NVIDIA lists 1,000W required system power for a configuration with a Ryzen 9 9950X, while its Founders Edition setup illustration separately shows an 850W minimum and warns that some systems may need more. Check the exact graphics-card model, PSU, cable route, and case dimensions before buying.
How many watts does an RTX 5090 power supply need?
NVIDIA specifies 575W total graphics power for the RTX 5090. Its specification table lists 1,000W required system power, based on a PC configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X, and recommends a PCIe CEM 5.1-compliant PSU. That figure is a system recommendation tied to a stated CPU configuration, not a claim that the card itself draws 1,000W. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 specifications and setup guidance

The same NVIDIA page’s Founders Edition setup illustration says “850W Minimum” and notes that a higher rating may be required depending on system configuration. These are two separate pieces of guidance: the specification table gives 1,000W for a Ryzen 9 9950X-based PC, while the illustration gives an 850W minimum for the Founders Edition setup and tells users to check with their PSU vendor. Do not treat the illustration as a guarantee that 850W will suit every RTX 5090 build.

MSI recommends 1,000W or more for standard RTX 5090 gaming configurations, and 1,300W–1,600W for systems with high-end CPUs or overclocking. FSP’s recommendation table, dated August 7, 2024, spans 1,000W to 1,650W depending on CPU class. Use these as configuration-specific manufacturer recommendations, not universal minimums. Estimate for your complete build
Start with the recommendation for your exact graphics-card model, then account for the CPU and the rest of the system. A more power-hungry CPU, overclocking, cooling choices, and other components can change the appropriate PSU capacity; MSI identifies these factors in its guidance. If your configuration falls outside a manufacturer’s stated example or recommendation, ask the PSU vendor to confirm a suitable rating.
- Check the GPU maker’s recommendation: board-partner RTX 5090 models may differ, so use the recommendation for the exact card you plan to buy.
- Check the CPU and build: compare your system with the CPU class and configuration covered by the PSU or GPU manufacturer’s guidance.
- Choose capacity for the whole system: do not size the PSU using the 575W graphics-card figure alone.
Which RTX 5090 power cable do you need?
The connector and cable route depend on the exact RTX 5090 and PSU. NVIDIA’s specification table lists either a 600W PCIe Gen 5 cable or four PCIe 8-pin cables connected through the in-box adapter. Its Founders Edition setup instructions describe the adapter using three PCIe 8-pin PSU cables and say the card supports three or four; they also list a PCIe Gen 5 cable rated at 450W or greater. Because NVIDIA’s wording differs by section and partner cards can differ, follow the instructions supplied with your exact GPU and confirm the cable arrangement with the PSU vendor.

- 【Compatibility】Designed specifically for RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 graphics cards, and fully compatible with ATX 3.0/3.1 power supplies.
- 【650W & PCIe 5.0】Complies with PCIe 5.0 standards, featuring 16AWG thickened alloy copper cores. This design delivers greater current capacity and lower voltage drop, ensuring stable operation without frame drops.
- 【Premium 16AWG Material】The internal core conductor boasts ultra-low resistance, so it won’t overheat during long hours of full-load operation. The thickened wire enhances heat dissipation and current transmission efficiency, meeting the strict stability requirements of professional gamers
- 【Fixed Length】Exclusively 15.75 in (40cm) long, this cable fits perfectly in both compact ITX cases and full-tower setups. Its split wire design allows for easy cable management.
- 【Injection-Molded Reinforcement】The connector and wire root are integrated via secondary injection molding, effectively preventing loose connections, overheating, and bending damage.
Native 12V-2×6 cable or the included adapter
For new RTX 50 Series builds, MSI recommends considering an ATX 3.1 / PCIe 5.1 PSU. Where the specific PSU and graphics card support it, a compatible native 12V-2×6 connection can simplify wiring compared with using multiple conventional PCIe 8-pin cables. The standard label alone does not establish that a particular PSU cable works with a particular GPU: verify compatibility for both exact models and check what cables are included. Check cable compatibility before purchase
- Confirm that the PSU manufacturer explicitly lists the native cable as compatible with your exact PSU model.
- If relying on the in-box GPU adapter, verify the required number of 8-pin connections and cables in the GPU manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not interchange modular PSU cables from different units unless the PSU manufacturer explicitly confirms compatibility. A connector that fits is not proof that the cable is wired for that PSU.
Will an RTX 5090 fit in your case?
For the Founders Edition, NVIDIA’s setup guidance calls for a 304 mm × 137 mm × 61 mm card, occupying three slots, plus another 36 mm for the power cables. It says reserving the equivalent of another unused expansion slot around the card typically improves airflow. These figures apply to the reference/Founders Edition setup, not every partner model. NVIDIA’s Founders Edition dimensions and preparation guide
For a partner RTX 5090, use that manufacturer’s dimensions and clearance guidance. Check the case’s available GPU length and slot space, and account separately for the connector and cable bend/space needed beside the card. A card that fits by length alone may still leave too little room for its power cable or airflow.

Pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the exact card. Find its board-partner model name, recommended system power, connector requirements, and dimensions.
- Match PSU capacity to the build. Consider the CPU and other components, and compare your configuration with GPU- and PSU-vendor guidance.
- Confirm the cable route. Check whether the exact GPU supports a compatible native PSU cable or requires its included adapter, and verify required cable count.
- Verify PSU cable compatibility. Use only a cable the PSU manufacturer lists for that exact unit; do not substitute a cable from another modular PSU.
- Check physical fit. Compare the card’s dimensions and slot use with the case, then allow room for the power cable and airflow.
