WebGPU supplies accelerated compute; it is not a model or a complete AI stack. Developers still need to deliver model files, manage their loading and storage, and decide what the app should do when WebGPU is unavailable.
What WebGPU does—and what it does not
“WebGPU is a web standard for accelerated graphics and compute,” as the Hugging Face Transformers.js documentation puts it. For browser-based AI, a runtime can use that interface to send supported computations to the system GPU.

WebGPU is only the acceleration layer. The application also needs a model runtime and compatible model files. Those pieces determine which models and tasks are supported, how they are loaded, and what happens on browsers without working WebGPU support.

- The app initializes a runtime. It loads the code that manages model inference and communicates with the browser’s compute APIs.
- Model assets become available. The browser downloads the required files unless the application has already provisioned them locally. Depending on the runtime and deployment, custom models may require conversion or additional artifacts.
- The runtime prepares the model. It allocates device resources and prepares the model for inference. This can take time and can be constrained by device memory and other available resources.
- The app sends input to the model. If computation is performed on the user’s device, inference is local. The application can then display generated output, for example as a stream of text.
The first load can take substantial time because the model must be fetched and initialized. Later loads may benefit from browser caching, but cache behavior and persistence vary; test the exact browsers and storage conditions your users will encounter.

Choosing between WebLLM and Transformers.js
Neither runtime is a universal winner. WebLLM is focused on browser-based LLM inference; Transformers.js offers a wider range of machine-learning tasks and execution paths.
| Decision point | WebLLM | Transformers.js |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Purpose-built for in-browser LLM inference accelerated with WebGPU. | Browser machine learning across language, vision, audio, and other supported tasks. |
| Execution path | WebGPU-based inference. | Uses ONNX Runtime; browser CPU inference through WASM is the default, with WebGPU selectable for supported configurations. |
| Model compatibility | Built-in registry covers a subset of MLC-supported models. Custom models require the MLC-format deployment workflow. | Depends on supported architectures and ONNX/model conversion. Confirm that the particular model and task work in the intended runtime. |
| Notable features | Project documentation describes streaming, JSON mode, and an OpenAI-compatible API. | Provides a broader pipeline-style API and quantized data-type options; choices vary by model. |
| Loading and storage | Model content must be made available; documentation describes browser caching options. | Model assets must also be delivered. The exact cache behavior depends on the application and browser. |
For a straightforward LLM feature built around a model in WebLLM’s registry, WebLLM is the more directly targeted starting point. For an application that combines language with vision or audio, or needs a WASM CPU path as well as an optional WebGPU path, Transformers.js may align better. These are fit considerations, not performance rankings: the cited project documentation does not establish a universal benchmark or quality winner.

Starting with WebLLM
The documented setup installs @mlc-ai/web-llm, creates an engine with CreateMLCEngine, and loads a selected built-in model. The model must be available to the browser, so account for its download and initialization in the user experience. WebLLM documents browser cache options, but the app should be tested in the target browser rather than assuming a cached model will always persist.
For a custom model using the MLC deployment path, the deployment guide identifies two required artifacts: weights converted to MLC format and a model library containing inference logic. Check the current supported-model information before choosing a model or committing to this workflow.

Starting with Transformers.js
Transformers.js uses ONNX Runtime. In a browser, it uses WASM for CPU inference by default; a pipeline can request WebGPU with device: "webgpu" when the selected model and browser support that path. The project also documents quantized data types intended for constrained environments, but the available options depend on the model.
This flexibility comes with a compatibility check: confirm the model architecture, conversion, task, and chosen execution path together. A model working in one configuration does not establish that it will work with every browser or device.

Browser support and device limits
WebGPU availability is not uniform. The Hugging Face guide reported around 85% global support as of March 2026, citing caniuse.com, and cautioned that some users would not be able to use the API. Treat that as a dated estimate, not a guarantee for your audience. The guide also notes version-dependent Safari support, Firefox feature-flag caveats, older Chromium flag caveats, and experimental behavior, especially outside Chromium. Check current compatibility for the browsers your application targets.
There is no universal minimum GPU, RAM, or storage specification established for browser LLMs. A device may expose WebGPU and still be a poor fit for a particular model or workload. Model size, quantization, runtime support, available device resources, and the task itself all affect whether a configuration is practical.

- Test the actual model and runtime on representative target devices, not just a browser’s reported API support.
- Measure first-load time and verify how model assets behave with the browser’s cache and storage limits.
- Provide a useful alternative for unsupported or unsuitable configurations, such as a server endpoint or a lighter WASM-compatible model or task where appropriate.
- Give users clear loading and fallback states instead of leaving them with a stalled interface if initialization fails.
Quantization, model size, and user experience
Smaller or quantized model files can make a deployment more practical in constrained environments, but quantization options vary by model and do not by themselves guarantee acceptable quality, speed, or compatibility. Choose based on the task: a short classification or extraction feature may have different requirements from open-ended generation.
Plan for the full asset lifecycle, not only the inference call. Model downloads affect network use and startup time; caching can help repeat visits but should be validated in the browsers you support. If the model does not fit the intended audience’s devices or the initial download is too costly, a smaller model, an alternate execution path, or server-side inference may be a better design.
Local inference is not the same as an offline or private app
“Local inference” means the model computation happens on the user’s device. It does not mean the whole application makes no network requests or that user data necessarily stays on the device.

Unless the model and runtime are pre-provisioned, the browser needs network access to download them. The application may also contact remote APIs or send telemetry. Inspect the deployed app’s network behavior before making privacy or offline claims, and explain separately which assets or services require a connection and whether prompts or results leave the device.
Quick Recap
A practical implementation decision
- Choose the task and model first. Check the runtime’s current model support and any required conversion or deployment artifacts.
- Select the execution path. Use WebLLM when its LLM-focused workflow and supported model fit; consider Transformers.js when its broader task coverage or WASM option matters.
- Set a browser support policy. Test current WebGPU availability and the specific runtime-model combination across the browsers and devices your audience uses.
- Design loading and fallback behavior. Account for model downloads, initialization delay, caching, storage, and a server or lighter-model alternative if needed.
- Verify network and privacy claims. Audit model delivery, remote calls, and telemetry before describing the feature as private or offline.
