1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose an RTX laptop if your project depends on NVIDIA CUDA, CUDA-specific libraries, or kernels. Choose a MacBook Pro with M5 Max if your software supports Apple Silicon—particularly MLX—and a large shared-memory pool suits your local workloads. Neither platform is a universal speed winner: check your exact software stack and model requirements before choosing.
Start with the software your project needs
For local AI development, framework compatibility is usually the first deciding factor. A laptop’s GPU and memory matter only if your tools can use them.

Choose RTX for CUDA-dependent work
NVIDIA describes CUDA as the software platform that lets applications use GPU computing. Its ecosystem includes GPU libraries and development tools for Python and C++. If your project requires CUDA libraries, CUDA kernels, or NVIDIA-specific tooling, an RTX laptop is the direct fit. Confirm that every important dependency, extension, and serving tool supports the GPU and software versions you plan to use. (Source: NVIDIA Developer, “CUDA Platform for Accelerated Computing.”)

MLX is an Apple Silicon framework with CPU and GPU operations that use shared memory. Its project documentation includes examples for transformer training, LLaMA generation, and LoRA fine-tuning. That makes MLX a genuine local-development option, not a guarantee that CUDA-first packages will work on a Mac. Check whether your specific application supports MLX or another Mac backend. Understand what the memory numbers mean
The top configurations in the current specifications are not directly comparable by capacity alone. Apple lists M5 Max MacBook Pro configurations with up to 128GB of unified memory. NVIDIA lists the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU with 24GB of dedicated GDDR7 memory. Unified memory is shared between the Mac’s CPU and GPU; the NVIDIA figure is GPU memory. They are different architectures, not equivalent pools with a simple one-to-one conversion.
Neither number guarantees that a particular model will run well—or run at all. The usable budget also depends on the operating system, runtime, model and quantization, context length, and other active work. Check the requirements of the model and software you intend to use rather than relying on a model-size cutoff based on nominal memory alone.

|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 Laptop GPU | 24GB GDDR7 | 95–150W |
| RTX 5080 Laptop GPU | 16GB GDDR7 | 80–150W |

| RTX 5060 Laptop GPU | 8GB GDDR7 | 45–100W |
| RTX 5050 Laptop GPU | 8GB GDDR7 | 35–100W |
These are NVIDIA’s listed ranges, not a promise that every laptop with the same GPU name has the same power limit or performance. Check the exact OEM model, cooling design, and GPU configuration. The RTX 5090 Laptop GPU also has 10,496 CUDA cores, according to NVIDIA; that specification alone does not establish how quickly it will run a particular workload.

MacBook Pro memory configurations
Apple lists M5 Pro MacBook Pro configurations up to 64GB unified memory and M5 Max configurations up to 128GB. Its specifications page lists up to 614GB/s memory bandwidth for the M5 Max configuration with a 40-core GPU, and storage options up to 8TB on some M5 Max models. Configuration eligibility varies by screen size and base SKU, so those maximums do not mean every starting configuration can be ordered with every tier. Select memory and storage at purchase; MacBook Pro memory is not user-upgradeable afterward.
Compare the platforms on the factors that affect your decision

What performance claims can—and cannot—tell you
Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement reports up to 4× faster LLM prompt processing on M5 Pro and M5 Max versus M4 Pro and M4 Max, and up to 8× faster AI image generation versus M1 Pro and M1 Max. These are Apple-reported, generational comparisons with test notes and selected configurations; they are not results against an RTX laptop. They should not be treated as independent cross-platform benchmarks.

A fair laptop-to-laptop comparison would need the same model, quantization, context length, batch, framework, and power and thermal conditions. The cited sources do not establish that comparison, so they do not support a categorical verdict that one platform is faster for local AI.
Make the choice for your actual workflow
- List required packages and backends. Identify any CUDA-only libraries, kernels, extensions, or serving tools. If the project requires them, prioritize an RTX laptop; if it supports MLX or another Mac backend, a MacBook can be viable.
- Check the workload’s memory needs. Look up requirements for your intended model, quantization, and context length. Include room for the operating system, runtime, and other processes, and distinguish dedicated VRAM from unified memory.
- Compare exact configurations. For RTX, check the OEM laptop’s GPU power limit, cooling, memory, and full system configuration. For a MacBook Pro, verify the selected chip, memory tier, screen size, and storage option before ordering.
- Price complete machines where you will buy. Compare total configuration price, SSD capacity, display and weight needs, power profile, and warranty in your region. GPU names and maximum memory capacities are not complete purchase specifications.
Bottom line
CUDA requirements point to RTX; an Apple-compatible stack and a useful shared-memory configuration can point to MacBook Pro with M5 Max. Decide from software compatibility and the exact workload first, then compare the specific laptop configurations. The published figures cited here do not establish a universal speed winner.
