At launch on January 30, 2025, NVIDIA priced the GeForce RTX 5080 at $999 and the RTX 5090 at $1,999. That makes the 5080 just under half the 5090’s announced starting price, but the comparison is about launch MSRP—not today’s retail market. Page 3 of HotHardware’s RTX 5080 Founders Edition review shows a more limited conclusion: the 5080 is materially ahead of the RTX 4080 in several named synthetic tests, while the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 remain faster in the cited results.
What “half the price” actually means
NVIDIA announced the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 for January 30, 2025 availability at $999 and $1,999, respectively. Dividing those launch figures puts the 5080 just below half the 5090’s starting price. They are dated launch prices, not verified current street prices, and board-partner cards can sell for different amounts.
| Card | Announced starting price (January 2025) | Memory | Total graphics power | NVIDIA stated system power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5080 | $999 | 16 GB GDDR7 | 360 W | 850 W |
| GeForce RTX 5090 | $1,999 | 32 GB GDDR7 | 575 W | 1,000 W |
The 5090 therefore costs about twice as much at launch while offering twice the listed memory capacity and substantially higher power requirements. Those are important trade-offs alongside benchmark speed.
What Page 3 tested
HotHardware’s page reports UL 3DMark graphics tests and VR benchmarks run on the review’s test systems with default settings. These are controlled workloads, not an average across every game. CPU choice, resolution, graphics settings, drivers, ray tracing, and whether DLSS or frame generation is enabled can all change the gap between cards.

3DMark Speed Way
The RTX 5080 Founders Edition outpaced the RTX 4080 by approximately 20% in 3DMark Speed Way. The RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 were ahead of the 5080 in the cited results.
3DMark Steel Nomad
In 3DMark Steel Nomad, HotHardware reported an RTX 5080 advantage of about 19% over the RTX 4080. Again, the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 finished in front of it.

UNIGINE Superposition VR Future
The 5080 landed in the middle of the tested group in UNIGINE Superposition’s VR Future benchmark. That placement is a reminder that a newer card’s lead over one predecessor does not guarantee class-leading performance in every workload.
UL VRMark Blue Room
In UL VRMark Blue Room, the RTX 5080 beat the RTX 4080 by approximately 13% and finished behind the RTX 4090. This is a VR-specific result, not a forecast for every headset, title, or refresh-rate target.

How to read those percentages
- They are benchmark-specific: 20%, 19%, and 13% describe the named tests, not a universal gaming uplift.
- They are relative results: the reported comparisons are against the RTX 4080 under HotHardware’s stated test setup.
- They do not establish current value: launch MSRP comparisons cannot tell you which card is the better buy at today’s prices.
- They do not replace game testing: native rendering, ray tracing, DLSS, frame generation, resolution, and CPU limits can materially alter real-world results.
RTX 5080 versus RTX 5090 beyond price
| Comparison point | RTX 5080 reference specifications | RTX 5090 reference specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Launch starting price | $999, NVIDIA announcement for January 30, 2025 | $1,999, NVIDIA announcement for January 30, 2025 |
| VRAM | 16 GB GDDR7 | 32 GB GDDR7 |
| Total graphics power | 360 W | 575 W |
| Required system power | 850 W | 1,000 W |
| Benchmark position on Page 3 | Ahead of RTX 4080 in cited tests; behind RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 where reported | Ahead of RTX 5080 in the cited 3DMark comparisons |
For workloads that need more than 16 GB of graphics memory, the 5090’s 32 GB capacity can matter independently of frame-rate results. Conversely, the 5080’s lower power target can simplify a build and reduce the required PSU capacity.
Power, connectors, and case fit
NVIDIA’s reference RTX 5080 specification lists a 304 mm length, 137 mm width, two-slot thickness, and an 850 W required system power recommendation. The reference card can use three PCIe 8-pin cables through the included adapter or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for at least 450 W.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Quad-fan design boosts air flow and pressure by up to 20%. Compatibility: 357mm (14.1") length, 3.8 slots, 6.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Patented vapor chamber with milled heatspreader for lower GPU temperatures OC mode: 2790 MHz/ Default mode: 2760 MHz (Boost Clock)
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad ensures optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 3.8-slot design: massive heatsink and fin array optimized for airflow from the four Axial-tech fans
- Verify the exact board-partner card’s length, thickness, connector arrangement, and power limit.
- Confirm that the case has enough clearance for the card and for a safe bend radius around the power connector.
- Use a power supply that meets the manufacturer’s recommendation; an 850 W figure applies to NVIDIA’s reference guidance, not automatically to every factory-overclocked model.
- For an RTX 5090-class build, account for NVIDIA’s 1,000 W system-power guidance and its 575 W total graphics power.
Who should draw what conclusion?
If you are upgrading from an RTX 4080
Page 3 provides evidence of a meaningful uplift in the listed synthetic and VR tests—roughly 19–20% in the two 3DMark runs and about 13% in VRMark Blue Room. Check game-specific reviews before assuming those percentages will appear in your library.
If you are choosing between the 5080 and 5090
The 5080 offers the lower launch price and lower power demand, while the 5090 leads the cited benchmarks and doubles the reference memory capacity. The sensible choice depends on your resolution, workload, memory needs, power supply, and the actual prices available when you buy.

If you are building a compact or power-constrained system
Start with the individual card’s dimensions and connector requirements rather than the GPU name alone. Add-in-card specifications vary, so NVIDIA’s reference measurements are a baseline, not a guarantee for every RTX 5080 model.
Bottom line from Page 3
The RTX 5080 was priced at just under half the RTX 5090’s launch MSRP, and HotHardware measured it ahead of the RTX 4080 in the specific 3DMark and VR tests on this review page. The same results place the RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 ahead in the cited comparisons. Treat the percentages as workload evidence—not an all-games ranking—and weigh them against the 5080’s 16 GB memory and 360 W/850 W reference power guidance versus the 5090’s 32 GB and 575 W/1,000 W requirements.
