplifier’s inputs.”

Keep the signal directions straight: interface line outputs go to amplifier line inputs; amplifier speaker outputs go to passive speakers. Do not connect amplifier speaker outputs to the interface or another line-level input. Speaker-level output can damage equipment designed for the lower line or instrument signal.

Choose an amplifier that suits the speakers

Check the speakers’ nominal impedance and power specifications, then verify that the amplifier supports that impedance and provides an appropriate output capability. There is no universal wattage match that can be recommended without the models and their specifications.

Yamaha’s speaker setup guidance illustrates one pairing: an amplifier rated at 350 W into 8 ohms alongside an 8-ohm speaker rated for 350 W program power. That is an example from Yamaha, not a general rule for every system. Follow the specifications for your actual amplifier and speakers.

If you connect multiple speakers in parallel, their combined impedance differs from the impedance of each speaker alone. Check the resulting load and confirm the amplifier can support it before connecting them.

Using a receiver you already own

If your receiver already drives the passive speakers, connect the interface to an appropriate line input on the receiver, then select that input for listening. Do not assume every input is suitable: in particular, a phono input is intended for a different signal unless the receiver documentation says otherwise. Consult the receiver manual for the correct input and setup.

When powered monitors are the simpler option

Powered, or active, monitors contain their own amplification and can generally connect directly to an interface’s line outputs. Passive speakers instead require a separate amplifier. Powered monitors mean fewer components and connections; a separate amplifier can offer more flexibility in system planning. Which setup makes sense depends on the equipment you already have, the available inputs, monitoring controls, overall system cost, and compatibility between amplifier and speakers.

Check output volume controls on your interface

Do not assume every pair of interface outputs follows the main monitor knob. For example, Focusrite’s 4i4 4th Generation guide says outputs 3 and 4 are fixed-level; when used for monitoring, their level must be controlled in Focusrite Control or at the external amplifier. Check the guide for your exact interface before connecting an amplifier, and use the amplifier’s controls where appropriate.
